Data map design plan first draft workshop

jtirrell — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 09:17
Look at the data map examples from students in a previous semester and find one that is similar in some way to the data map you would like to create. Post a comment here responding to the following two prompts:
- Describe one feature or technique of the example draft that you think works well and that you might be able to adopt in your own work.
- Describe one feature or technique of the example draft that you think wouldn't work well in your own work and explain why it would not.
data maps
boiler16 — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:09The nuclear energy data map had one graph that I think I will do something close to that. It mapped the nuclear energy for various countries and I would map each school at Purdue mapping how many majors in that school require a statistics class to graduate. This format is very effective and would be easy to use in a meeting that you do not have much time to give so much information.
This draft also had many use of graphics and multiple charts. For my map, I don't think that graphics will be useful since in a meeting or presentation, you have to show as much content. It needs to be visually appealing, but not full of pictures. Multiple charts are also hard to follow, and I want to focus on one or possibly 2 charts to show my data.
Data Map analysis
podarcze — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:05I looked at draft5 by BobbyM3.
1.He did a shot chart of hockey showing where the goal was scored on a power play. His technique to show which ones scored and which ones didn't is very similar to something that I would have done for mine. I could make it very similar for baseball and which pitches were hit into play.
2. The strategy that he concluded to based on his data seems like it might be a little hard for me to do something similar. Because there are many different ways to pitch a batter, rather than just scoring a goal or not.
1. The iTunes data map is
sdr2010 — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:061. The iTunes data map is very similar to one of my project ideas. It utilizes web based interactivity to get the information across to the audience. The audiences ability to change the look and feel of the map is a great feature that would work well in my case. Everyone experiences information consumption somewhat differently, and being able to tailor the information would be fantastic.
2. In contrast, my map will rely more on symbols to quickly and efficiently express data than the iTunes map. It relies on text alone to relay the information. This works well for that data set, but would not work in my case. My hope is that my map will allow users to gather the information they are looking for quickly, accurately, and with minimal reading required.
How to score better on the Powerplay
Cookz — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:061. I think the scatter plot idea works well in this data map. It shows where the shots were taken from and where the goals were scored from when the pucks are overlaid on a hockey rink. This would work well for my data map because there will be data in a scattered sort of display similar to this.
2. The design of overlaying the shots on a hockey rink background would not work well for me. I'm not doing hockey shots so that is one reason that it wouldn't work, but the entire idea of overlaying something spacially (sp?) wouldn't work as I need to include axis's and numbers that will locate the points vs. this example where you can see where the points are located because of the background.
One feature that I thought
turtle power! — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:07One feature that I thought worked well was the map representing the best places to shoot on an ice rink during a hockey game. I think I could use this towards my map because it shows the best places to achieve one purpose: a goal. My maps are to show one purpose, where each guest user clicks.

A feature or technique that I didn't think worked well was the solar system map. This does not apply to my map because I will not be mapping out set places, or showing the location of areas. Also, the map is inaccurate because planets do not travel in perfect circular orbits.
Design
islington — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:07"The Effect of Illegal Music Downloads" does a few things correctly, and others to avoid completely.
1. I would certainly take layout into consideration. It is clean, clear, and easily understood. It doesn't let anything bog it down. I also like the smaller facts posted below the data, though not sure what some of it is for. This would be incorporated mostly in a more streamlined, minimalist style.
2. I would avoid representing data as they did in the second chart. The illegal downloads compared to legal purchases is only apart by a power of ten. The red section they show is much too large compared to the black dot. Data needs to be represented proportionately or it can become misrepresented. Therefore I would be absolutely certain that the data within my own map is accurate and fair.
map
lefty150 — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:08The one feature of the example draft that I looked at used a time line. I want to use a similar feature but instead of a time line I want to use a number line to display information. The example also provides details under each picture, which I plan on providing additional information under my graphics.
The one feature that I did not think would work well is all of the writing at the top of the time line. I plan on keeping it simple and not using too much text. If I used a lot of text, it would not help the audience understand the material I am trying to present.
1. The boxes that the stores
NEWMAN — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:081. The boxes that the stores for college students use are a very nice feature. They help organize the information well. This could be adopted into my own work by providing brief details about different provinces and show how control has shifted over the years.
2. The amount of text used in the brewing data map seems to be a little much. This probably would not work well in mine as to much text would clutter the map and make it difficult to understand.
You-reek-a moment.
Doomsday Forte — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:08I have an idea of what I'm going to do now. Ahahaha.
1.) The example draft (for example, the Starcraft Terran race tech tree (for buildings)) was pretty in-depth, not only giving the order in which buildings can be created, but lists the resource costs of the building itself, and any unit the building can create is listed as well (along with costs).
2.) I think it was kinda cluttered up though. That and having some units with a requisite building being listed alongside a building (and having said requisite building below the unit-producer) was a bit confusing (to the unsavvy viewer).
Your entire life has been a mathematical error. A mathematical error I'm ABOUT TO CORRECT.

