Please respond to this blog post by clicking the "add new comment" link below.

  1. Provide a few sentences of introduction about yourself. Who are you? What are your interests?
  2. Provide a few sentences about your expectations for this class. Is it so far what you expected it to be? What do you expect to get out of it? What caused you to enroll in this class rather than say a business writing class?
  3. Since I'm asking about you, ask one question about me. Questions can be about the course or me personally (although I could refuse to answer something all too shocking).

1. My name is Brian Smith, I'm a sophomore in CGT here at Purdue. I'm from Dearborn Michigan, right outside of Detroit. I like music, drawing, and cartoons. I'm a big fan of the Simpsons and Family Guy.
2. So far this class seems alot more hands on than I expected it to be. By the end of this class I expect to be able to learn to write everything I need to concisely and appropriately by the end of this class, my writing tends to ramble. I'm majoring in computer graphics so this class seemed like it would benefit me more then say a business writing class and it definately seemed more interesting.
3. In your opinion what is the hardest form of media to write for? (web-sites, pamphlets, flyers, etc)

Hi
slmcnutt | Tue, 2007-01-09 17:08

I'm a computer science student graduating (hopefully) in May. I'm interested in computers & soccer.

I expected to be making websites & studying different ways of communication via online mediums in this class, and so far that looks like what it's about. I've already taken 421, and this class seems more related to CS than 420, so that's why I'm taking it.

My question: Your website seems to be very Web 2.0-ish in design. Do you follow this standard because of practicality, of culture, or personal choice?

My name is Aaron Georges. I'm in my 10th semester here at Purdue in Computer Graphics Technology with a focus in animation, and a minor in art and design. Sounds nerdy, but i plan to work in the gaming industry when i graduate, hopefully in the chicago area, but most likely out in california. My interests include professional sports, GO COLTS, and i really enjoy art, and beer.

I expect to refine my web design knowledge in this class, and maybe even touch up my portfolio website if possible. The reason i decided to take this class is mainly because i need one more english credit to graduate, and i definately didnt want to write any papers or any of that garbage, plus, im in cgt and the course sort of fits my major.

I was wondering if we will be able to use programs like Dreamweaver on our projects...?(it would be very nice)

cmmazeik | Tue, 2007-01-09 17:09

My name is Catherine Mazeikas. I am a senior in Biology Education. I like to work with kids and I'm a big movie person.

I expect this class to be interesting. So far it seems to be, and I am glad I enrolled in this class instead of a writing class. I want to learn how to make and use my own website so that I can use it in my career.

A simple question: Will we be able to use what I create in this class later when I am in my career? Or will my website from Purdue expire when I graduate?

mgrider | Tue, 2007-01-09 17:09

My name is Melissa Grider. I am a senior in the Professional Writing Major.

I am taking this class because I am interested in marketing, publicity and all the other names it is known by. Marketing can go through many different mediums now and I want to get as much experience in them as possible. I have already taken English 420 and this class came highly recommended.

aczeskis | Tue, 2007-01-09 17:28

My name is Alexei Czeskis. Who am I? That's a loaded question. I guess I'm defined by my function at Purdue (senior in computer science and mathematics), my nationality (originally from Russia), my hobbies (karate, volleyball, soccer, fitness, reading), etc...

I expect this class to give me a perspective on how to present information in a way that will not only convey the intended meaning, but will also be aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

My question for you is: what do you believe to be the most important thing in life? Is there a reason you always use J. instead of your full first name?

jkung | Tue, 2007-01-09 17:14

Hello, I'm James Kung and am a junior in computer science and math. I grew up in West Lafayette so coming to Purdue was more or less destined. I'm interested in programming, music (creating and listening), and recently started freebording which has been pretty fun. I expected

I expected the class to be about learning to use computer technologies for getting information to others, and so far the class seems headed in that direction. I hope to gain some proficiency in areas I haven't studied yet (most of the items on the course survey). I enrolled because of the chance to have a hands-on learning experience with the technologies.

My question is: What music/bands do you listen to?

trutherf | Tue, 2007-01-09 17:12

1. My name is Troy Rutherford and I am from Paoli, Indiana. I am a junior in Microbiology. I enjoy playing golf, basketball, and I enjoy snowboarding and skateboarding. Luckily I have only broken my finger which was not from either one. I also enjoy working on cars. I have one older brother who graduated from Purdue.

2. I expect this class to allow me to improve my computer skills and especially my writing skills. Using multimedia with writing will make this class a more enjoyable experience and that is why I choose to take this class over the other english courses offered.

3. What kind of car do you drive?

lajackso's picture
lajackso | Tue, 2007-01-09 17:12

1. My name is Lailah Jackson. I am a senior in Computer Science here at Purdue. And I enjoy reading, drawing, watching movies, playing videogames, and playing Dungeons and Dragons with my friends.

2. I expect this class to be more interesting and useful than the more traditional business writing or technical writing courses. So far this seems to be true given what little I have read about the first project. Designing a website for a non-profit organization sounds fun. I expect to learn skills that will help me when I am part of a programming or graphics team at a company, and we have to present our work or sell an idea to a board of directors. I enrolled in this class rather than a business writing class because the business writing class sounded dreadfully boring.

3. Now that I'm done with my side of 20 questions... Joe, is teaching something that you have always pictured yourself doing, or is this merely a step towards a different goal? Not that there is anything wrong with teaching, one of my older brothers quite enjoys it.

Amber | Tue, 2007-01-09 17:12

My name is Amber and I'm a Math/Physics major. I love programming and fine arts, and so this course seemed like the perfect composition course to take. I chose this course because I'm very interested in learning more about designing websites and about creating other interactive media, and not at all interested in focusing on poetry or on creating works of fiction. So far this course is exactly what I hoped for. Creating alternative forms of media, such as designing packaging labels, sounds fun and I have already thought of many ways I can apply the knowledge that I will gain from this course.

