The are several strategies
lefty150 — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:13The are several strategies that this data map has. One strategy is the layout. The layout flows from the older generation to the younger generation. The color coding helps to allow the viewer to easily determine how each member is related. The different sizes of "people" helps to show who is older and who is younger between family members. The age and the year the person was married allows the viewer to determine what generation the person is. There is a clear distinction between male and female by the way the characters are shaped.
Visual map of Relationships through ACM SIGGRAPH Facebook Group

Arrangement
Xwing328 — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:11The SIGGRAPH data map is extremely complicated. As such, it is arranged in a manner best suited to achieving its goals. By placing the names of individuals in a roughly circular shape, it allows for lines to be drawn between each and every individual as needed. The colors used are very vivid and contrast well, which is essential in such a cluttered space, so that individual lines can be picked out and traced to and from their origins. Unfortunately, the arrangement of the Facebook SIGGRAPH group map places very little emphasis on varying font sizes. As a result, the title of the document is the same font size as individual data points on the map. This makes it hard for users to know where to focus on the design, since they cannot immediately spot the map's important features.

turtle power! — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:12This map does a successful job at displaying the link between your friends in the group and people you don't know, but share an interest with. Although there are several people on the map and each is connected to at least three different people, it is clear how each person is related to you, because of the use of multiple colors. The map at the top of the screen indicates what color of line is used to represent how each person is connected to you, which in this type of map, is essential, to avoid any unnecessary confusion.

Not bad, not bad...
RhythmRunneR — Wed, 09/10/2008 - 01:37This family tree data map is interesting because of the images of actual family members provided. Asides from showing the tree in itself, the photographs reveal what the people actually look like. Inclusion of state images also reveals where they live, and addition of pets is a nice extra touch. The only thing I'd recommend is that the data be spread out a little more to minimize confusion, and perhaps a few more family members. Besides that, good job.

noles32 — Wed, 09/10/2008 - 09:54I thought it was unique how to involved pets into the family tree. I think it makes it more personal and interesting to the audience. The way you place your family is very affective because it's easy to follow and to understand. The tactic of using family photos is very useful to your message your are trying to convey.

boiler16 — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:12How the creator used color made the map easy to follow. One is able to detect each person on this map and know if they are male or female and how they are related to the creator.
Also the arrows pointing to a specific person makes it easier to detect who your parents' siblings are and then you know who is related by marriage. The strategy of colors and arrows make it much easier for viewers to follow your family tree without confusion.

Arrangement on Family Tree
s5m32l3 — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:12The arrangement of your family tree is well organized. The grandparents are on top and noticeably labeled. Then it steps down to your parents, aunts and uncles, then a step down from that it shows how you connect to the tree along with all your cousins and brother and sister. The diagram is not too crowded and a key is not needed. It is obvious to see who the women are and who the men are in the family. The names of all the members are nicely listed below the people and there's no need to have to put uncle, aunt, cousin with each name because the entire row is labeled as a whole which keeps the diagram less complicated.

sdr2010 — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:11This piece is well suited for a blog post due to its small size and concise use of limited space. The file is around 120 KB, which is small enough for any internet connection to open up quickly. Utilization of two colors (red and black) relays the information quickly; the audience is not caught up in the lengthy process of viewing the map and then going back to a key to decipher the meaning. By arranging the data in a linear format the author allows the reader to naturally scan the information; similarly to how one would read text on a page. Simply put this piece is well designed for its medium: a blog post.
Distance
PyroJing — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:15The time line is a good use of presenting the data. The numbers are a bit confusing at first glance on what they represent, something to show it is the diameter might help. Everything else a quick and simple representation on how parents have rightfully become uptight with their kids wandering.
How to Clean Dvds

Arrangement
LazerJ1 — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:12The arrangement of this data map is very clean and easy to understand. This data map uses illustrations and text to show the steps of cleaning a dvd. The illustrations are clearly defined by the key at the beginning of the document.
The steps are also spaced out evenly. The steps listed are short and deal with only one specific part of the process, which makes it easy to understand. By using good diagrams and well thought out design this data map is very effective.
It looks like this data map
Cookz — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:11It looks like this data map was designed to inform the user how to properly and effectively clean a DVD. It gives step by step instructions with brief sentences and then it also provides graphics. The incorporation of graphics allows the user a better understanding of the instructions, it also provides those who are not capable of reading an opportunity to understand the instructions. The strategy of taking this process and breaking it down step by step simplifies the task and makes it much more approachable. Now instead of being confused or lost as to how to properly clean a DVD, the user can accomplish their goal in an effect way while maintaining a scratch free DVD. The colors that were chosen for the graphics are to the point, and very sensible. A hand is represented by a beige color that would be a hand, the disk is represented by the silver color that most disks are, the detergent and the cleaning liquid are properly colored but different from each other so as not to cause confusion and are clearly distinguishable. The cloths are also colored differently so as to be distinguishable from one another. The color choice and execution makes the graphics much more effective then if the colors were odd and non-sensicle. If the colors were different the user might spend as much time trying to understand the graphics as they should spend cleaning their DVD's.

