I think the content covered in the text is very important for effective professional writing. As future employees for various companies, we should all be very comfortable with the material. It is important that we are not only familiar with the text , but we should be very comfortable in applying the knowledge we gain from the text and I think that can be obtained from a lot of practice and also effective feedback and critique. The glossary of web terms and usage provides a comprehensive list of words and phrases that all of us use on a daily basis but a lot of times the context we use them in changes the complete meaning of what we try to say. I think we should all pay special attention to the words and phrases and get ourselves extremely comfortable with their usage in order to become an effective professional writer.
I totally agree to the importance given to understand one’s audience in this weeks reading assignment. I think your audience’s perception is critical to how the message is conveyed so one should always pay special attention to the needs and values of their audience in order to get the right message across. The section on writing an effective cover letter and resume actually can be pretty useful but after having my resume critiqued by numerous career advisors and recruiters form different companies; I believe that there is no such thing as a perfect resume. The point of a resume is basically landing interviews and personally, I think one should go with whatever works the best for them i.e. which ever one lands you the most interviews. You don’t necessarily have to always edit you resumes’ formatting all the time. I think it is a good idea to have you resume in a plain text file since most of the companies these days do have a section where you can paste the plain text. It saves both us and the companies the time to deal with formatting issues. It also helps us to get the recruiters to see things exactly how we want them to see.
