I think the description of strategies is strong. It does connect specific imagery with a particular mood that it is trying to create for the audience: "[the cover] will emphasize the fact that these songs were chosen by college students because they were either inspirational or influential in their lives."
I think one way this plan could be improved is to move the discussion of the poster to the other design plan. We are making two design plans for this project: one for the CD package and one for the promotional material. This discussion should go with its own design plan.
The purpose of this mix CD is to persuade college students that exercise regularly that listening to this mix CD can help them feel more motivated and energetic during a workout routine. The students should not think that this CD is only a money-grubbing project so that they don’t buy the CD, instead, they should see that the CD can help them get more out of a workout by pushing them to do their best, as well as make the workout more enjoyable.
To achieve this goal, the CD needs to be appealing to college students. The CD must look interesting, and contain good uplifting music that will get the heart pumping. The CD cover label will be bright and colorful to make the CD look lively and energetic. It will also feature one or two images of people or animals engaged in physical activity. This will help make it clear what type of purpose the CD has, as well as what type of music it will contain. The music will be interesting since it will come from various musical artists who practice and perform different styles of music. Despite the different sources, all of the music will be somewhat fast-paced to encourage physical activity.
The CD will contain 5 songs (the 3 tracks performed by Caspian are being treated as one) making for a total of about 30 minutes of play time, the length of an average college student’s short daily workout routine. The tracks on the CD are arranged to mimic the timeline of a physical workout. The CD begins with Quovis by Caspian, to correspond to the slower-paced beginning warm-up of a workout, and then picks up the pace with Further Up and Further In as the workout gets underway. The fast pace continues with The First Single (Cause a Scene) by The Format, and Sin by Nine Inch Nails. The CD begins winding down with What’s It Feel Like to Be a Ghost by Taking Back Sunday, and comes to a victorious finish with Number One by Hazel Fernandes.
This CD will add to any form of exercise, providing at its best, an encouraging musical motivation to keep the pace up during a workout, and at its worst, a pleasant sound that will counteract bothersome background noises such as workout machines, other people, or traffic.
I like how you chose the songs to flow and then threw in a "victorious finish". You have a good idea and I know how important motivation is when you are working out. Music really does help. I like the idea of a workout CD that isn't money grubbing and is up to date.
This has a great sense of purpose. The warm-up is a good thing to go with followed by the fast pace music to keep the exercise moving. The ideas of including pictures and bright colors is good and eye catching.
Design Plan Draft-Project 2
Sense of Purpose- To develop a CD packaging design that will appeal to the audience and create the desired emotion(s) affiliated with the types of songs and overall CD mood. The sense of purpose will be achieved by using images and colors to generate feelings associated with the desired scheme.
Audience- The audience will be composed of mainly Purdue students with an interest of various genres of music. Age ranges from 18-23.
Context- The desired mood I want the audience to have will be mellow. The songs I use will be of slower tempo and be useful for studying. The majority of the songs will be slower and avoid the faster/louder music styles.
Strategies- To convey the desired mood of the CD, I will use softer colors or maybe black and white photos. The text will not be overbearing and will display the title, songs, and other information in a visually pleasing manner.
Medium- The medium will include a CD cover, insert booklet, backliner (behind CD), and back of CD case. Each will have an individual design but maintain unity in design throughout the final product.
Arrangement- The arrangement of the content (CD title, song titles, other info) will help determine the style of music on the CD. The format of elements will be organized and appeal to the eye of the audience.
I think you have a very well stated context. The desired mood flows well with a studying theme. However, I think you need to have a stronger description of arrangement. At present, it sounds very vague and imprecise. What method will you use to order the tracks? What will be the arrangement of the title, track titles, and 'other info'?
This CD compilation features several music tracks from a variety of genres and time periods. At first, what might seem like a random smorgasbord of completely unrelated music, is actually an accurate reflection of the type of music that is popular today among youths in their late teens and early twenties. While there may be several music compilations that target the college or teen audience, this CD is aimed at their parents. The purpose of this compilation is to introduce parents to the world in which their children live and the current popular trends in music.
The target audience consists of adults in their mid to late forties and early fifties who feel disconnected from pop culture. Most of these adults are seeking to obtain some connection with their children. A secondary audience is made up of adults having a mid-life crisis and in need of knowing what is currently hip to listen to in their newly purchased convertibles.
