First off, I don’t know how this can be done in 10 minutes! I think this was a great activity, but sometimes it was a bit difficult comparing resumes with entirely different objectives. When I realized I was spending a little too much time on the first few I began rapidly looking through the rest of the stack. I feel that I was slightly biased on the first ones whereas I felt many of the last ones were a blur.
The formats and objective began to play a very large role towards the end of the stack. The 5 resumes I chose were 2, 9, 22, 26, and 32. As I was rolling through the stack, these were the ones that made the cut for me. Even though I wrote down any resume I thought had a decent format on a piece of paper, I began to look into the objectives and work experience. I also noticed the ones I picked usually had a very clear cut objective. I came across several resumes with very vague or no objective statement and I was not sure what I was looking for.
I chose these for several reasons:
2 – Very simple and clean format. My eyes were drawn straight to the objective and major.
9 – Very strong objective statement. I knew right away what the applicant was looking for. My eyes were also drawn from there to the related work experience which fit well with the job.
22 – The format and font are both professional. The format is a little bit different than the others and I read. I also like the way the first to page breaks are bolded then it goes to a smaller line.
26 – Good simple format. Right after the very clear objective statement my eyes were drawn to the experience. Good use of page space.
32 – Basically my same comments, good format and objective statement. I like the way your sections are to the left and allows for a quick glance over.
I noticed a couple of the ones I picked were also other people’s picks. I would imagine this is due to the format which is quickly readable, or leaves an impression on the reader. Overall I saw a lot of good resumes and I have a lot of new ideas for the improvement of mine.
