After reading Beyond Words excerpt 1, respond in a comment to the following two prompts. Comments must be thorough and insightful to receive full credit.
- The "Basic Printing" setup guide on page 337 was a finalist in a technical communication contest. What do you think the judges might have liked about the documentation? How easily can you understand the instructions?
- Page 343 discusses The Weather Channel website. Look at the site yourself, then analyze it through one of our six main rhetorical elements (purpose, audience, context, medium, strategies, arrangement).

lefty150 — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 22:191. I think the judges might have liked this documentation because it is very easy to follow. It is very detailed and shows you precisely how to complete each step. Each step is broken up, and the steps are showed by red arrows. This procedure is done by using pictures instead of words, which makes it very universal to most languages. The few words that it uses fill in the missing steps that cannot be shown with pictures.
I can easily follow the instructions. The instructions are precise, and the pictures are detailed to make following the steps very easy. I can follow these instructions easier by following the pictures than trying to read a written document and follow the same type of procedure.
2.The purpose of The Weather Channel website is to allow a person to access the most up to date weather conditions at any time of the day. The website allows a person to check the local weather conditions, and it allows a person to check another city’s weather conditions. This website allows a person to find out how the weather is affecting other parts of the country. It allows a person to access weather videos, high and low temperatures, extended forecasts, radar, national weather forecasts, travel conditions, airport weather conditions, world weather conditions, pollen count, school forecasts, traffic conditions, etc. The Weather Channel is very versatile and allows a person to gather weather conditions for all different types of activities.

islington — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 23:04The "Basic Printing" setup guide has several factors that makes it appealing to viewers. The directions, overall, are very easily understood. The images are just technical enough to identify every piece of the printer, yet simplified enough to make setup simple. For more detailed instructions, smaller step by step information is provided below appropriate images. From the illustration, it is obvious that the printer allows two seperate printing configurations, and that you must set up a driver on your computer to use it. Specifically what I think the judges liked about the documentation was the simple color scheme, the clear illustrations, and the step by step guide to even the most simple movements. The color scheme is unobtrusive and reflects real life, leaving the printer white and indicating important information with colors typically associated with important imformation, such as yellow. The icons within the instructions are easy to understand, and maintain common symbols seen throughout society. Arrows indicate direction, exclimation points show points of interest, check marks for completed actions, and so on. The intructions do not simply assume the user knows what they are doing, but rather makes every little detail clear and consice. This makes the illustration easily understood and succesful in its execution.
The Weather Channel website is arranged in a manner fit for a normal news site. Because people usually go to the site specifically for weather forcast, it is not coy with the information. Directly on the front page like a headline at another news site is the current weather forcast informtaion someone might need. If they do need further information, users are able to enter their zip code information right at the top of the page for instant access. This field displays on every page of the site, so no matter where the user is, they can effectively retrieve information about the weather. Other news stories related to lifestyle and recreation, which could be tied to the weather, are place nearer to the bottom of the page due to relevance, but also hold a spot along the top navigation bar along with the other important topics found within the site. However, it is the websites obvious emphasis on weather, with news items placed directly in the middle, front and center, that creates the primary focus. The Weather Channel effectively does what it sets out to do simply by arranging the information in a prioritized and focused manner.

boiler16 — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 16:561. I think that the judges of this competition would like this very much. It is a great explanation on two different ways that you can load the paper into the printer. It shows step by step visual directions and close up pictures for smaller objects. I liked how it showed how the paper was to be fed through the printer before instructions were made so you could see what the final step should look like, and I think the judges would like this as well. I had no trouble following the directions and I think other people also would not have any trouble putting this together.
2. The arrangement of The Weather Channel website is well thought out. At the top it has an option to where you can put your own city's weather link (by the way this is really handy). Then they have their logo below that with the box to put in the location for where you want to know the weather. These two options are placed well because that is why most people go onto this website. They are easy to see and easy to navigate. Links below the logo are easy to read and follow. They are placed well so they do not overpower the site, but you still see them and know they exist. Then below this they have new stories and videos about weather that you can watch.
I like how there is no content in the margins because you are only focused on what is in front of you and you do not have to look all over the page for links. They are all in the center and easy to find. Finally at the bottoms there are links to customer service and Careers and other information. These are typically at the bottom, and not everyone will be looking for these so placing them at the bottom with quite a large font is a great way to arrange these elements.