The CD is packaged in the traditional plastic case. The outside label uses high-contrast, easy to read, medium size font since many in the target audience have less than perfect vision. The label consists of the title and several inspirational phrases like “Find out what is cool”, “Wonder what everyone is listening to on their iPod?”, “Be young and hip again”, and “Hear what’s popular in college”, the purpose of which would be to subliminally make the audience feel “out of the loop” – like they need to buy this CD. Furthermore, pop icons such as an iPod, as well as pictures of young men and women are dispersed throughout the outside and inside covers. The CD uses bright, exciting colors in order to capture the attention of the adults. The mix of bright orange and sky blue also generate feelings of excitement, youth, and vivacity.
The purpose of this CD case is to entice college students to buy and listen to the mix CD and use it on a road trip. This mix CD will be compiled of the following songs listed below:
“Happy Alone” Kings of Leon
“The First Single (Cause a Scene)” The Format
“Photograph” Nickelback
“What’s it feel like to be a Ghost?” Taking back Sunday
“Goodbye” Army of Anyone
This CD will provide upbeat music that can be listened to by many college students on their road trips during or after spring break. Since college students will be expected to buy this package, the cost of the package will be greatly reduced by creating just a cardboard slip that holds the CD instead of a full jewel case. The CD will be created by burning these five songs to the CD so that it can be played in the car on the road trip.
The main attraction of the case will have something to do with the open road and friends in the rear-view mirror.
The audience is well established as with the strategy. Very interesting idea. The arrangement is not clear in the plan, how will you make the cover attractive and what will be involved with the cover, the back, and the CD itself what kind of designs are you thinking of doing. Something with a car would be wise.
I like this design plan. You have stated very clearly your intent to produce a cheap mix CD. You have made very good choices by making the CD cover simple and cheap. I also think that the rear-view mirror is a good idea. the roafd trip CD niche is as good a sub-genre as any to focus on. good job!!
I really like the idea and theme of your CD. I think you may want to go into more detail though on what kind of images and text you are planning on using on your front cover and on the CD itself. With some creativity in that area, I think your CD packaging could work out really well!
1. Audience: I think you have a good audience section. You take into consideration what college students will want to listen to during Spring Break. You also take into account that because of who your audience is, they may not have a lot of money to spend on an expensive CD.
2. Context: It might be a good idea to consider where this CD would be sold. If you have a CD in a cardboard slip that is being sold next to jewel cases, will people buy it just because it is cheaper? I know that as a student, I want cheap products that don’t look cheap. Also will a burned CD be the best quality? (I know this is what we are doing for class purposes but it may not be the best way to go for a 'real' CD.)
For my CD's packaging and promotional material, I plan to target people interested in rock music and make them interested in purchasing and listening to the CD. The target audience will be younger, from around high school aged to college aged people, as they are more likely to experiment with new music and enjoy rock music. The prospective buyer will probably be at a record store looking at hundreds of CDS, so hopefully mine will stick out (in a good way).
One thing that is important is the selection of songs that will go on the CD. While the CD will promote non-mainstream music, there should also be some songs that the browser recognizes. By having these, hopefully some buyers will be more enticed to buy it as they recognize some of the songs, and may think that the other songs could be interesting.
The idea behind the CD packaging will be something along the lines of “a day of rock”, with the music perhaps being fit for waking up, going to school or work, lunch/afternoon activities, after dinner activities (hanging out with friends or going out in the city), and ending the day before bed. In the insert, each one of these activities will have a page of their own with a picture of what the activity (or setting) would be like, and what song is accompanying it. Following this theme, the front cover of the CD will be either be the wake up picture or a pre-dawn picture, with the back cover being a picture of nighttime. This packaging will hopefully get people interested if they see the cover and want to know what music is accompanying each picture.
The promotional material will be 5 posters, each with a fuller picture of the possible activities, with accompanying information about the album. There should be something more in the posters that add to the picture so that even people that already have the album will be interested in the posters, and have something to talk about to others.
You covered your audience fairly well. Maybe include a picture of what person would likely to listen to the cd (ex: person who likes rock/punk/country/etc. music). You have a good idea of how things will already be arranged and I think the arrangement you listed is great. One thing you might want to add so that you can complete your arrangement point is to include the songs you will have on the cd. And also tell what songs will be used for the morning/going to school/lunch and afternoon/etc. Otherwise great job !