My question for the instructor is: Will I, by the end of this course, have the skills necessary to create a user-friendly and attractive website (such as the one used for this course) for the display of my media?

Brownie | Tue, 2007-01-09 17:13

Hello! My name is Anuttam and my username is Brownie. I chose brownie because I like them and because I have brown skin (not too original!). I grew up in India and moved to London in 1998. However, I went to a boarding school in India for nine years before coming to Purdue. I am currently a sophomore hoping to graduate eventually with a computer science major and minors in Management and Film.

I chose this class because I needed a higher level English course and I thought I should take a mutimedia writing class instead of a boring business writing one.

My question for you is "Do you like Films?"

Sbudnik | Tue, 2007-01-09 17:14

1. My name is Steve Budnik. I'm a junior in Computer Graphics and I like to play with photoshop and other image editors.

2. I don't have many expectations for this class. I'm still not exactly sure what it's about, but I like the website and the first project seems pretty interesting, so things are looking good so far. It's a required course for my major, but that does not mean I won't enjoy it.

3. This website has a lot of tools that I think are going to be very beneficial. What programming language(s) did you use to make this? And where did you learn it/them? (Did you teach yourself?)

maslin (not verified) | Tue, 2007-01-09 17:14

I am Mary Jo Maslin, a Professional Writing major. My other interests are horticulture, music, travel, and reading.

I am interested in learning/using the technology available in this course to enhance my writing style, contexts, and opportunities. I work in business, therefore I believe this class will be more challenging than business writing.

What is the best-kept secret regarding the use of technology for writing?

bmartz | Tue, 2007-01-09 17:14

1. I am a junior majoring in math education. I plan to teach at either the middle school or high school level. I have a love for basketball and am a huge fan of college basketball.

2. For my major, I am required to take an "advanced composition" class. I've never really enjoyed writing papers, so I asked my advisor which course was least like a normal English class. She recommended this one, and it sounded fairly interesting, so I decided to take it. I hope to gain some knowledge on how to create multimedia works, an area that I'm not too familiar with.

3. Where are you from and where did you go to school? (two questions, sorry)

nickd | Tue, 2007-01-09 17:17

Hi, I am Nick Dapkus. I am a Junior here at Purdue majoring in Computer Graphics Technology with focus being Interactive Multimedia and Game Design. Interest are video games, drawing, and cartoons.

My expectations for this class is to improve my writing some when it comes to multimedia applications. So what I expect from the class is that I improve some to where my writing looks more professional. I basically rolled in this class because it fits for the type of writing I will be doing in my career.

What are the different types of multimedia areas will we go over?

kfillenw | Tue, 2007-01-09 17:17

My name is Kyle Fillenwarth (yeah, that's right. I know html. What!. I am a major in Computer Graphics Technology with a focus in 3D Animation. Subsequently technical writing for multimedia is a worthy class to take because it fits my interests and easily relates to my focus of study.

I suppose I'm not quite sure what to expect from the class. Since I enjoy working with multimedia, I certainly expect to have a great deal of fun working on the projects and reading the material.

Here's my one question:
In your mind, what is the one activity, if done regularly, would give the greatest chances for success in the class?

amontesd's picture
amontesd | Tue, 2007-01-09 17:17

Hi my name is Angelica. I am from Chicago. My interests are animated films and learning how to create them. My major is Computer Graphics Technology focused in animation with an Organizational Leadership and Supervision minor.

The class does not seem to be what I expected. I thought it was going to be heavy with written essays just about every week. I enrolled in this class because my career will be in computer animation and I thought is would be helpful. Plus, the other classes conflicted with my schedule.

My question: What will the midterm and final consist of?

amkoontz's picture
amkoontz | Tue, 2007-01-09 17:18

Hey everyone! My name is Ashley. I'm a senior and my major is in CGT. Hopefully I will be graduating next year. Oh, and I'm from Indianapolis. Some of my favorite things are art, photography, design, music, hanging out with friends, anything outside, having fun, working out/running, sports, soccer, traveling, and I love going to concerts. I also signed up for the mini marathon in Indy, so if anyone is also signed up, let me know! I recently went to Europe for my 3rd time and loved it. I really like the Italian soccer team.

I decided to take this class because my friend in CGT had previously taken this class and realy enjoyed it. I also think that it applies to the field I am specializing in which is Mulitmedia desin. And the other english classes I could've taken seemed quite boring to me.

My question to you is, if you could meet anyone (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

My name is Anthony. This is my third year at Purdue. I am interested in computers, movies, and music.

I chose this class because I am better with technology than with literature.

If you were a vegetable, would you rather be a carrot or an onion. Why?

1. Introduction
I am a microbiology and genetics major. I work in a plant pathology lab on campus. I love computers and video games.

2. Expectations
I expect to learn how to create compelling works of media writing. I wish to learn this because I think it is fun and because it beats any other english essay class I have taken.

3. You
Have you done any mainstream websites or works we might recognize?

P.S. Sorry for the lackluster sentences. This is the 4th time I've tried to post, I am a bit frustrated.

mcatt | Tue, 2007-01-09 19:21

My name is Mike Catt, this is my fourth year here at purdue and I am a CGT student. I enjoy watching movies and playing video games. I love sports, trying new things, and going on road trips.

I enrolled in this class because i needed to take another english class. I enrolled in this specific english class because it sounded like I wouldn't have to just write papers, which would make it a little more interesting.

My question for you is, what is the coolest place you have ever been to and why?
