Reading Response Week 1

I think the content covered in the text is very important for effective professional writing. As future employees for various companies, we should all be very comfortable with the material. It is important that we are not only familiar with the text , but we should be very comfortable in applying the knowledge we gain from the text and I think that can be obtained from a lot of practice and also effective feedback and critique. The glossary of web terms and usage provides a comprehensive list of words and phrases that all of us use on a daily basis but a lot of times the context we use them in changes the complete meaning of what we try to say. I think we should all pay special attention to the words and phrases and get ourselves extremely comfortable with their usage in order to become an effective professional writer. I totally agree to the importance given to understand one’s audience in this weeks reading assignment. I think your audience’s perception is critical to how the message is conveyed so one should always pay special attention to the needs and values of their audience in order to get the right message across. The section on writing an effective cover letter and resume actually can be pretty useful but after having my resume critiqued by numerous career advisors and recruiters form different companies; I believe that there is no such thing as a perfect resume. The point of a resume is basically landing interviews and personally, I think one should go with whatever works the best for them i.e. which ever one lands you the most interviews. You don’t necessarily have to always edit you resumes’ formatting all the time. I think it is a good idea to have you resume in a plain text file since most of the companies these days do have a section where you can paste the plain text. It saves both us and the companies the time to deal with formatting issues. It also helps us to get the recruiters to see things exactly how we want them to see.

I agree that it is extremely important (not only in writing) to be comfortable with applying the knowledge you have gained throughout either college or your own life experiences. As mentioned above, the best way to achieve this is with practice and feedback, since it is very hard for us to realize our own mistakes. We need to know what we are doing wrong in order to improve, since it is hard to improve a weakness if we never realize what it really is. I also agree that the audience is extremely important in this matter, since when we communicate either in a written or vocal manner, we all want them to perceive the righ message. Some people have trouble communicating through writing (such as myself) while can get the message much more efficiently if it is through a verbal manner. Communicating to your audience is extremly important for our professional lives. About the resumes, it is hard to state what a perfect resume is. I don't think one should worry much about perfectioning your resume, rather just be honest and fill it up with everything you have done and achieved throughout your life. I also agree when you say that it is a good idea to have the resume in plain text, it saves us a lot of time, trouble, and stress.

I agree with your on the idea of having a copy of your resume in a plain text file; however, I don't think the formatting should be completely overlooked. I understand that many companies have sections to paste the text, but recruiters are still going to look through the text just as quickly. I think it is important that your resume stands out more than others. Just a little formatting couldn't hurt!

Formatting

I was actually referring to an input section on a lot of company's career website which just takes text as input. If you paste your resume with any formatting in , the text automatically reorganizes and there are chances that it doesnt appear the way you want the employer to see it. I definitely agree that your one page resume or word file(*.doc) should always have some formatting so tha it stands out. I was earlier referring to the profile section on different career websites which only accepts plan text and does not allow for any formatting.