I really like your idea of multiple posters to go along with the cd, but it seems that you could go more in depth with your arrangement.
very original idea for this CD. Mentioning 5 posters for promotional material is a good idea and it sounds like that you are basing your poster off of the idea that some people will have heard of your product but will still be interested in the posters.
You should be careful that you really work to convey this message of a song for different parts of the day. Even saying 'a song for every part of the day' might even work. I think people could very easily miss the concept of this CD if it is not spelled out for them.
For project two I plan on creating a CD containing music from bands that would appear at a summer concert called the Vans Warped Tour. The Warped Tour offers a wide variety of punk, punk rock, alternative, emo, screamo and metal music. The CD would contain the songs, “Playing with Fire” by Emery. “ Good-bye” by Army of Anyone. “What it feels like to be a Ghost” by Taking Back Sunday. “The First Single” by the Format. And finally, “Happy Alone” by Kings of Leon. I will target this CD to teenagers and young adults, on account of they make up the highest percentage of fans that attend the Vans Warped Tour. The CD will contain a lot of black and a dirty, almost grungy theme. There will be many frayed edges designed into the CD. I want this CD to contain a feel similar to what one would feel in at a concert. As far as graphics, the graphics on this CD will images one would see on their way to a concert. The booklet will open up to reveal an empty line that leads to a concert hall which will be drawn behind where the CD sits. Another idea I have for the CD is to list the tracks on the back page on a ticket stub.
The main goal of this CD is to get people pumped up and excited for concerts. Because I assume that the Vans Warped Tour is copywritted I will not be including any logos or the name of the concert anywhere on the CD.
Your audience is planned out really well, due to the fact that the warped tour is pretty much a teenagers paradise. As for Medium, i wasn't quite getting the full feel of how it will look. Maybe you could go more in depth.
The strategies for this design plan are well-planned, and it is obvious that you have spent a great deal of time thinking about your target audience. All the references that you make to various elements to a concert are sure to attract the concert-going people for which you are aiming. One thing you might want to think about some more is context. If your CD design is going to be so dark, how are people going to notice it in a store? Since you won't be there to personally point out your CD it needs to be eye-catching in some way. Also, do you plan to have this CD be available year-round or at a certain time of the year, perhaps shortly before the Vans Warped Tour starts until shortly after it finishes.
For Project 2, I am going to create a CD with a “Through the Decades” theme. This will be based on the release date of the album that the chosen song is on. With five songs on the CD, the decades included will be the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, and 2000s, with of course one song for each period. After doing some research on the songs, I found a song for each decade. In order, beginning with the 1960s and concluding with our current decade, I chose “Octopus’s Garden” by The Beatles, “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd, “Sin” by Nine Inch Nails, “The Saga Begins” by Weird Al Yankovic, and “What’s It Feel Like to Be a Ghost?” by Taking Back Sunday. I feel like each one of these songs represents their respective time period well.
The sense of purpose of this CD is to attract a wide variety of people. Most likely, younger people, possibly college-aged students, would be attracted to this album. Older people would probably not be as interested due to the inclusion of the 1990s and 2000s. Through some of my friends’ musical preferences and even from the songs that our class posted, it can be seen that people enjoy music from several different time periods.
The front cover of the CD will have each decade (60s, 70s, etc.) displayed in large, easily readable font, as it is the focus of the album. I’m not sure what other specific images I would like to use (both on the cover and CD itself), but I think images that somehow portray a passing of time would obviously be appropriate. I want to make sure that these images are not dull and catch the eye of those looking at it. By containing a wide variety of music, the CD will attempt to target a large audience.
1. Arrangement: I think you covered the arrangement section well. It is obvious that you have an idea of what you want to accomplish but you left it open-ended enough that you can change it if you don’t find that it works well with the overall theme. You also take into account how the arrangement will affect your audience.
2. Context: I didn’t see your context section here. It might be a good idea to think about where your audience will see your CD package material. If they see it in the store will you want it to stand out and be different? How would you go about doing that? This section might also help you further develop your idea for the packaging material.
CD Package Design Plan
The purpose of the CD package is to target athletes and fans of sports ranging from teenagers to middle aged people. Since most athletes other than professional athletes are fans of sports the same design plan will work for the athletes as well. The CD package will consist of two parts, a CD and case inserts. The package itself needs to have a sports theme. This communication needs to be attracting to all sport fans and athletes.
