Data map first draft workshop

jtirrell — Sat, 09/13/2008 - 14:24
Using your data map first draft, respond in a comment to the following three prompts:
- Precisely where would your data map appear (in a specific magazine issue accompanying a particular article, on A/V endcaps in Best Buy, on a specific document included in Purdue freshman orientation packets, etc.)? Be weary of responding that your data map could go anywhere; this is probably not accurate, and it is certain that a text that could go anywhere is imperfectly suited to any particular context.
- Precisely who is the audience for your data map? (This is connected to the issue above.) It's usually not effective to respond that the audience for your data map is anyone. This is almost certainly not accurate, and it doesn't give you anything productive to use when shaping your data map to suit its audience.
- Precisely what does your data map seek to accomplish? What change will it cause to its situation?
1. My data map will not
turtle power! — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:451. My data map will not appear in public, rather, it will appear in a hidden portion of a website's main control panel. The reason for this is because it allows only the website admin to look at website statistics and find out where users are clicking. Generally this information is not something the public should access.
2. The audience for this map will be a webmaster, project manager, web designer or HCI expert. These will be the only possible people to view this information, simply because it is designed to show where people are clicking, so that these people can create more user-friendly websites.
3. My data map's main goal is to effectively and accurately display where each user clicks and to map out the precise locations of each click. The change that it could potentially cause is that it could cause the complete redesign of a website or changing the website's content areas around.
Workshop Response
Cookz — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:451.) My data map would be located with cigar humidors. It would be sold along with every humidor that gets sold, be it online or in a store. The user would then hopefully keep the data map next to the humidor until they figure out which temperature and relative humidity combination works best for them.
2.) My audience is cigar smokers, but more precisely new cigar smokers who have just purchased their first humidor. The information provided in my data map would have the most value for this demographic.
3.) My data map seeks to eliminate much of the confusion about cigar storage and aging among new cigar smokers. A cigar needs to be stored at a certain temperature and a certain relative humidity for it to keep well, and burn well. Many new cigar enthusiasts who have just purchased their first humidor have no idea where to keep their temperatures and relative humidities, my data map would serve as a guide to these users until they can figure out where they prefer to maintain these conditions.

Roachel — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:451. This data map would appear on the interior walls of the citybuses in West Lafayette and Lafayette, IN.
2. The audience for this data map includes students who attend Purdue University who are between the ages of 18-24. These students also must be users of the citybuses in order to see this data map. This group of audience also enjoys going out to parties on weekends and playing drinking games.
3. This data map is meant to keep the audience aware of the risk they are taking by sharing cups at parties or kissing someone they may not know so well. In the end, they should be persuaded to take precautions at parties and avoid those types of situations.
Motorcycle Jacket Map
cechambe — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:461) My data map is best suited to appear in a motorcycle magazine (Sport Rider, Motocyclist, Race & Roadcourse, ect) as an advertisement. It is also suited for online capabilities, most likely to be used on the manufacturer's website.
2) The audience is male sport bike riders with an age ranging from 20-35. The model jacket I used is an introductory jacket so it is also based towards new motorcycle owners/riders.
3) My data map's goal is to get people to buy the product. They should be able to view the advertisement as a learning tool for the jacket. It shows the features of the jacket, including safety features and comfort features. Another goal is to let riders know what "CE Approved Armor" is by showing them where it is located, giving them a better understanding of why they need it and how it will help them.
YOU GOT NEEDLE CANNON AND RUSH JET
Doomsday Forte — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:46The data map I'm going to throw out into the waiting arms of the world is probably going to appear in some form on a game-help website like GameFAQs.com or the like. Due to the visual nature of my map and the text-based nature of most help sites, it would be a definite compliment to have actual pictures to go with the text, though it can easily stand alone on its own.
