English 420Y - Business Writing Online

Writing plays a critical role in our everyday life. If writing didn’t exist our means of communication would suffer. After completing the first reading I expect this course to address the different means and ways of communication that are most commonly used in the work place. I find the idea that this class is an online class and based on professional writing very interesting. Professional writing seems to be changing from mailed letters to emails. Emails and daily postings are how the class is structured which will allow all of us to strengthen our communication skills to suit the popular trend of emails. I am the type of person that likes formats laid out word for word. This class will allow me to get better at using guidelines and completing the task at hand using my creativity. The TH stated the importance of considering the nature of the rhetorical situation. I never really thought about how much this varies from situation to situation and that not all professional writing can be laid out in a word for word format. TH also described how using technology and applying it to accomplish the rhetorical task is critical in order for anyone to have success as a writer. Success lies in the eyes of the beholder and I look at the previous statement from TH as by not using all of the items and resources we have at hand we will not become successful writers. The book then goes into detail about how knowing your self and your own talents has an effect on how you portray yourself to others. This first Employment project makes sense after reading this chapter in the TH. Through doing this project we should all learn a little more about ourselves which will change how we portray ourselves to others. The activities will require me to sit and think through those questions I have put off on answering in the past. The websites that are listed in the book have proved to be very helpful and will hopefully be helpful in the future as well. The checklists will be a tool used to make sure that I am including and thinking of everything that an employer will want when looking through applicants.