To reach the audience that includes people in the United States who are sports fans as well as athletes in any sports. Choosing a CD for this project is common sense in that the featured items are songs and this is one of the easiest ways to put songs onto a medium. The CD will consist of a jewel case with two inserts and the CD will have a label itself. The front insert will feature a sports theme which will show that this CD is all about sports and songs that might deal with them. The back insert will show the tracks included and maybe a picture to suggest a win or lose in a game. The CD cover could be a picture of a ball such as a baseball or basketball.
All of the written material provided on the CD package will need to be easy to read and able to grab the audience’s attention. The pictures need to be very attracting without going too far over the top since the audience is a wide range. The components of the CD package needs to be clear and concise. Listed below will be what each component will contain:
• CD itself: Picture of a basketball with Title of the Album
• Front insert of case: A sports theme with an athlete interacting with the CD in some sports arena or environment.
• Back insert of case: Include a list of songs with and ending sports scene. Such as a score board with zero time left.
More than likely most of the audience will see the CD case in a store somewhere and so the front cover needs to be able to attract eyes to it. The songs themselves will be in an arrangement that would suggest a pre-game, during a game, and post game songs. Many possibilities can be used for this; it would depend on the audience to interpret the songs to be linked to sports.
I think this idea could work out really well, or it could fail. I think that if the cover ends up looking like a jock jams cd it could possibly fail. But if your design ends up being very appealing it could work out really well.
Make sure your images dont look tacky. If the images fit the music well, i think you will be just fine.
DESIGN PLAN
I have chosen the following songs:
• The Beatles, Octopus’s Garden
• Weird Al Yankovic, Yoda
• Weird Al Yankovic, The Saga Begins
• Popple, Binary
• Hall & Oates, Maneater
The resulting goal in the design of this CD package is to interest consumers into buying it. There are many CDs and many types of music out in the world, which means that this CD package must have some unique quality which sets it apart from the rest. To accomplish this task, I have chosen to market these songs as “Crazy, Absurd” songs. All of the songs listed have a very weird set of lyrics, almost absurd at times. In the worst case, the consumer has seen and is most likely intrigued by the cover, and will potentially think about the album for a while.
The audience will most likely be younger and in the 16-24 age group. They will most likely live an “Experiencer” lifestyle, and have disposable income. It is possible that they will be non-conformists who are looking for something different. The idea of something which is absurd might appeal on a comedy level, potentially opening up sales opportunities as gag gifts and party tunes. People who are also looking for something quite absurd or amazing, just for the “wow” effect might be interested in buying the CD as well. The consumer will most likely be in direct contact with the CD packaging at the time they view it. This will allow maximum exposure for impulse buying.
Because this CD package is being marketed at a younger age group, it is reasonable to assume that this age group is still unconfident about their image and they place in life. I will use this to my advantage by designing the package to induce thought into the consumer. I myself have experienced many advertising techniques related to thought induction and believe this is the most effective advertising model for such a young age group. Thus because this is a CD which tries to show absurdity and craziness, I will attempt to:
• Provide a cover which encourages the consumer to think about the situation presented. Perhaps a puzzle or piece of art.
• Leave much of what the consumer sees up to interpretation.
• Model the design in such a way that it seems absurd or unreal.
• Use a very high contrast of colors, with a dark background and bright image colors. It will make it seem less professional as people of this age-group are looking for non-conformity.
The package will contain a booklet which has lyrics, and will be black with white lettering to produce a high contrast (in an attempt to look cool). Stylizing will be used on titles to help them stand out. The logo will be displayed on the front cover & on the CD in the lower left (arbitrary) in order to have it stand apart from other items on the package.
It sounds like you know what audience you want to target and convince to buy your CD. I like the mention of "impulse buying," it sounds like something your target audience would do, but it is probably not a good idea to rely on only that aspect of your audience. It also looks like you have a pretty good idea of what you want to do as far as strategies and arrangement for designing the look of your CD, but it seems like you are not quite there yet. May I suggest using some surreal art or perhaps an optical illusion for the CD design. I doubt that a 3D picture would work, but what about one that uses silhouettes to show two pictures at once? For exmaple the vase vs two faces or the old woman vs a young woman. You might want to be careful though because with thought-provoking art like that you might end up targeting older or more philosophical or thoughtful people than the audience you are trying to target.
CD Design Plan
The purpose of this project is to design a CD Package that will be targeted towards a certain audience. Since the songs that we have to choose from for this CD have been submitted by college students, the obvious choice for a target audience will be college students. The medium of choice will be a traditional plastic case with a book insert.
