How long will the meeting last between our individual groups and the contact?

re:
jtirrell's picture
jtirrell | Fri, 2007-01-12 13:05

That's something you'll work out with Ms. Emery.

temery | Mon, 2007-01-15 22:43

The group meetings with me can last as long as needed. We will schedule times that work for me and the majority of your group members. During this time we will review your progress and I will answer any questions you may have.

When setting up the meetings, just let me know how much time you think will be needed and I will do my best to accommodate your group's needs!

bmartz | Thu, 2007-01-11 17:15

How much of this project will we be working on with our groups during class time?

re:
jtirrell's picture
jtirrell | Fri, 2007-01-12 13:04

Actually, quite a bit. The days in the calendar that are marked as "website workshop" are days when the groups can work on the site and speak with me about what kind of things they need help with or would like to learn.

May we use open source designs ie. drupal/oswd ?
When will we know who is in our group?
Can we have the electronic version of the pamphlets to post on the site?

re:
jtirrell's picture
jtirrell | Fri, 2007-01-12 13:06

Using Drupal or OSWD is fine with me as long as it's fine with the client. These kind of issues come down to what the client's needs are. I will put you in groups on Tuesday (1/16).

temery | Mon, 2007-01-15 22:52

I am not familiar with drupal/oswd. What my organization needs is an easy-to-manage site. I would like to be able to update the site in Dreamweaver, so if using drupal/oswd allows me to do that I have no problem with them.

As far as electronic versions of pamphlets, I will work on getting those posted on this site as soon as possible.

slmcnutt | Thu, 2007-01-11 17:15

How much creative freedom do we have with this particular site? Does the organization have any particular design particulars they would like to see, such as color scheme, graphics, or dynamic functionality?

Also, may we use the graphics which are found in the folder handout we recieved?

temery | Mon, 2007-01-15 23:05

Your groups have a lot of creative freedom on this project. I will be providing our organization's logo and it will be posted on this site. We will not dictate the color scheme, however during our meetings I may make color scheme suggestions. As you saw from my handout, the content for the site must be from particular sources; however the overall look is up for your group to decide.

REMEMBER: None of the online content should come from sources related to any tobacco company. You may see commercials on TV referring you to Philip Morris or RJ Reynolds information, but none of this can be included because it does not represent honest and reputable information.

Amber | Thu, 2007-01-11 17:16

Since the webpage will be hosted of the Purdue School of Pharmacy's site, will the information be geared more towards Purdue Faculty/Staff/Students, all of Indiana, or anybody nationwide?

temery | Mon, 2007-01-15 23:07

The Web page information should be geared towards residents in Tippecanoe County. Our organization serves all citizens of this county, including Purdue faculty/staff/students.

jkung | Thu, 2007-01-11 17:16

Who will be maintaining/updating the website after we're gone, and how detailed will we need to describe the components we create? For instance, can we count on someone understanding the scripting language we use?

temery | Mon, 2007-01-15 23:12

I will be the person maintaining/updating the site after you all are finished with the project. I have some experience with Dreamweaver, but you will need to describe the components you create (especially the areas that may become dated and will need changed).

This may not answer you question completely, so I will discuss this issue with Jeremy.

trutherf | Thu, 2007-01-11 17:17

Will we need to include all of the partner organizations and other resources in the website, or do we pick which resources we think are necessary or most important?

temery | Mon, 2007-01-15 23:19

Definitely include all of the Partner Organizations. These are agencies that receive grant funding from the Tobacco Free Partnership and conduct programs on tobacco cessation and education.

As far as the other resources, please feel free to review them and exclude any that seem out of date or irrelevant. If you have questions about a particular resource, please post it here and I will personally review it.

If we are NOT good with writing code but excel in the art/design aspects of web design, will you be teaching any CSS or other web based languages besides HTML to help us catch up a bit for this particular project?

re:

jtirrell | Fri, 2007-01-12 13:12

On the workshop days we can look at some of those kinds of things, but the reality is that this is not a coding class, and we simply don't have the time to go over it all in class. Also, because the class is heterogeneous, only some people would benefit from such a discussion, and the others would tune out.

aplahr | Thu, 2007-01-11 17:18

Will this website be widely accessible to the public or will the public only find it if they know where to look for it?

temery | Mon, 2007-01-15 23:24

When completed, I would like for this Web site to appear in a Google search. The Tobacco Free Partnership also plans to have newspaper advertisements directing local citizens to the site. The site will also be linked from other local Web sites (such as the Purdue School of Nursing site, City of West Lafayette, etc).

kfillenw | Thu, 2007-01-11 17:20

May we use images that we have produced ourselves on the website?

temery | Mon, 2007-01-15 23:26

I don't have a problem with using graphics you have produced, as long as they are relevant.

amontesd's picture
amontesd | Thu, 2007-01-11 17:20

Are we able to use the Purdue University seal on the website?

temery | Mon, 2007-01-15 23:28

Purdue logos and images should not be the main focus of the Web site because we serve the entire county.

smith488's picture
smith488 | Thu, 2007-01-11 17:20

Since this is an educational project are we allowed to post copywritted material?

re:
jtirrell's picture
jtirrell | Fri, 2007-01-12 13:13

That's a good question, and Ms. Emery may be able to help us out on this one. I can tell you that basically you should never use any copyrighted work for any reason, because that way you avoid any potential trouble. There are some usages that are protected by what is called "fair use," but what is protected is quite murky.

