Educational Experience
4. I took COM 114, the fundamentals of speech communication in last spring semester. This special but tough course taught me various skills that can be used in many areas when I need to make a presentation. First, I learned how and where to start researching sources and information for certain topics. Also I know how to write neat concise outline that can help me preparing my presentation. Before I took the class I was scared of making public speeches in front of people by English. But doing many impromptus and four regular public speeches, I am now not as nervous as I used to be. Moreover, from our last speech, a group speech has taught me not just strategies and tips of making good speeches but also how important is to work as a group. Arranging time for our meetings and be on time was the very basic step for us to work as a group. While combining ideas and trying to come up with solutions to our problem, we argued and tried to understand others as well. It was my first time working group speech, this taught me not just how to make a great speech but how to manage get along with other people.
In Spring Break, I volunteered for Ultimate Spring Break Challenge to help people in New Orleans who are still having difficult time recovering from Hurricane Katrina. I spend my whole one week of spring break helping them rebuilding their houses destroyed by Katrina. I also broken down abandon houses left alone without its owner so that people can build new houses. First, I found how happy and lucky I was and I wanted to sincerely thank my parents for it. Staying in Purdue as an international student, I was not able to go anywhere further away from school. I was only focusing on my academic areas thinking getting good grade is the only matter. But after going to New Orleans, I had a chance not only to look at myself but look back at others who truly needs someone’s help.

5. I have offered to join The National Society of Collegiate Scholars because of my academic success.
I have received certificate of academic achievement by Purdue for demonstrating academic excellence by a 4.0 GPA in the fall semester of the year 2006.

Skills
6. I went to three different elementary schools, two different middle schools, high school where I knew nobody and finally I came to college where I am far way from home also not knowing anyone. Staying in many different places gave me a broad perspective and open mind to understanding others and their cultures better and easier. My skill that can be rise above the ordinary is adapting to new environments in short time. My positive active personality helps making new friends and absorbs different customs or rules quickly. Also I am not afraid of trying new things. Because of my adventurous nature, I am open to various kind of job seeking. Also knowing many international friends since elementary school because I went to elementary and middle school in United States, I still keep in touch with my friends even though I can’t see them very often. This can be a great help when I search for a job, having a chance to hear and get local information which I won’t be able to get from where I am. Especially I like to step up and be a leader, making planes for projects, organizing what to work, dividing each task with group members and combining each idea to come up with one big idea. I was selected as a class president in my three years of high school winning many class to class competitions. Also I actively step forward when there is a family union and events make sure everyone are involved and having good time.

7. From my short experience volunteered for Children’s public library, I had a chance to be with little children help them reading books. Handling children are not as easy as it seems but most important skill is to listen to what they are trying to say and praise at their efforts. Also when I volunteered for teaching Korean to foreign workers, it was important to show a respect, understand their current situation and remember what they have told me. Especially, showing interest on their culture was a great way to be friend with them quickly. I can speak Korean very well and can speak little bit of Japanese.

8. I can use Microsoft Word and PowerPoint well enough to make documents or slides for presentation. Also I know how to use Hanbangye v3.22, the program making captions for movies and dramas where you can watch through Windows Player. I have made few captions for American drama The O.C Season 3 by using Hangbangye.

9. When I volunteered for helping people from Hurricane Katirna, my first job was to paint the house which needs whole new painting from top to bottom. I got a chance to use all the equipment you need for painting such as brush, trimmer and roller.
