I think that this course will provide a good base for learning professional writing styles. Up until now I have not had educational practice with this. Most of the writing I have done for class has been for different purposes. Since I have not had much practice I assume that there could be some things I could do to improve. Business writing is made up of many different aspects from the beginning of just getting in the door with a cover letter and resume, and then composing memos, email and other documents. It will be great to be to quickly identify rhetorical situations to communicate better.
I hope to learn from mistakes throughout the course so that I am better equipped to communicate in a professional environment. I think this is great because it is a no pressure situation in the sense that we are all working together to gain the skill of professional writing. Make mistakes will provide good learning points and not cost anyone their job. I feel as though I have a pretty strong grasp of technology but I am also hoping that since this is a technology type class I will become more comfortable with it and be able to apply it to different tasks. The book already offered some insightful things about the job hunt, cover letters and resumes that I hope with our first project I will be able to put to use. I have also already learned new documents in business that I have not known such as white papers.
This will be great for me because I am working this summer in a professional environment. I hope to be able to gain feedback from both people in the course as well as people in the work place. It will be interesting to ask people at work what the think of certain ideas, or styles that I may learn in this class. It will also be important to categorize your audience and understand how your business approaches communication.

Learning From Your Mistakes

Mistakes, Good or bad?
Mistakes are part of life. Everyone makes them. However, the kicker is if a person is intelligent enough to learn from them. After you make a mistake, review the mistake, and then do it again, you have failed. If you make a mistake, review what you did, and allow yourself to make the necessary changes so that it doesnt happen again, progress has been made. One thing that I do not have respect for are companies that send you the "Im sorry but you didnt get the job" letter. I would have so much more respect for a company that would take the time and make a phone call and even tell you exactly why you didnt get the job, rather then getting a pre-written, universal letter that says good luck with your future endeavors. If applicants would get a phone call and get feedback, a lesson can be learned and they can hopefully benefit from it.