The audience for my data map is any person playing the game Mega Man 3 for the NES, wishing to know a proper order to defeat the 8 main bosses, and what weapons to use on the other bosses in the mid-to-endgame. Visual nature coming into play again, but I do wish I could display this all as a video instead, as just a simple picture, while more effective than just text, is nowhere near as useful as a video run of a battle against the boss.
This data map will hopefully teach people a suggested order of facing the bosses in the game and perhaps increase their enjoyment to it more, as a simple trial-and-error process simply cannot be feasible in some aspects, due to the player not having all eight attainable weapons during any of the initial eight battles. And hey, if someone happens to look at the pictures and go "Oh wow I want this game" then that is great too, as it gets someone else interested in the game that wasn't already (and that person can come back to my pictures to prepare for battle against the bosses).
Your entire life has been a mathematical error. A mathematical error I'm ABOUT TO CORRECT.

Pat — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:461) Where my data map would appear is in the student laundry rooms around campus because it is a basic guide to doing laundry.
2) The audience for the data map is freshmen or students who are not used to doing their own laundry.
3) The effect that it seeks to accomplish is to help save the people that use it time and stress. If they follow its instructions their laundry should come out just fine.
Data Map First Draft
islington — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:461. The data map is mostly limited to online distribution. It would not be able to be placed in any sort of ad, and is too specific to go within a school related medium. Additionally, the creators of Dungeons and Dragons, Wizards of the Coast, would not really have a reason for placing it within their own rule books. Therefore, the chart would be placed on internet fan sites, such as dnd4.com, where there are several other tools and helpful ideas about the game. It would also be posted on forum spaces where others could look at it.
2. The audience is simply anyone who plays Dungeons and Dragons. More specifically however, are those who are newer to the game, and have trouble going through the entire process of making a character. This is meant to be a simple, streamlined table that will let others view the simple connections and benefits of playing specific races and classes. This way, they are able to make general decisions about their character, and then receive help from the actual players handbook when deciding how to distribute attributes and abilities, which are both too numerous to list in a simple chart.
3. The data map seeks to inform and educate anyone who is new to Dungeons and Dragons, or is trying to play Dungeons and Dragons, on how characters relate to each other. It certainly does not cover every option available. Instead, it focuses on class and race connections based on suggestions from the players handbook. But it takes these textual suggestions which are buried within the large amounts of rules, and places them in a visual, easy to read manner. This makes it simple for anyone to look and see what it is they want out of a character. The inclusion of pictures also allows them to imagine themselves as that character, and identify with the physical characteristics as well as the statistical ones. Hopefully by using this as a guide, more and more players will quickly become accustomed to Dungeons and Dragons, and feel as if they are truly part of the game and enjoy playing it.

almost famous — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 10:171. My data map would appear in a resident hall main office and with each individual RA and SR. It would be updated frequently and would be kept confidential.
2. The audience for this map would only be the residential life manager, the Resident Assistant of that building, and the Staff Resident of that community.
3. Currently, the staff at Hilltop takes the information and has it in list/ written format. This is hard for visual learners to use. By turning the info into a format that is easy to follow, it makes it more user friendly across the board no matter what type of learner is using it. By having it in a layout that is visual, the user is able to quickly see which rooms are conflict rooms and which rooms need more attention. This allows the user to concentrate on those that need more attention and which rooms are friends. This also helps the users become aware of their interpersonal interactions just by looking at a picture instead of reading about them.
1. This data map would appear
NEWMAN — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:471. This data map would appear in an article on a news website. The map would go alongside and article that tracks the progression that has been made in Iraq. Also, though it could be used in a report that discusses the history of the country.
2. The audience would be people that are looking for how power has been transferred back to the Iraqi people. Someone who is also just reading the news on the internet could be an audience member. Lastly, a student that is looking to do research for a paper or another type of project could use the map as a source that shows major events in the past two years.