You have mentioned that your audience is college students, but not all college students enjoy all the same types of music. Is there a way you could be more specific? Is this like a college party dance mix, a relaxing weekend mix, or maybe a mix to "pump you up" before a football game? Do you have any ideas of what your CD inserts will look like? Will it be plain and simple? Will it be busy and energetic? Will there be images to draw in attention? What about arrangement? Do you have any ideas of what songs you will use and the order you will put them in? Will the order have any significance? How do you want your listeners to feel durring and after they listen to your mix?
Your choice of audience is good. Maybe try to improve on your arrangment of songs in the cd. Say what the songs will be and how they will be arranged. Also, tell why the audience should buy this college mix cd rather than another mix.
Design Plan
The medium to be used for this project will be a compact disk holding music and a case with a front and back cover. Five songs will be selected from the class list with a common theme. I have chosen “What’s it Feel Like to be a Ghost” by Taking Back Sunday, “Maneater” by Hall & Oats, “What Goes Around Comes Around” by Justin Timberlake, “Yoda” by Weird Al Yankovic, and “Escaping Toronto” by Eisley. These types of songs are typically played on pop stations or in concerts, both of which tend to appeal to the younger crowd.
The purpose of the packaging is to make as many sales as possible by positioning the product toward a specific audience. The target audience will be experiencers and young strivers; young adults in general. The music chosen for the compilation will be given a title like “Dance Disk” to appeal to the strivers who want to fit in and to the experiencers who make up about 61% of people between the ages of 18 and 24.
The overall strategy of this media is to appeal to the high school and college-aged group of adults by using popular music and projecting an image of fun and dancing for those who listen to the mix. Colors on the box and disk will be bright and colorful with contrasting text to give an upbeat image to the product. The fonts will be easy to read but not too large, about 9 or 10-point sans-serif fonts for most of the package to give a modern feel to the compilation.
Testing will be done throughout the project. The cover designs will be tested with different colors, contrasts, titles, and fonts. Different people from different audience groups will check the cover drafts for appeal to ensure that the target audience is being reached.
Cool idea going for the angle on concerts. I like how you will test it as the project develops instead of at the end.
I feel this design plan does a good job in defining it's audience (with the % research) and gearing all parts of the CD and packaging towards reaching and selling to this audience. The music, arrangement, and overall strategy all have good reasons for their choices.
One area that could be elaborated on would be the arrangement itself. The plan references using bright colors and text, but it doesn't talk about if there will be any other pictures or what the text on the front/back will actually be. It may be possible they were planning on not having any pictures, but it might be a good idea to explicitly note this and give a reasoning
Project 2 Design Draft
Song List
1. The Beatles – Octopus’s Garden
2. Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here
3. Hall & Oates – Maneater
4. Nine Inch Nails – Sin
5. Army of Anyone – Goodbye
Scheme:
The way these songs are linked are by the years they were created. Each of these songs were made in a different decade:
-The Beatles – Octopus’s Garden : 60’s (1969)
- Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here : 70’s (1975)
- Hall & Oates – Maneater : 80’s (1982)
- Nine Inch Nails – Sin : 90’s (1990)
- Army of Anyone – Goodbye : Today (2006)
Five Decades of music on one CD, showing the evolution of music throughout the years. I want to go with a visual look that portrays a style from the 60’s that blends with a style of today.
Audience:
The audience should be anyone who enjoys a wide variety of music from different time periods, but mostly in the rock genre.
Extra:
I also want to create a poster that will represent and advertise the CD. The design will closely follow that of the CD itself, with a few more details.
That's a really clever idea for a mix CD! You have a nice idea for the arrangment and it shows how people will be able to identify the type of music you have, but you should add more about how will will appeal to their love of diverse music to draw them in to the album.
It's a neat way to link the songs. However, you need to expand on your audience: will they be old or young? This matters because it will determine the images you use, the font you use, colors, etc...
I want to create a CD package that helps listeners explore other types of music out there that they don’t know about or have never listened to. The listeners that the package will be designed toward are teenagers and college students who are interested in hearing the many types of music out there. The audience will have knowledge of some types of music but not all so small explanations will be needed so that the listeners can get quick information on each song if they know nothing about it. The CD package will convey the idea of variety in music and have a professional humoristic feel to show that the CD will deliver on what is showed on the CD package. Also, the CD package will need to stand out from other mix CDs so it will use appealing colors for the audience and use images.
