Writing for Business and the Workplace

After reading the section “Writing for business and the workplace” on the Thomson Handbook, I found four points to be of great importance: First, the Role of Technology in Business, second, Effective Cover Letters and Resumes third, Effective Memos and finally, Effective Case Analysis. In today’s global environment communicating via e-mails, instant messaging among many other forms is increasingly becoming common. Having the proper skills to effectively and properly communicate is important in the professional world, especially for an individual like me who will be working in a multinational company and will have to communicate with people around the world, so learning the proper methods of communication is of great importance to me. Look for a professional job is something that hopefully all of those in college will at some point or another end up doing. Having a resume and cover letter that calls employers attention and highlights your skills and qualifications can be a challenge, with thousands of resumes out there. Learning to effectively convey your skills and ideas will provide you that link to the interview for that perfect job, that of course after also having some work experience, good grades and leadership involvement. Just because one can express its ideas on a resume and cover letter does not mean miracles happen if you have done nothing but partying in college. Memos is something I did not think would be of great use, especially now with emails. Yet, I was proved wrong after my two internship at Deloitte and Touche were I had to write to memo’s and has no idea how to do so. Today, I wish I would have taken this class earlier in my career path to guide myself in the proper way of writing a memo. Finally there are those infamous case analyses that all of us probably have done in one of our courses. Correctly targeting the key points in the cases and expressing the ideas clearly and precisely is usually a strategic thing in case analysis. Even though I was not exposed to case analyses in the professional environment I do know that many companies are now utilizing them in the recruiting process and I am sure that perhaps I will come pass one in real work.

I agree with you on the four points of great importance. I don't know if you were listing them from most important to least, but if you were I would effective cover letters and resumes before the role of technology in business. I say this because I feel that more people in our generation have a better understanding of technology then they do of writing cover letters and resumes. I also agree that just because you have a great resume doesn't necessarily mean that you are going to get the job. You also obviously have to have a good interview and have the necessary skills to potentially land the job.

I liked your choices for the most important points from the reading. Technology will continue to improve, and as you pointed out the ability to communicate globally will be essential. Resumes and cover letters are obviously critical, and I think this class will help us create resumes that catch the eye of potential employers. I definitely agree with your comments about memos. I have little to no experience with them, so I am not sure about their importance. Although since they are covered in this class I am sure they have some merit in the professional world. Unfortunately I have no previous experience with case analyses, so I look forward to learning their usefulness.

I agree that the role of technology in business, effective cover letters and resumes, effective memos, and effective case analysis have a significant importance in our future. Especially, like you said, that we are becoming a more global society as e-mails and instant messaging become increasingly more common. This makes it even more important to learn the proper way of writing professionally since we now have access to more and more employers around the world. Knowing how to communicate with them will dramatically help us not only as we begin to search for a job, but even after we have begun our careers.