LazerJ1 — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 17:281. Almost immediately it is noticed that the design of the Basic Printing setup guide is very clean and concise. The guide uses a numbered system to clearly show the steps in order for different parts of the printer. The guide is also sectioned off by lines so that it is difficult to be confused by the numbering. The zoom views provide extra detail to particularly difficult steps which increases the ease of use. Although the guide does not have a lot of text to support it, the illustrations provide adequate instruction.
2. The arrangement of the Weather Channel Website is well though out and professional looking. The website follows a very clean style with navigation at the top and bottom of the page. The contents are then displayed in the middle 2 or 3 columns(depending of the page). The website also has a feature which allows you to input your zip code or city and it will send you back local weather reports. On the home page there are videos of news reports which is great for finding specific reports. All of this leads to a well organized arrangement.

NEWMAN — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 17:531. I think that the judges would have noticed how easy it was to understand the images and the flow of the images. With the zoomed in parts for the different images it is very simple to see that to do as the user. Also, the natural flow of reading left to right and top to bottom makes the directions easy to follow. Lastly, the setup is guide is very clean. There are no extra lines of text or extra images in the guide. As a "Basic Printing" setup guide it is kept very basic and easy to use.
2. The purpose of The Weather Channel website is to get the most accurate, up-to-date weather information to the user. This is done by allowing the user to look up there local area as well as provide information about weather around the rest of the world. All of this information can help anyone from a gardener to a traveler. The Weather Channel also gives the latest alerts about severe weather all over the world. With headlines on the front page users can quickly jump to how weather is affecting the nation.

turtle power! — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 19:271. I think the judges would have liked how there were two sets of instructions, both of which using appropriate graphics. If you look at the graphics, they display clear depictions of each step required in refilling the printer with paper. Also, the steps are clearly marked, so the user has a good understanding as to which step to approach next. There are good visual cues, describing which way to feed the paper in the printer as well as detailed pictures that have zoomed-in bubbles to further show accuracy. The final steps inform the user when the process is complete by a check mark, followed by brief instructions making sure the printer has accepted the paper properly.
2. By looking at the Weather Channel's website, I have decided to analyze its sense of purpose. The main purpose, as the name implies, is to accurately provide forecast weather information for any city in the United States. Not only does it serve this main purpose, but it also serves many other purposes as well, including regional weather information, various maps to display different data and news about upcoming storms. The regional weather information can be a valuable bit of information for people who travel often, for it will show them approximately what type of weather to expect, as well as how to prepare for the weather. The various maps displayed on the website are extremely helpful, in that in a brief amount of time, any user can find information about the amount of rain or snow fall in an area, the approximate climate, as well as tornado information.

noles32 — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 19:44There are numerous of strong reason why this was a finalist in a technical communication contest. In analyzing the "Basic Printing" laser printer guide, the judges probably liked the context flow, design layout and detailed images. The context flow is display the appropriate way with correct size font and placement of text for readers to understand needed areas. The printer guide display knowledge of a design layout with breaking up section of step to not make it so congested and to understand. One of the main reason why I think it's easy to understand the instruction is based upon the detailed images The creator did a great job have zoom in spot to clarified aspect of the printer for the user to follow. Not to mention each image is highly detailed with ideal reference of printer and printer parts.
The Weather Channel website is arranged in a professional matter and makes navigation easy for anyone to use. Displaying the current news in the center of the website in bold helps attracts the users to up to date current weather events. Following off that initial idea, the other current events videos that are a little older that the user might have missed are right below for easy access in a smaller font. The tabs at the mid top of the page are effectively shown with proper color scheme to help guide users to other areas of the website. After your eyes are attracted to the center of the page, then the eye flow moves to the top of the page, because of the cloud background image which guides the users’ eye to box to where you can find your local weather by typing in your zip code.