The CD package will have an interesting look to it to get the audience to notice it and just enough information to make them want to know more. For that, the CD package will use images of icons that define the different types of music but also show how in all there is an artist feel no matter the type of music. For information, the text will be easy to read and in a legible font and decent size where doesn’t take up to much room.
The CD package will consist of a front jewel case cover, back jewel case cover, and CD cover. The program of choice for this CD package will be Macromedia Freehand.
The parts of the CD package that will be needed are Title which would be located on the front jewel case cover and List of songs on CD which would be located both on the front jewel case cover back side and back jewel case cover. The list of songs on the back side of the front jewel case cover will have more information on the song like music type and what CD is comes from while the information that will feature here and on the back jewel case cover will be song title and who the song is from.
The audience is easily understood as is the medium. You cleary state how what you are going for with a CD that is not usual to listeners and that it will consist of a variety of songs. The arrangement isn't really clear. You don't say how you are going to appeal to the target audience. You mention it needs to stand out and use appealing colors but how will you incorporate these things into the actual CD package..ie what will be on the cover and the back as well as the CD itself.
The strategy is a very good idea, most students enjoy listening to music while they study. The arrangement on the other hand needs to more clear and precise, you don't really mention how you are going to accomplish this with the CD package. What will you put on the cover, the back, as well as the CD itself, specifically?
The sense of purpose in this draft is really focused, and helps guide the rest of the plan. By knowing what they wish to achieve (give the feeling of mellowness) the rest of the areas know what they need to achieve and give good ideas for achieving it.
One thing that couuld be expanded on would be Arrangement. The plan mentions that the elements will be organized and will appeal to the audience, but it doesn't mention specifically how (of course, it is just a draft, they probably have something in mind).
The CD compilation covers music that will be driven towards the theme of study music. College students within our class, which will help target a specific audience, have selected the music. This campaign targets students through a familiar yet calming/relaxing theme, which will help cover a broad spectrum of tastes and cover people who like to study with music.
The CD cover will feature a theme that is calming which will reflect the song choices that are on the CD and that will have a recognizable look so that viewers will be able to understand what type of CD it is. The interior of the case will continue the same feel as the exterior.
The development of the CD would be primarily in campus music stores. The design will use various colors to create a felling that is calming, relaxing, but still interesting enough that someone is going to want to pick up the CD and buy it. The CD title will be easily read and appear on the front cover. The back of the CD cover will have a list of the track titles and song names.
You have decided to use the same theme on the cover as well as the inlay, which is fine, but you havent told us what that theme is! Since the song choices are not very well connected, what theme in particular do you intend to use?
Research has suggested that students who study with Mozart playing in the background have better results than those students who listen to rock music while studying. Since this is a study music compilation, are you making a mix tape of Mozart or rock music?
In general, I don't think you have enough details put forward in this plan. Put the song list, specific colors and designs that you are using.
I think that the plan has strategy, with the music coming from college students, the calming theme, the colors, and recognizable look. The audience is also seems well defined.
I think the plan could have had a more well defined sense of purpose. It seems that the plan mainly deals with strategy and arrangement inter-weaved with audience.
1. Strategy is covered well in this draft. It is effective since the person analyzed the audience and content on the CD and used that to decide how the package will look visually. The strategy is to give a calming feeling to reflect the song choices which is done by creating a CD package that uses the right colors to have a calm theme.
2. Arrangement is not covered to much in the design plan draft. Some more information on how the text will look and be located to create a calming feeling. Also, what are the main colors of the package and why they cause a calming feel would help.
Design Plan for CD Packaging and Promotional Materials
The CD packaging and promotional materials will need to interest a wide audience base whose mood at the time they are viewing the compositions could be very different from each other and therefore difficult to pinpoint. The audience who will probably find this CD most favorable will be in the age range of 18 to 30.
My strategies are to create two flyers; a regular 8 1/2 by 11, and a smaller pocket sized flyer. My goal is to create a regular flyer to catch people’s eye and the smaller flyer that they can take with them to remind them of the CD. This will also act as a prompt to buy the CD. The CD packaging will be the same as the flyer. This way if someone sees the flyer and then goes to look for the CD, they would remember the flyer and know that this is the right CD.
My main idea for the design is a party theme. The five songs that I think represent what could be played at a party scene are: “Sin,” “What Comes Around/Goes Around Interlude,” “What’s it feel like to be a ghost,” “Photograph” and “Devils Never Cry (Staff Roll).” The headline will be similar to a Part of the Century type of line or something like the best songs for the best party.