3. The maps purpose id to show how power has been transferred back to the Iraqi people over the past two years. Also, the map lists major points in the past two years that involve giving control back to the Iraqi government. Finally, the goal of this map is to show how much progress has been made in establishing control in the provinces and then giving that control over to the Iraqis.
data map
podarcze — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:491. My data map would appear in a scouting report for a baseball team for when they are facing Roy Oswalt. This map shows how he pitched lefty and righty batters for a game. Scouting reports try to give as much information about the other team as possible. This is done by watching games and plotting data. This shows where he tends to throw for batters on either side of the plate as well as what pitch he might tend to use.
2. The audience for this map is the manager of an opposing team as well as the batters that will face this pitcher in his upcoming start. Opposing teams will look at this to get a feel for where in the zone the pitcher tries to pitch, as well as which pitch he might throw. Sometimes this might be for the pitchers team if he were to lose, to try and analyze why he lost, and maybe they could change his pitch calling.
3. The main thing my data map seeks to accomplish is to give a team as much information when they come up to the plate against this pitcher. Not a single batter likes going up to the plate "blindly." They want to be able to go up to the plate with at least a guess of where the pitch will be. The main change that this map will cause to its situation is that the batter might be able to be one step ahead of the pitcher and guess where he will throw the ball. When he does that, it will result in a hit that could end up changing the game by driving in some runs.
The best place for my data
PyroJing — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:53The best place for my data map to appear would be in an issue of Nintendo Power Magazine. Here it would hit the most people this map is intended for, seeing as only Nintendo fans are going to purchase a Nintendo Power magazine.
My data map would be viewed by video game and Nintendo Super Mario fans who buy the Nintendo Power publication. It will be looked at by people who don't already know Mario's complete history, or for those who do and want a nostalgic look-back.
My data map seeks to inform the user visually of the complete history of Super Mario, using a time-line to chronologically sort them. It will show what console they were from and a picture of either game-play or the box art.
data map draft 1
boiler16 — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:531. A map of the area high schools near my hometown that do or do not have a probability and statistics program would be seen in a meeting with school administration and the board members. It could be during an interview, a private meeting with administrators, or even at a school board meeting. This data map would be used in one of these schools that do not have the program, and this meeting is discussing how to make the school academically better.
2. The audience for this map is the school administration and the school board members of a school lacking a probability and statistics program.
3. The goal of this data map is to show the administration and board members that others schools in the area are offering classes that other students in their particular school have no chance of taking. I am hoping that after the audience sees that many schools in the surrounding counties offer such programs that they should have a probability and statistics program as well.
The Star Wars Family Tree
Xwing328 — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:50The Star Wars Family Tree data map would appear on the StarWars.com website as an interactive feature for fans, visitors, and subscribers to the site. The map could tie in to the encyclopedic "Databank" section of the site, calling up short biographies or statistics about the fictional characters involved in the map.
The audience for the family tree primarily consists of English-speaking Americans with high-speed internet access. Ages range from middle school kids (ages 10-12) up to adults around 45, who were kids when the Star Wars movies first came out. In addition, they obviously have a passion for Star Wars and a curiosity to learn more about the saga.
The family tree seeks to educate its audience on the ties connecting many of the main characters of the six Star Wars movies, while also bringing in many more characters from the wide range of novels, games, and comics published under the Star Wars franchise. While most fan-made trees will only show a single line of genealogy, this map attempts to merge them all together to show the true interconnectivity of the individuals in a legible fashion, all the while still providing interesting trivia about the characters.
Data map
LazerJ1 — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:511. This data map would most likely appear in either a fraternity magazine or just as a local document for the chapter’s benefit. As a local document, this data map could be placed in an area of high traffic in the fraternity so that all of the members can see it.
2. The data map’s audience is all members of the specific chapter’s fraternity. The audience could also include other chapters of the fraternity that read about it in the fraternity magazine. Lastly, the audience could include people interested in the statistics of hometown to major correlation in said fraternity.