Xwing328 — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 21:52The judges most likely liked the "Basic Printing" technical document for several reasons. First, it had a clear purpose: the necessary steps and configurations available for basic printing. Right away, it shows that there are two configurations available, and it even maps out the path paper takes, which is extremely helpful for double-sided printing. Additionally, the numbered steps are very easy to follow, from left to right, the order that Americans consider normal. However, the document does not just help English speakers; instead, it presents images in a fashion that can ideally be understood universally, with accompanying captions in six total languages. The text is kept to the bare minimum, to prevent clutter and promote legibility. Also, the bright red and yellow inks are reserved for important points of the chart that should be focused on; namely, the directional arrows and warning symbols. Lastly, a web address is provided so that customers with further questions can assuage their curiosity.
The Weather Channel website is arranged in a fashion that most internet users are familiar. Navigation is presented close to the top, so that users can quickly and easily jump to the sections they want. Additionally, the footer repeats some of the basic navigation, allowing users to once more find their desired page without having to scroll back to the top. The footer also contains copyright information and links to other sites, which is placed at the bottom because it is non-essential to the function of the site and thus does not need to be seen, unless specifically looking for it. The body of the website is centered on the page, which keeps the content from looking out of place, especially on extremely large monitors that leave swaths of empty space. Interestingly, The Weather Channel website designer chose to make the drop-down navigation "drop" up. Although most websites feature navigation menus that drop down when moused over, the up feature of The Weather Channel allows the links to cover up non-essential information (ie. the header image) instead of covering up the important body content. The remainder of the site—the main content—is broken up into columns based upon the type of content. The leftmost column holds videos, the middle column primarily contains text-based HTML pages, and the far right holds weather-related applets. Overall, it is a fairly well arranged site, with the information you want easy to find.
Falcon PAAAAAAAAAAAAUNCH!!!
Doomsday Forte — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 21:531.) This thing was graphics-heavy. I mean, okay, you can probably take away the text and someone could potentially still be able to print documents. Unlike a text-and-graphics setup where one would have both to refer to, this is almost purely graphical, which is handy as it not only breaks the language barrier with common images, but it can be handy for illiterate people too.
As to why an illiterate person would be operating a computer and a printer no less, well, I can't answer that.
2.) First of all, I have to say that the site is laughable if you have an AdBlock or NoScript thing in use. Nothing but white with lots of text links! That aside, the purpose of the site is to not only provide up-to-date weather forecasts for the specified areas, but it also serves as a supplement to the actual Weather Channel channel. While not as good as the real thing, if the cable were out and a tornado were heading your way (and the Internet somehow was still on), it would be a better way of keeping track of conditions in your area, at least, better than nothing.
Your entire life has been a mathematical error. A mathematical error I'm ABOUT TO CORRECT.

Pat — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 22:261) On the "Basic Printing" guide the judges may have liked how the guide was divided to explain for two different printers and yet wasn't disorganized or confusing. The author made good use of vertical and horizontal lines to divide the sections without drawing your attention to them. The two different printers had the same final steps, so instead of illustrating them twice the author merged the two sets of instructions where they became the same. Each step was detailed but not to a point where it gave worthless information. Where two steps could be condensed into one, like step three in the bottom half, it saved space and time.
2) The Weather Channel website is mainly for anyone with access to a computer who wants to know what the weather of today and upcoming days will be. The purpose of the site is to clearly and quickly display weather information whether it be local, national, or international. They have an input box at the top of the page so you can enter a zip code or address and get the weather for that area. The ability for the user to check the weather anytime and almost anywhere is a major advantage for making plans. The links that allow you to check the local weather, which is most likely the most used link, is right at the top of the page and clearly marked. The rest of the links are arranged below in a categorized manor. Below those are news stories related to weather issues such as the coming of Tropical storm Hanna.

