Weekly Progress Report

turtle power! — Fri, 11/21/2008 - 15:32

This week we have encountered a few problems. The largest problem we've encountered was that whenever we have an error on the server, it will not tell us what the error is, or what line the error has been detected. This has really slowed down the developmental progress, but we have been doing the best we can to write accurate code that will work.

Today in class we talked about changing servers and using the server I have set up and running in my apartment and after confirming with you, have transferred everything to my server. We have successfully been able to set up the database on my server and have been able to get the other features working.

We have been able to input information, edit information and delete information from the database without any problems. So far, we have the main page displaying copy that is entered into an HTML-based text editor, the FCKeditor. This editor takes input and converts it to an HTML string, which is then stored into the database. From there, whenever the string is called from the database, it will render the HTML accordingly. The advantage to using the FCKeditor is that it will enable the user to format the text (make it bold, italic, etc) and to add other text-entry features such as bullet and numbered lists and inserting hyperlinks.

What we hope to accomplish at the beginning of next week is to have the frontend coders get a template created so we can begin to put our code in and figure out exactly where each element needs to be, in order to keep the entire portal section aesthetically appealing. This does require the frontend coders to have a template completed that meets all W3 standard compliance requirements and if not, then we will have to go and correct the template to make sure it will render appropriately on different machines, running different browsers. This isn't the most time-crucial aspect, however meeting the W3 standards is imperative in creating an efficient website.
