After reading this section of The Thomson Handbook, I believe the substance of this course is going to be focused on improving our writing form in many formats. In just Chapter 12, we reviewed six different types of business related formats including resumes, cover letters and memos. We also reviewed several formats that many people may not have heard of, or haven’t needed yet, including case analysis and white papers. After reviewing page 223, I already like how the book is able to lay out specific points on creating a cover letter. I think we will also benefit form the computer formatting pointers such as the tip on page 230. This shows a step by step way to remove a hyperlink. These little tips could be what make your document better than the competition. By using this book, I think we will have good examples and tips to strengthen our resumes and cover letters which we will need as we near graduation and the other formats such as memos and white papers which we will need in the workplace.

By taking this course, I expect to become a better writer in general. I expect to gain useful insight of all aspects of professional writing, which I hope to take to my everyday writing. If I can become good at writing a professional document, which are able to portray information clearly and concisely, I will be able to transfer those skills to my everyday writing. I also expect to have a strong base of classmates and teachers that will be able to offer me constructive criticism on my work. With input, I hope to create a strong resume, cover letter, and have the professional writing skills to succeed in the workplace and benefit me in my accepance of a professional school. I would like to use this opportunity to vastly improve my writing skills so I am ready to move on to the competitive professional world.

This course will make us all better professionals, and as you mention above, the book does lay out clear specific points on how we are to carry out our tasks throughout this whole course. We all want to improve in every aspect throughout our lives, not only professionally, but personally as well. We learn new things everyday and by practicing our writing daily (like the tasks we have to achieve weekly such as commenting, replying, and blog posting) we will improve our skills and be more effective when dealing with the competition. I agree that we all need to learn tips or improve our skills in order to be better than the rest (since our teacher stated in his blog that we will face people who are better than us) since we all want to achieve the goal of becoming successfull in the professional world.

I think that with the tips in this book, we can be those people who are better than the rest. We may not be the people at the top as there is always those few who are more qualified than you are. This can put us ahead of the majority of other competition and we can be the ones who get the great jobs instead of those that are average or beneath our capabilities. Learning to put together a resume, cover letter, email, memo, or even instant messages can make us look more like those who have been professionals for longer than we have been alive. I look forward to seeing myself and others progress throughout this course.

By Reading the above blog post, I realized that many of us are looking to learn similar things from the course. I agree with you that all of us need to perfect our writing and communication skills. This is the essential part of the course. I also like the idea of using the criticism by our fellow mates and teachers to improve our writing. I believe only by making mistakes and correcting them, one becomes perfect. I hope to improve my writing skills in the same way. With the help of peer review and the instructor’s comments, I will make every assignment better day by day. So in this way, by the end of the course, I shall be able to build a perfect resume and a cover letter.