sdr2010 — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 22:271. The layout of the technical communication on page 337 allows the viewer to quickly understand the audience and purpose. It takes little time to understand that this is a manual for loading media into a print tray. Strong contrasting colors (red, white, black, and blue-gray) allow the viewer to focus on the message instead of trying to discern what each may represent. A balanced grid keeps the users eye flowing through the design, and the illustrations explain process without relying on words for a crutch. Judges probably liked this piece because of the simplicity with which it explains a complex process.
2. Comparing the image in the text of the previous Weather Channel website to the current, one notices a lot of disparities. For instance, the arrangement on the old page seems a lot cleaner and more organized. While the new page employs a solid and effective grid system, it hardly allows for white space for the eye to rest. The arrangement of information from most important to least as the page progresses is a plus, however. The new design allows for more information in the same amount of space, and is still as effective in relaying the weather.
Beyond Words...
s5m32l3 — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 22:441) I believe the judges might have liked the way the content was displayed on the page. It is well organized, clear, and concise. I also think they might have liked the way the pictures are emphasized rather than words. Most people can follow picture instructions, not everyone can read English if the instructions are only in English.
I think the instructions are easily understood. The red arrows are very helpful in guiding the steps. I do believe it would have been better if there were words explaining each picture incase someone could not follow the picture. And if a non-english speaker/reader, can't read it, then they can look at the pictures.
2) The purpose of The Weather Channel website is so anyone can access the weather at anytime. On the website anyone can check their local or outer city weather reports and alerts. Anyone can see videos as you can see when you first open the website. A person on the site can also check temps, traffic conditions, weather for the airport, school closings, weather all around the world, and emergency alerts. It also provides upcoming events (like football games) and what the weather is going to be like for those games.

podarcze — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 23:011. The first thing that comes to mind for why the judges might have liked it, is the very low difficulty to read the directions. Humans tend to learn through pictures or visual clues, and having pictures of what is going on makes it simple. Also, regardless of what language the user may speak, they would still be able to find out how to print based on these directions. No matter what language you speak, a printer will be a printer. Looking at the directions, I do not see anything that could be confusing. Every step has a picture telling you, the reader, exactly what to do. I would find these perfect to put near a printer in any office.
2. The audience of the website could be anyone who is interested in knowing what the weather is. The main 2 groups of people to be a part of this audience are:
a) travelers - These are the people that are looking at the future weather report to know how they should pack for their upcoming trip.
b) people going outside - People that are either on their way to class, or are going out for a walk. This could also include people that work outside. I worked outside this summer and would look at the weather everyday on this website.

Roachel — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 23:371.
The judges for this contest probably liked this document because it is extremely organized. Each step of the basic printing process is labeled neatly and is lined up in order from left to right. Therefore the step by step process is easily recognized by the viewer. I believe the judges also thought the use of symbols and colors made the directions much easier to follow. Several arrows are used to indicate which direction objects should be placed. The arrows are also continuously the color red, which helps them stand out. This drawing also shows a lot of detail. The smaller areas which are harder to see are blow up right next to the original drawing which is necessary to understand what the picture is actually showing the viewer.
I thought the document was very easy to follow. A picture paints a thousand words. It is much easier for me to see a series of pictures and put something together than have to read a document. The colors definitely helped clarify objects. It probably would have been more difficult to understand the directions if the pictures consisted of only black and white. For me, the arrows played a huge role in understanding which direction things were supposed to go. Also the numbering of the pictures help me understand which direction the pictures were to supposed to be followed in.
2.
The weather channel’s audience consists of anyone who lives in the United States and wants to be aware of what type of weather should be expected in certain areas. People who are going on vacation would probably go to weather.com to see a weekly forecast for whatever area they will be vacationing in so they can bring the proper attire. They would also check the weather for traveling conditions. There could be snow delays for flights or construction traffic if they are traveling by car. The typical type of person who checks this site could also just be someone who checks it daily to see if they will need an umbrella or a coat. The audience would also be someone who is driving to work and wants to know if there are any traffic delays. Therefore the audience is strictly anyone concerned with the weather forecast.

Cookz — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 23:59I think the judges probably liked how clean the instructions are, and how to the point they are. The author takes very few steps in explaining the process, which keeps things simple and understandable. The author also makes the pictures very clear, which is a very large help in assisting the reader as to what is going on and what they should be doing. From what I can make out in the pdf, the instructions seem pretty good. I don't think I would have much trouble reading and applying them if I were the one trying to install a printer.
The Weather Channel website serves a very specific purpose, and that is to provide up to date weather information to anyone who needs it. The website will give information about storm cells, winds, temperatures, humidity, pressure, dew point, visibility, and of course it will provide forecasts about what kind of weather conditions are coming up and can be expected anytime in the near future all the way up to 10 days from now.

