Reading Response - Week 1

Based upon the reading from The Thomson Handbook, I believe that this course will be very beneficial to me in the present and in the future. Working with resumes and cover letters will help me obtain my dream career as well as internships over the next few summers. I also expect to learn more about professional writing documents such as the memo, the case analysis, and the white paper mentioned in pages 232-236 in The Thomson Handbook. I also anticipate this course to be very challenging in certain aspects because I am not familiar with the professional writing documents like the white papers. The only personal experiences I’ve had with professional documents are resumes and cover letters.

In the first few weeks of this course, I expect to have my current resume critiqued by my fellow students as well as the instructors. I’ve never had my resume critiqued before and I think the feedback will be extremely valuable to me and my goal of obtaining an internship next summer. I’ve already noticed changes that I should make to my current resume from the resume checklist on pages 228-229 of The Thomson Handbook. Besides improving my resume, I also learned a great deal about writing cover letters. After reading page 226, I realize the importance of writing a cover letter and a resume specific to each position that you apply. I also discovered that on page 229 different types of font are best to grab the audience’s attention when reading a resume.

This course is the perfect medium for business writing. We will be able to read each other’s work and receive feedback. I look forward to receiving feedback from others in my major as well as different majors. I will use their feedback and The Thomson Handbook as a guide to perfect my resume and cover letter as well as other business documents in my future.

Cover letters

I did not think cover letters were very important either but after reading the example i realized that it does make quite an impression on an employer. It was the same with memos. I did not know that there was this kind of a format to a memo. I am already trying to implement it in my current internship. I also think that getting our resumes critiqued by each other will help us become more aware of our writing styles as well as other peoples writing styles.

RE: Reading Response - Week 1

We actually won't get to do a full white paper. In the regular semesters we do, but in the summer the time is too compressed. We will be doing a case study in the second project, however.

Resume critique

I also believe that the resume critique will be very interesting. I've always had my resumes critiqued by teachers but I would like to know what my peers thought as well.

Letter

When i was in high school, I was always told the importance of cover letters. How they help make your resume stand out and such, but in recent years I have heard differently. Especially when in college and a lot of your job searching is done at career fairs, cover letters are a waist ot time. they won't be read. I can, however, understnad the benefit of a cover letter if you were seaking a job and not the employers were not seeking you for the job. They can really help you out. I liked how in the book they take you through the process, step-by-step. It makes the whole idea of having to write all these documents less intimidating. Good thing too, because they are intimidating enough as is.
