Post your questions about Project 1 in a comment.

What exactly do you mean by

NEWMAN — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 10:18

What exactly do you mean by "critical research"?

RE: What exactly do you mean by

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 09:36

Research aimed at critique (analysis) rather than collecting content.

For the data that we use, do

Cookz — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 10:19

For the data that we use, do we need to collect the data ourselves? Or use data that we have found through research?

jtirrell's picture

RE: For the data that we use, do

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 09:39

Data could be collected yourself (primary research) or taken from other sources (secondary research). The point is first to locate a situation and then respond to it appropriately. Thinking about the research first might be putting the cart before the horse, a bit.

Can we choose the same topic

turtle power! — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 10:19

Can we choose the same topic we chose for the exercise due in class today, or do we have to choose something completely different?

jtirrell's picture

RE: Can we choose the same topic

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 09:41

Well, the maps we analyzed for class have already been created. You could perhaps work with the same topic, but you don't want to recreate what has already been done.

Drafts

cechambe — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 10:20

Say we turn in our 1st draft and we get good remarks, is it ok to make minor changes for the second and 3rd drafts?

jtirrell's picture

RE: Drafts

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 09:43

It's really doubtful. Each draft cycle asks you to do different things.

Data

PyroJing — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 10:20

What's the best way for us to collect our data for these maps?

jtirrell's picture

RE: Data

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 09:44

That would depend, as all production choices do, on your statement of purpose (purpose, audience, context). Start with what you are trying to accomplish. That will suggest how you should obtain data.

Project 1 question

podarcze — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 10:20

Is there any specific type of data that we should focus on, or is this really an open-ended project? Also, just to clarify, we are creating the data map from scratch, and we are not basing it off of another already existing one, right?

jtirrell's picture

RE: Project 1 question

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 09:45

It's possible that you could revise an existing map, but you would have to shift its audience, context, or purpose, and make commensurate changes in medium, strategies, and arrangement. The point is first to locate a situation and then respond to it appropriately.

Are we able to take data from

sdr2010 — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 10:20

Are we able to take data from an old map and update the design it to better fit the audience, purpose, etc?

jtirrell's picture

RE: Are we able to take data from

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 09:46

Possibly. See above.

Design Plan

LazerJ1 — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 10:21

The Design Plan has a due date for next Friday. Are we going to go over the steps to building a Design plan in class? Will you be showing examples of good design plans to give us ideas for this project?

jtirrell's picture

RE: Design Plan

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 09:48
Yes. Also keep in mind that Compose, Design, Advocate gives you a process to construct a design plan and provides an example. Also, the Project 1 page has a link to design plan tips.

Digital submission

Xwing328 — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 10:21

You said we could submit it digitally. Would just a link to it on a personal website be acceptable, or do you prefer something like a CD-R?

jtirrell's picture

RE: Digital submission

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 09:51

The map should be in its intended final medium when turned in to me. That might be online, it might be a digital file, it might be printed. Choices of medium, like all production choices, hinge on your purpose, audience, and context.

Data Collection

ihatke — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 10:21

Are we collecting data ourselves? If not, are there restrictions to what data we may use?

jtirrell's picture

RE: Data Collection

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 09:53

You can do primary research, if doing so fits to your audience, purpose, and context. I'm not imposing additional restrictions. If the work fits, it is appropriate; if it doesn't, then it isn't.

project 1 question

boiler16 — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 10:22

Will we talk about different types of media that we can use to use for the data map?

Besides pictures and charts, I do not know what else is out there to do this assignment.

jtirrell's picture

RE: project 1 question

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 09:55

Choices of media will be dictated by your purpose, audience, and context. There are examples of different media on the Project 1 page. We will continue to do practice exercises visualizing data in the coming weeks.

Project Question

Pat — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 10:23

Will we be able to choose a topic and have you approve it or will there be a list of approved topics.

jtirrell's picture

RE: Project Question

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 09:58

You will choose your topic, but I will comment on your design plan drafts. If your topic doesn't seem feasible, it will show up in the comments.

What does the research

almost famous — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 10:25

What does the research entail?

jtirrell's picture

RE: What does the research

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 09:58

See above.

project 1 questions

lefty150 — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 13:05

When we choose our data map, do we have to come up with it ourselves or can it already be created? How detailed should this data map be? Can the data map be anything? Project 1 still is a little fuzzy to me. Will you be explaining more about project 1 in class?

jtirrell's picture

RE: project 1 questions

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 10:21

Well, you wouldn't want to re-create something that has already been made, because there would be no point in doing something that has already been done. The map's detail will be dictated by your purpose, audience, and context. The point of Project 1 is to identify a need in a situation and address it through data visualization. As such, the appearance and function of your map will be wholly shaped by what you are trying to accomplish, who you are speaking to, and the context of the communication.

Project 1 Question

Roachel — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 18:04

Can we use any type of data or do we need to make sure the data we have found is from a reliable source?

jtirrell's picture

RE: Project 1 Questions

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 10:27

Well, reliability is contextual rather than objective. What constitutes a good source will be dictated by your purpose, audience, and context, so you will find data that suits your situation.

Are going to be turning in

noles32 — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 19:25

Are going to be turning in all of drafts along with the final project? Is there a certain amount of pages(min or max) the project must be?

jtirrell's picture

RE: Are going to be turning in

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 10:30

No, previous drafts will not be turned in with the final version. There is no required page count. Documents should be sufficient long to accomplish their purpose.

Are you collecting our own

islington — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 21:10

Are you collecting our own data or finding more data charts to conduct our research with?

jtirrell's picture

RE: Are you collecting our own

jtirrell — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 10:31

You will collect your own data, either through primary or secondary research.

Design Map Question

RhythmRunneR — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 20:14

Does our design map have to include data taken from other websites or can we collect it in a survey ourselves?

project 1

s5m32l3 — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 22:18

Can we use a data map that has already been created, and just research our own information? Or does it have to be completely made up?