For the flyers I want to create a party feel. My outline of the design for the flyers and CD packaging is a dark background with people dancing. The people will have no discernible features and will be colored in with bright eye catching colors (2 or 3 used repeatedly). I want the text to stand out against the dark background and the colorful people. I want to try the text in white. But I’m not sure yet if that will look the way I envision it. I also want to incorporate music notes that have a party feel not a classical music feel to them.
As I mentioned above, the CD packaging will be very similar to the flyers. The front cover will look the exact same, using the same font style, font colors, background colors and images. The back cover will list the song titles and artists. It will also have the party continuing in the background.
Behind the CD will be an image representing the end of the party. I have a couple of ideas for this but I haven’t settled on one yet. My first idea is an empty drink cup lying on its side but even though I’m trying to portray a party feeling I don’t want it to look tacky. My other idea is to have the colorful people draped over furniture or lying on the floor, with maybe a few people still dancing.
For testing, I will test my designs in varying stages by having my friends look them over. I will ask my friends specific questions about how they feel when viewing the materials and if this is something they would want to buy if they saw it in the store. I will also do testing. I will look at the product from a distance to see if it is eye-catching or if it blends in with other flyers or CD packages.
My budget will consist of the cost of printing on campus, approximately four cents per paper. If it is feasible to have the deliverables printed professionally, I will do this. However I won’t know if this is feasible until later in the design process.
I would like to use InDesign to create my deliverables but I do not have the program on my computer at home. If the amount of time for the project is an amount feasible to working on it at a campus computer, I will use InDesign. If the project is very time consuming I will use Word.
It seems like you have really thought this through. Your strategies are very clear, and I think you did a good job of coming up with different ways to represent a "party atmosphere." I really have no suggestions as of right now. Hopefully this all works out for you!
The purpose of this design is to appeal to and persuade the target audience to buy a compilation album of their favorite songs.
It needs to be relative to the content of the album, yet ambiguous so as to allow potential customers to provide their own closure.
The target audience are young people from ages 18-25 who are struggling for their own personal identities. The design needs to be attractive and visually stimulating. Packaging should reflect this sort of inner conflict and be visually complex and new.
The album should be mainly dark.
Where color is used, it should be complimentary, such as shades of blue and orange.
Photoshop will be used as a medium for texturing and filtering effects.
I felt that you were very vague. "ages 18-25 who are struggling for their own personal identities", from personal experience that could have been just about anyone i have ever met. Do you intend to reach such a large number of people? Could you be more specific. Perhaps you are talking about college students, people who skipped college, or took a year off. Can you give me an idea of what your cover might include? You said it will be dark, but will there be any images on it? If so, of what?
sounds great so far! you have a good idea going and this purpose of design draft is looking good so far. i like how you described why you are using the colors you are and who exctly your target audience is.
The purpose of this CD is to help encourage the youth of society to stay active and exercise. Although it is intended for today’s youth, the main demographic being targeted is college students. By staying active, we hope to help these college students over come The Freshman Fifteen that many incoming college students experience. By promoting exercise we hope to encourage these students to find an exercise routine that suits them. This CD is filled with songs that are enjoyable and have a fast rhythm that encourages movement. Exercise also helps to alleviate stress which may be caused by classes, balancing school and a job, living on your own, or the entire transition itself.
In order to help this CD stand out it will have bright and bold lettering to draw in attention and a picture having to do with fitness and incorporate that in with student life. The back cover will be rather simple but not plain. The tracks will be listed with minimal text to not draw attention away from the graphic
This CD has a duration of twenty minutes which is about the time of a short work out or jog. Since this CD is meant to encourage incoming freshman to find a workout that will suit them, it’s a perfect length. If it were much longer the students might become overwhelmed and feel discouraged. Also, the student may find that their schedule will not allow an extended workout. This work out is designed to be quick and painless. It’s twenty minute length allows the student to fit it in between classes or any other time of the day.
We will start this CD off with “Further In” by Caspian because it starts off slow and quiet and picks up speed as it progresses, making it a good warm up song. It will be followed by “The First Single (Cause A Scene)” by The Format, “What's It Feel Like to Be a Ghost” by Taking Back Sunday, “Playing With Fire” by Emery, and ending with “Goodbye” by Army of Anyone.
