Advocacy Initiative

Students working in groups will produce campaigns intended to foster a specific, beneficial change. Campaigns will last throughout the semester. Most weeks student groups will engage challenges intended to expand their campaigns. Groups' responses to these challenges will be shared with the class and evaluated by the instructor. Groups are expected to maintain and grow their campaigns during the semester. At the end of the semester, groups will deliver presentations that highlight the progress they have made. The class will vote on the campaigns' productivity, and group extra credit will be assigned based on voting results.

To form groups, each student will deliver a one-minute proposal to the class outlining a prospective advocacy initiative. Based on these proposals, the class will vote on five topics to pursue. Students whose pitches are selected will receive individual extra credit. The class will then form into groups based on the chosen topics.

The most effective topics for this project are ones that are feasible; they focus narrowly and target goals that are manageable in the given timeframe. Topic choice is open save for anything that contravenes the UNCW Code of Student Life (including the Seahawk Respect Compact) or induces violation of any municipal, state, or federal laws.

Presentation

Each group will deliver a brief presentation of no more than five minutes demonstrating what it achieved during the semester. The work groups do for Advocacy Initiative Challenge 8 will help them prepare for this presentation. Presenters will have access to the instructor station and are encouraged to use the projector to showcase successes. Groups may select one or more representatives to deliver the presentation; all group members need not participate.

The presentation's goal is to demonstrate why the group deserves extra credit points. After the presentations have completed, the class will vote to rank the groups' demonstrated achievements. The instructor also will rank the groups. Final point allotments will be based on a combination of the two evaluations.