Powerplay Goals
cechambe — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:081) Their use of mulit-colored dots explaining shots taken and shots scored works very well. Using multiple colors on data maps can compress a mass amount of information into something very simple and easy to understand.
2) The overall design of the page is rather boring in my opinion. Although it is very simple and easy to understand there is a lot of empty space that feels as if it should be used to explain more. I believe that the designer should use all the space given to them, not necessarily create a 'busy' page that is complicated, but I fell more relevant information could be added.
Family Tree
Xwing328 — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:08If I were to follow the Argonautica family tree example, I think my Star Wars family tree idea would work well if the design used a similar simple key. For people unfamiliar with the characters, the male and female colors would be helpful, especially since some of the fictional names are harder to distinguish by gender than American names like we are used to. In addition, with several characters having adopted parents/siblings, a similar distinguishing symbol or line style could help eliminate additional confusion.
I don't think having text boxes with character information would work well, however, as there are many more characters that could be included on the Star Wars map. With the text alongside the names, the tree would be much to crowded, and it would be nearly impossible to fit everyone within a reasonable amount of space. If, instead, the text box information only showed when you clicked on a name, it might prove useful and informative, while remaining uncluttered.
First Draft
Pat — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:09One of the features of the data map that would work well for mine is the use of simple images being supported by text on the side of the page.
One of the features that wouldn't work well for mine is the maze. It would not be appropriate for an audience of college students trying to do laundry. It would also distract from the information.
One feature that I like is
almost famous — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:09One feature that I like is the use of color and pictures that only a few use in their designs. I really like the concept that http://www.digitalparlor.org/sp08/tirrell1/sites/digitalparlor.org.sp08.... uses, but I some of the words, for example "hold at a 45 degree angle" might be a little to advanced for the person completing the maze learning to brush their teeth.
One feature that I don't like is using too many words to describe. Many of these have words with color backgrounds, it kind of takes away from the visual idea. For example http://www.digitalparlor.org/sp08/tirrell1/sites/digitalparlor.org.sp08.... I think this person could have used more graphics to represent instead of the full color background to help with the understanding.
Data map
PyroJing — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:10The Final Terrain plot would be similar to my map with the use of branching diagram if I were to use my new idea on mapping the growth of Nintendo's Mario.
The context is different as this map is for a strategy game, and would have a different color scheme.
The Brushing the Teeth
Roachel — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:10The Brushing the Teeth Example
The example works really well because it clearing is intended for an audience of young children. I assume this data map would be located in a children's color book or similar type of activity book for children, which would be the appropriate medium.
Nuclear Energy in the World
This data map does not seem to work well visually, because there are too many graphs to keep the audiences focus.
After looking at the previous
noles32 — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:12After looking at the previous work from last semester, there was one project that I believe I'll adopt their technique to my own project. I really thought the math problem project the way broke down and visually display and the colors were well done.
I didn't like the technique for the HD DVD vs. Blue Ray with the color of the text and how hard it was to read the data. There was too much text and became hard to read and follow.
Response to Other Maps
RhythmRunneR — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:15After looking at the maps, I really liked the guitar hero interactive map. It displayed a lot of information related to the game and was easy to use. Though I don't particularly like guitar hero, many people do and the information provided is actually quite useful to them. What struck me was it's presentation: it looked good and the data wasn't confusing at all. Simple buttons allowed you to quickly find what you wanted to look at, and then the data was presented in simple text form. I can apply the simple yet effective layout of this map to my own.
The map I didn't like was the one of the solar system. It was extremely confusing because the labels were on the side of the map. The only reason I knew where each planets were was because I knew about the solar system, but if I didn't have that knowledge I'd have no idea what I was looking at. Given this map is probably geared towards an audience that doesn't know much about the solar system, that's a very bad thing. Since the data is so commonplace, those who do know the solar system will find nothing interesting. Combine that with bad graphics, and you have one ugly data map. My project needs to have clear labels to be understood, or it will face the same fate.
Final Terran
s5m32l3 — Fri, 09/12/2008 - 10:15By looking at the final terran map, I noticed that the characters link to each other in some way. It's a little busy so I didn't check it all out due to time. But in one of my ideas I linked Purdue football teams to the teams they play and whatever teams play each other that also plays Purdue. I plan on mapping it out similar to this map, but making the words more clearly to read.
