I think that this course will provide a good base for learning professional writing styles. Up until now I have not had educational practice with this. Most of the writing I have done for class has been for different purposes. Since I have not had much practice I assume that there could be some things I could do to improve. Business writing is made up of many different aspects from the beginning of just getting in the door with a cover letter and resume, and then composing memos, email and other documents. It will be great to be to quickly identify rhetorical situations to communicate better. I hope to learn from mistakes throughout the course so that I am better equipped to communicate in a professional environment. I think this is great because it is a no pressure situation in the sense that we are all working together to gain the skill of professional writing. Make mistakes will provide good learning points and not cost anyone their job. I feel as though I have a pretty strong grasp of technology but I am also hoping that since this is a technology type class I will become more comfortable with it and be able to apply it to different tasks. The book already offered some insightful things about the job hunt, cover letters and resumes that I hope with our first project I will be able to put to use. I have also already learned new documents in business that I have not known such as white papers. This will be great for me because I am working this summer in a professional environment. I hope to be able to gain feedback from both people in the course as well as people in the work place. It will be interesting to ask people at work what the think of certain ideas, or styles that I may learn in this class. It will also be important to categorize your audience and understand how your business approaches communication.

Learning From Your Mistakes

I wanted to touch on the topic of learning from your mistakes. In the business world, you are never told when you make a mistake. The only thing you have to go off of is whether or not you got the job. I think that this class will provide us with the great opportunity of learning from our mistakes. In fact, I think that this is the best way to learn. I know that whenever I make a mistake, I usually do not forget about it and therefore do not repeat it. I plan on using this class as grounds to test my ideas and get feedback on them so that when I go to apply for a real job, I will already have all the kinks worked out.

Your theory is one that I practice daily. Making mistakes is a natural part of life. I often use the saying that what defines you as a person is not what knocked you down, but how you respond when you are down. The strongest and wisest people are those that learn and grow from their mistakes. Since we are all human I know we make many mistakes in a days time. I had not thought about looking at this class in that manner. I will try to approach it with more of an openminded attitude and learn from the mistakes that I make. Thank you for the insight and your honest post!

I am glad you guys found my blog insightful. It is hard for many people to get up from a mistake and rebound well. Sometimes how well you perform after a mistake is what really matters. This can and should be applied to many aspects of life, it is important to not over look this in your communication both verbal and non verbal. Also, I suggest learning from those around you and picking up on their skills. I look forward to people looking at my projects and giving their inputs so that it can better prepare me for when it really counts.

Mistakes, Good or bad?

Mistakes are part of life. Everyone makes them. However, the kicker is if a person is intelligent enough to learn from them. After you make a mistake, review the mistake, and then do it again, you have failed. If you make a mistake, review what you did, and allow yourself to make the necessary changes so that it doesnt happen again, progress has been made. One thing that I do not have respect for are companies that send you the "Im sorry but you didnt get the job" letter. I would have so much more respect for a company that would take the time and make a phone call and even tell you exactly why you didnt get the job, rather then getting a pre-written, universal letter that says good luck with your future endeavors. If applicants would get a phone call and get feedback, a lesson can be learned and they can hopefully benefit from it.

I also agree that this class will provide a lot of useful knowledge on professional writing. My previous classes have asked me to write and analyze literature. That type of writing is great but I probably won’t be analyzing books for my job. I look forward to improving my professional writing through this course. I am happy that I will gain exposure to writing many types of documents that will help me in my future career. I also like that I will be able to gain practice in this course without having a lot of pressure. A mistake here might cost a few points but in the real world it could cost a job. I think this course will be a valuable learning experience that will have an impact on the rest of our lives.

useful

I agree that this course should be very useful. In any other English course that I have taken they have not touched upon any writing that I would actually do when I was done with school so I lost interest. I think that it is great that there is a writing course tailored specifically towards what I will be doing when I graduate. Since writing is one of my weaknesses I have always been self consciences about how it would affect my job. I wondered if people would notice how bad I was at writing and if that would affect my career. I really think that this course will help me conquers some of those doubts.