temery | Mon, 2007-01-15 23:36

Many of the materials I will provide you will have a copyright by ITPC (Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation). All of these materials are fine to use because our organization is funded by ITPC. Any other resources, I will need to review. Please let me know if you have found material with copyrights that I have asked you to use or you want to use.

re:
jtirrell's picture
jtirrell | Tue, 2007-01-16 14:27

Some of this material is now on the Project 1 page.

nickd | Thu, 2007-01-11 17:20

Is there a collection of photos that can be provided for the website to use?

temery | Mon, 2007-01-15 23:37

I will provide some photos that you are free to use on this project.

re:
jtirrell's picture
jtirrell | Tue, 2007-01-16 14:28

These photos are now in an archive on the Project 1 page. Also, don't forget that the library has royalty-free images, as well. I also have collections of royalty-free images, too.

mgrider | Thu, 2007-01-11 17:21

Will we need to produce our own images (pictures of people outdoors) for this project?

re:
jtirrell's picture
jtirrell | Fri, 2007-01-12 13:15

I can point out that the library has a number of royalty-free image collections on CD that you can use in any project, commercial or noncommercial. This means that you may not need to produce your own stock images of people sitting around, laughing, etc.

temery | Mon, 2007-01-15 23:40

Your groups are free to produce your own images or use the photos I provide. However, if you take pictures of people you will have to have them sign a release allowing us to use their photo.

Sbudnik | Thu, 2007-01-11 17:22

Are we going to go over how to make this website as far as which languages to use and how to use them, or are we responsible as groups to teach each other a specific language? i.e. I know a little about php, but not enough to make a fully functional website. So if my group decides to use php will I have to rely on them to teach me how to code?

re:
jtirrell's picture
jtirrell | Fri, 2007-01-12 13:17

I will not dictate what you should use to make your website, be it coding or a visual editor like Dreamweaver. Groups will have to figure out what they want to do to create the site. (Keep in mind this isn't a coding class.) I will be available during workshop days to provide whatever assistance I can.

Will Ms. Emery be returning to our class for our website drafts on Feb. 1st? ie. Will each group have to make a formal presentation of what they have accomplished so far for her to critique? If so, would this be a private presentation, or during class so that all could watch and benefit?

re:
jtirrell's picture
jtirrell | Fri, 2007-01-12 13:21

Good questions. For the draft versions, we will post them and Ms. Emery will look at them on her own time. Groups will meet personally with Ms. Emery for feedback on the draft versions (this is the meeting mentioned in the project page). Groups may or may not make a formal presentation of their final websites for Ms. Emery and other members of her organization. At this time, we are not certain if this will happen, but I will of course keep the class informed.

Brownie | Thu, 2007-01-11 17:25

Will we allow people to sign up themselves or a friend/family member to a mailing list of some sorts?

---
Anuttam Mahapatra

temery | Mon, 2007-01-15 23:44

I hadn't thought of this! I think a place for interested people to sign up for an email list of Tobacco Free Partnership news would be a nice touch. Do you need any other information to make this happen?

mcatt | Thu, 2007-01-11 18:26

Are we going to be able to include testimonies out of these packets on the website? Or would that involve copyright issues?

temery | Mon, 2007-01-15 23:47

I will check on this and post when I get a definitive answer.

temery | Tue, 2007-01-23 13:04

I have checked with the appropriate sources and you can use the testimonies included in the packets I gave you in class (The testimonies on the white paper titled "Real People Who Live without Tobacco").

test | Thu, 2007-02-01 16:57

Ms. Emery,

Will there be a computer with an internet connection available at the meeting, or should the groups try to bring a laptop with a wireless connection?

temery | Thu, 2007-02-08 14:23

Several of the groups asked me to provide additional information. This information does not have to be used and is optional for all the groups.

Quotes that can be used:

- Tobacco is the only legal product that kills one-third of its users when used as directed (CDC, 1996)

- "The debate is over. The science is clear. Secondhand smoke is not a mere annoyance but a serious health hazard." U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona (June 27, 2006)

One group asked if the Quitline brochure could be made into a PDF and the answer is YES. You can find the brochure here:

http://smokefreeindiana.org/Upload/Files/General1.pdf

Also, there is a factsheet about the Quitline that might be helpful.

One group requested the history of the TFP...

In 2001, the Indiana Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Executive Board was created with funds generated by the Master Settlement Agreement between 46 state Attorneys General and the tobacco industry, and by legislation enacted by the Indiana General Assembly and Governor Frank O’ Bannon. The Board is responsible for developing programs to prevent and reduce the usage of tobacco and tobacco products in Indiana by utilizing best practices for tobacco control programs developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2002, community-based programs in each of Indiana’s counties began receiving money to develop tobacco prevention and cessation programs to address local needs related to tobacco use. Through this community-based funding, the Tobacco Free Partnership began serving the citizens of Tippecanoe County. Our focus was, and continues to be, on a combination of cessation initiatives, public awareness on secondhand smoke, and youth prevention.

In 2005, Purdue University’s School of Nursing began serving as the Tobacco Free Partnership’s lead agency, providing logistical, administrative, and organizational support.