I think the plan has a clearly and well defined audience. The audience is for youth and college students and presenting a CD with music which will encourage an active exercise life.
It seems that the sense of purpose and audience are very closely inter-weaved. I think the plan could have had a more separate and pronounced sense of purpose section. Other than that everything looks pretty good.
One thing I really like about this CD is that I feel like your choice of music really fits this audience well. While there is alot of music out there to pump people up I feel like most of this music would attract a younger audience and that alot of college students are very concerned with their health.
One suggestion I have is to make sure to get across a message that his CD will pump you up. It sounds like with the bright colors you plan on conveying an energetic message but intense fonts and graphics would help out this CD.
This has a good theme. It is geared toward exercising and good health. The audience is a bit limited to Freashman college students, maybe extending to a larger audience to reach more people.
Wow, this is very catchy and seems very well thought out, I'm ready to buy the mix! Maybe bright and bold lettering however would draw in a younger teen crowd. To give the album a more mature image (since it targeted to students making the transition to college) it could have more natural colors, like colors of a forest or sand and ocean as if somebody were to run on the beach. I'm suggesting this because fitness magazines seem to tie in fitness with nature since they both have a healthy image, and you could try to capitalize on that.
Very good. You did a good job with describing your purpose, strategies, arrangement, and audience. I think you could however talk about the medium a little more.
Design Plan Draft
The purpose of this design project is to create the artwork for a CD case. The CD will include several songs from the class web site. Each of the students in class brought in a song to have posted on the web site. The target audience is toward college students.
The CD case includes a booklet, which has a front cover, an inside front panel, a back cover, and an inside back panel. The artwork will show on these pages of the CD case and have a link between the songs that are on the compilation CD. In addition, a label for the CD itself will have a design.
The audience is college students because they appreciate having access to several good songs on the same CD. The target audience has a limited budget and likes to get as much as they can out of one particular thing and as quickly as possible, so the CD case design will have to be eye catching in bold colors.
i think that you have a good start going. it is clear who the target audience is. you may now want to add more in there about the actual CD cover it's seld along witht eh booklet and the type of cd it will be. also, you should include a little more about the look and feel of the cd and how that relates to your target audience.
Design Plan
College music compilation
Music is an important part of anyone’s life. Music defines culture, interests, moods, style, intelligence, diversity and experience. Because music is so diverse it requires a very specific marketing plan, the goal of this project is to make a CD and package design that will convey a message people believe is specific to themselves while making it still available to as large a consumer market as possible. Specifically college students and young adults will be targeted because of the music that has been provided and the expendable income they posses.
To help formulate a strategy the designer will draw on various readings as well as popular culture and personal experience. Many examples are available to study and analysis of the strategies used with popular products will lead to a successful marketing campaign.
The first portion of the campaign is the CD itself.
Given the various songs made available and their source the designer plans on grouping together the songs that have a significant meaning. Only a couple popular songs will be included and the bulk of the CD will be comprised of songs that are not played on the radio or TV. The reason for this is that today’s generation seeks individuality. By selecting songs that are not main-stream it gives the consumer a sense of personal identity. The popular songs will be placed to still provide a degree entertainment and for the consumer to feel connected to the rest of society. This plan is based on the strategy that the consumer is buying a lifestyle instead of a song.
Next the packaging of the CD will be what the public sees on the shelf.
The cover of the CD case will be a picture of a theatre behind the curtains. This picture will relate to the title of the compilation and will depict the meaning behind why these songs were chosen. It will emphasize the fact that these songs were chosen by college students because they are either inspirational or influential on their lives. The back of the CD will have a song list and a picture of some stage equipment. This will highlight the songs in the selection and how they relate to the students. The inside will have a booklet included with the lyrics to the songs and possibly quotes about them as well, from the students who chose them. This packaging is not only artistic and attractive but also ambiguous. It does not choose what genre of music is on the CD or specific ideals people want to stand by. It sells what these students used to form their lifestyle while leaving room for interpretation for the consumer.
Lastly a poster or other commercial media will be designed to advertise the CD.
The advertising media will follow the same strategy that the CD packaging does. It will attempt to be ambiguous while still selling a lifestyle that the consumer wants to have. A possible design idea involves a student walking through various atmospheres in different social situations and choosing a specific song on an mp3 player. The song will be from the tracks available on the CD. The student never talks so that people understand he or she is “thinking”. It will show the student assess the situation and then make a selection on his or her mp3 player after which they will casually walk to the next scene.