NEWMAN — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:12This data map reminds me of the Basic Printing guide that was in one of the readings. It has minimal text and the images are very easy to understand. The arrangement of the images allow for a natural reading flow. Also, having the images showing what not to do when wiping the disc helps the user in preventing scratches to the disc.
The medium for this guide could be anything that involves a disc. It could be placed in a disc cleaning kit as well as packaged with a movie, game, or music disc. By doing this the user would be have the knowledge of cleaning the disc when it gets dirty.
Difference in color is well
almost famous — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:16Difference in color is well used here. Since the different color clothes are illustrated and also found in the materials needed bar it was easy to see what should be used at each time during the process. This really would insure success in accomplishing the goal of the task at hand.
The map key also used as the materials needed bar is really beneficial. It easy locates what items will be used and what they will be used for during the process.
This map has an easy to follow step-by-step procedure. The brain is trained to read left to right, top to bottom- this data map follows that. It is not cluttered and is simple enough to keep the attention of those using it.
Only criticism would be that someone may not take the time to read the materials needed and therefore not know what the colors mean, however it is laid out well enough that the eye should hit that area first.

Ooh, I kinda like this one.
Doomsday Forte — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:07I like how you decided to use various colors and icons to not only specify gender, but also in how they're related to you. I suppose this falls under "strategies" because you use visuals to convey information in tandem with the legend on the bottom, as opposed to simple text-based maps with too much information for so little space. Let's see...7 uncles, 5 aunts, 4 cousins of each gender, and 2 brothers?
Interesting. I wonder how you would have handled their ages in relation to you. Or did you even consider the ages at all? I noticed that they could be in order of age in relation to each other if you look from left to right, but this isn't listed anywhere.

Link to geographical map
ihatke — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:08If the strategy of this map was to be able to pinpoint the outliers of the data it would be very useful, or to show the shear number of people coming from the approximately same area. The color coding of grouping people within distances from each other provided a quick way to find the three people living near each other but no one else. Also, if there was a geographical map where the colored lines were linked to colored parts of the map, this may have presented a better way to communicate the data. You then could have shown clusters of people and where they are from.
Effectiveness of Arrangement
islington — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:14Within this social networking web, the location of hometowns within a thirty mile radius of one another is displayed utilizing color and web connections. However, while the map is effective in showing concentration of hometowns, or how many people live where, it is ineffective in justifying why this form of display is required in the first place.
Looking at the data, each individual is connected with various colored strings. However, looking closely it is noted that each color string corresponds to a group of people. So, for example, everyone connected by a red line lives within thirty miles of one another. However, they apparently do not live within thirty miles of anyone else. So it doesn't feel necessary to make a large scale web such as this, when the information is truly much more simple. There easily could have been a list of people, still color coded, who live within a thirty mile radius of one another, or perhaps a map of the United States simply locating each member on it. This type of data plotting seems to be more suited towards a continually increasing distance of connections. It seems as if everyone is within clusters rather than an overall web of distance. Meaning, that the ten or so red lined individuals seem to live nowhere near the six blue lined ones.
Also finally, the map shows nothing of where people live. So the information in itself seems rather ineffective, due to not knowing in relation where these locations actually are, which might be useful in a social group such as this one. However, the map is still effective of showing how many members of the group still live within a close mile radius of one another.

Strategies
cechambe — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:10The creator of this data map used a couple key strategies to make it easier to understand. First of all they used pictures, instead of solely text, in order to better explain each step involved in cleaning the disc. Second of all they order the steps very distinctly making them easier to accomplish and understand. Lastly they employ a simple simple right and wrong strategy using the circle with a crossed line that is very commonly used.
The only thing I think would make this data map easier to understand is if there were brief explanations of each step using text.
response
podarcze — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:12I think this iconograph does a good job of executing the task at hand because of the strategy that was used. The strategy seems to be to make this as straight forward as possible. It is very descriptive even though it uses just pictures. It shows how to hold the disc, how to clean it, and what to clean it with. It is very easy to understand because of the check mark and the red "do not do" signs.

Roachel — Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:14This data map uses a different color for each type of family member represented. This strategy helps clarify who exactly the people are in relation to Cechamble. Cechamble chose to have black represent his place in the family, which worked out well because he immediately stood out in the map. It helps the viewer make more sense of where everyone else is positioned in the family if they can clearly see you first.