3. This data map is showing the correlation, in a fraternity, of academic major to hometown. It will provide detailed information the relationship between people in the fraternity.
data map
lefty150 — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:521. My map would appear on a website. This website would be linked with another website that informs the audience what brands of laptop computers are available to be purchased.
2. The audience for my data map is the high school senior who is going to college and looking at purchasing a laptop computer. This map allows the high school senior to look at the different brands of laptops, and the starting value price of that laptop. The data map website allows the audience to click on the icon to learn more about that brand.
3. My map allows that audience to see the cheapest laptop prices for that brand of laptop. It also allows the user to click on the brand of laptop to learn more about that laptop from the company's website. It gives the audience a chance to compare prices from the different companies for the lowest priced laptop.
The changes that it will cause to the situation are that it allows the user to compare the cheapest laptop from one brand to another, and it allows the user to click on the icon to learn more information about that particular brand. This give the audience a chance to visually compare the laptop brands before making a purchase. It also allows the audience a chance to compare the laptops from the manufacture's website to other manufacture's website by clicking on the icons.
Ashton Kutcher Data Map
s5m32l3 — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:521) The data map I designed is of all the movies Ashton Kutcher has played in. This map could appear on a page of a magazine to highlight his success and how many movies he plays in each year. This map could also appear online if someone is trying to Google search Ashton Kutcher movies. This map would come up and the audience could easily see what the movie is, what year it was produced and what genre it is categorized in.
2) The audience for this map would most likely be Ashton Kutcher fans. It could be for anyone that admires, loves, or just likes his acting. It also could be if someone were to research Kutcher for a specific reason, they may need to know what movies he's played in. The audience could easily see that by looking at this site.
3) This data map seeks to accomplish an easier way to find a great movie starring Ashton Kutcher. If it were online a Google search would effectively find this site and reveal all the movies. If it were to be in a magazine it would accomplish it's goal for anyone reading the magazine and likes Ashton Kutcher. Every magazine is read by someone, and most likely this page would be in a popular magazine and would be seen by many people. It would change the way people view things. Instead of having to read a lot of words on a page, all the movie posters are spread out to easily find what you are looking for without having to read a lot of stuff. The year the movie was published is emphasized along with the genre of the movie. The map also includes upcoming movies in 2009, which would get the audience excited about Kutcher's upcoming films.
First Draft
noles32 — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:55My data map would be appearing in several Purdue reading sources on campus and regular mail. It's extremely important to have a post graduation salary survey throughout campus available for students to view in a packet, magazine or newspaper.
The information is primary aimed toward future students and current at Purdue University. Being able to have this information available would help out future or current students make a more inform decision of their future studies.
The post graduation salary survey will allow viewers to see the highest paying major at Purdue. In addition to seeing the highest pay salary it will show the average and low end marks for each given major. This will help student expect what they should make looking forward to making after college.
Workshoppin' It
RhythmRunneR — Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:551. My data map would most likely appear in a popular news or science magazine such as Newsweek or Popular Mechanics. It would accompany an article on information regarding the possibility of the sasquatch species. Also, the data map could be used on television shows such as Monster Quest to help viewers understand raw data easier.
2. The audience for this data map is mostly the general public but is also scientists and the government. While any average person might find this data interesting, it may help raise the eyes of scientists once they see how many sightings have been reported in certain areas. Potentially this could cause them to research bigfoot more in the highlighted hotspots. As for the government, a visual display of such data could (though highly unlikely) provoke them to allocate more money and resources to the search of this plausible creature.
3. My data map seeks to reveal the sheer quantity of bigfoot sightings in certain places around America to the aforementioned audience. Though it won't turn skeptics into believers, the point is to open up the possibility that man may have not yet discovered everything even in their own back yards. Perhaps this realization could attract increased attention into finding out once and for all whether the creature actually exists. Either way, the viewer will at least be entertained by the data presented in this map; or so is the hope.
