Reading response #1

Through reading the textbook, I expect the substance of this course will be about analyzing and writing various documents needed in business worlds such as resume, cover letter, memo, case analysis, and white paper. In more detail, I would expect to practice defining a clear purpose of a document and make the audience understand more clearly and quickly by incorporating various technological resources and thorough analysis.

I particularly expect to be more skilled in writing my resume and cover letter from this course. With the samples given on page 225-227, I will be able to have a better idea about writing them and organizing them in a good format to draw the reader’s eyes quickly.

This book also shows me the systematic procedure to reach highly efficient writing. The book doesn’t mention only several important components a writer have to bear in mind but also how important proper resource research and analysis before undertaking actual writing is important. For example, it explains how to analyze job ad to make one have clearer idea about which skills to mention on one’s resume so to make it fitted and pointed to a specific job position. In cover letter, understanding the contexts of the company’s circumstance will be valuable first step to appeal the company.

Also, by practicing memo and white paper in this class, I expect to feel more comfortable with concise but comprehensive writing. I sometimes be too pointless but lengthy when I write a paper in college, which may reflect that I have a difficulty in finding the aim of and gradual procedure to professional writing. Hopefully, I expect myself with more confidence in professional writing after finishing this course. Since this is on-line class, which means students can always communicate each other by writing anytime, I will be able to be accelerated in writing by reading other student’s comments.

I agree with many of the things that you have pointed out. I also feel that the resume and cover letter will be a signficant part of this course and may also be the most beneficial to most of us. I really liked the samples that were given as well. I thought that page 226-227 were very helpful because it pointed out the mistakes that the other person had made, which to me were not really obvious. It just shows that you must be very careful and particular when you are writing professional documents.

I feel that I also get lengthy and pointless at times when I am writing a paper just to fill the space. I expect to become more effiecient at writing with a purpose and getting to the point. I think that communicating online will also be beneficial because that is something I haven't done before and am not that comfortable with yet.

Words of Thought

First of all, I think it is a great thing that you recognize the opportunity that having free reign of this website to write gives you. By allowing all of us students to participate in open written discussion, we are forced to analyze the ideas we put out before we make them public. I feel sometimes in spoken conversation that the people conversing do not understand the logistics of speaking professionally (which means slang should be avoided!). I hope I am not the only one, but I am definitely enjoying this opportunity, and feel that I can express myself on different level than I would be able to if I was to be simply writing papers (which is the way I thought this class was supposed to be).

All in all, I feel the way you do, and am glad that someone else in the class feels that they will draw a great deal from the electronic medium we are using to convey our thoughts and ideas!

Agree!

First of all, you are not the only one! I am also enjoying this opportunity to "meet" with the class through an electronic medium. I thought this class was going to be: read the book, make a composition, have it looked at, revise it, and turn it in. I think this is a great way to run a course. Not only will I have many peers review my work, I will be reviewing many compositions which could give me better ideas for my work. I have another online course that started about two weeks before this course. It has been the complete opposite of this class. I read the book then take the test online. There is no exchanging of ideas or even names for that matter!

When I saw your comment I was glad others were feeling the same way as I am.

I think that this book could be good for a multitude of tiny things that help you get the job. Reading through this section, I realized that resumes and cover letters and memos and emails would be covered with great importance, but I also saw that they can help you pick the job before you apply for it. Knowing how to analyze a job ad is really important. At the career fair for BCM, there is a book that is passed out with over 150 positions to apply for and knowing how to search effectively for what you want and what you are capable of applying for would have really helped me to narrow my search and use my time more effectively than I have. I also agree with your idea that being an online class will help my writing considerably as most of the class is communicating via blogs with others in this class.

I can definitely relate with preparing a document and going on and on about a something and never really getting to the point. After reading the course description, I felt more comfortable knowing I will receive the knowledge that will make me become a more effective writer, with my fellow peers playing a role in it. Since this is an online course I would think the students taking it would go more into depth in response to everyone’s blogs, giving lengthy, quality feedback versus in a classroom setting. This will be an advantage to everyone, giving the confidence we need to enhance our writing skills.

I hope that we go over how to complete resumes and cover letters but also hope that the class focuses on other ways we may have to use professional writing. I have had two classes now that have gone through resumes and cover letters but nothing else in regards to writing in the professional world. Even when applying for jobs and following up on them you may have to use professional writing. When applying for jobs I do a follow-up call to be sure they have reviewed my resume and if I don’t get in touch and must leave a message I also email them. I would like to be sure that I am doing this in a professional manner.