almost famous — Fri, 09/05/2008 - 00:261. I think the judges really liked this finalist's technical piece because it was easy to follow. It had a minimum number of words in the direction so no matter what language you speak, it would be easy to follow. The pictures are clear and concise, drawn in a chronological order, making a very clear step by step guide. The pictures also have zoomed in areas to help filter the eye to other important details that may otherwise be missed. Overall it fits the needs of the consumer very well.
2. The Weather Channel uses several mediums to reach its audience. The Weather Channel has it's own cable network with 24-7 capabilities. This is how the weather channel first started reaching its audience. The weather channel also has the weather.com website that has current conditions and forecasts for over 77,000 locations worldwide. The Weather Channel can provide weather data to any company's website, personal computer desktops, and/or phone/PDA. The Weather Channel works with several newspapers and radio stations to provide weather information to over 250 radio markets across the United States. The Weather Channel provides customized weather packages to newspapers to allow them the best service possible. Overall, the Weather Channel is reaching many different people in several types of mediums.

RhythmRunneR — Fri, 09/05/2008 - 00:291. The basic printing setup guide was probably a finalist in a technical communication contest because the highly visual design makes it extremely easy to read even if one has poor english. All the images were presented in clear, precise steps, and very little words were used to describe most of the process. Arrangement was cleverly thought out so that one can easily see two initial procedures that end with the same two steps. Magnified sections of the instructions themselves were included to reduce confusion even more. The entire guide is also pleasing to the eye artistically, with all the images being clear and accurate representations of the real-life objects depicted. After viewing the instructions, it took only a few seconds to understand what I was looking at. This is absolutely amazing given I've seen similar instructions written in word that have taken as much as 3 minutes to figure out. Having examined these superior instructions for the length of at most a minute, I am now pumped and ready to do some basic printing, even if I have no clue what printer those instructions were for.
2. Purpose: The weather channel website serves a relatively straightforward purpose: to provide the general public weather information for specific areas around the world. Even the url (weather.com) attempts to make it blatantly obvious what web surfers are getting themselves into upon their arrival. Given this need for weather data, the brilliant minds in weather channel web design have determined several relevant sub-purposes. Assuming many people would like to know weather forecasts for their local area, they have made it a priority to provide quick and easy access to that data. Another important sub-purpose is to provide for the interest in big weather news worldwide, which is why this information has been deemed front-page worthy. Lastly, the weather channel website realizes people can easily get distracted online and have decided helpful life tips should be given; partly because they help fill up space on what otherwise would be an empty main page, but mostly because these tip pages have more advertisements than a corner of times square. (they have to make money somehow you know!) All three sub-purposes help explain the original purpose, and as a result the website does a good job of accomplishing their intended goals.
Beyond Words
PyroJing — Fri, 09/05/2008 - 00:50Well it is hard for me to understand the Basic Printing guide because of the horrible translation to PDF, but overall, the pictures appear to be clear in their intent, it is designed in a way the eyes move quickly in the way it's meant to be read, and there is enough information in the small design for a quick overall-help guide. It would be very easy to follow this guide and learn how to load the paper into this particular printer.
With the Weather Channel website, it is my favorite site to look up weather. The site has expanded to more purposes than just typical weather. The purpose of the site overall is to obtain information on weather conditions anywhere in the world, up to ten days. The site also promotes the newer Weather Channel shows, gives travel help, traffic reports, and much more. The site can give you warnings and information on upcoming disasters, and allows you to see the weather in real-time. The main purpose is to give the most up-to-date weather information for any event, anywhere in an easy to read and detailed manner.

ihatke — Fri, 09/05/2008 - 09:381. What I believe the judges were able to see and appreciated in the set of instructions on page 337 of the reading is the pure simplicity and lack of language required to convey the instructions. Especially considering the text was unreadable for me on the instructions, I do believe that I would be able to follow the directions all the way through. This enables the directions to be used in multiple countries with multiple languages, as well as anyone that may be illiterate. However, I do now know why an illiterate person would be printing anything.
2. The Weather Channel's website is one I always thought to be very busy and packed with ads. With more elderly people getting online, this is one website that could be frequented by such an audience. I think a simplification in the design could go a long way in helping everyone, but especially the elderly looking for weather information online. They already have a name that is known and trusted, they should attempt to be a bit more prepared for their audience.
