Reading Response

Reading Thomson Handbook was very helpful to realize the benefits we can get from this course. Both web and usage glossaries had many words that, although I’m sure for many people are normal, they seem less common for me having learned English as a second language. I expect to get from this course the fundamental rules, which might not be obvious sometimes, that would lead to professional and elegant writing. Learning about specific documents starting by the resume and cover letter as we already covered in Chapter 12, revising grammar and punctuating rules among others will help improve my writing skills.

English is also my second language, so I totally agree with you that we will be able to get a lot from this course. I have also read through the glossary and also agree that there are some words that are less common for me. Basically before transferring to Purdue a year and a half ago I did not get any practice writing in English after leaving high school in 2002. I did take the ENGL 106 class, but for international students, which does not have a challenging level such as the normal ENGL 106 class. It will seem easier for our other classmates (who have spoken and written english through all their lifetime) to write and participate in this course, but I feel that there is nothing like a challenge that will motivate you to improve your own skills. Like you, I also look forward to learn about specific documents such as the resume and cover letters as well as revising grammar and punctuating rules.

I think that this course should help all of us with our writing skills. I know how ENGL 106 was, and I know that it really was not too challanging at all. Seeing how english is your second language, you may feel that you will be at a disadvantage, but I'm sure the class will help out in that department. The course is not particularly designed to target things like punctuation and other grammatical tools, but I think that with writing these documents, all those things may fall into place. I am personally hoping for this myself too. I want to ascertain that my grammar and writing is up to par as well.

I think this course will be fairly easy as long as you keep up with the daily tasks. I have taken two other English courses that have been really easy! English is my first language and I still find myself not knowing what’s going on so don’t worry! I hope to improve my grammar and punctuation as well and hope that our peer reviews will help guide us through those. I look forward to learning more about how to write in the professional world. If you need any help at all feel free to send me an email and I would love to help you out!

I agree that this course will improve my overall writing skills. I haven't taken an English course in a while and I could greatly benefit from reviewing the fundamental rules. I have written remuses and cover letters in previous classes, but they only covered the basics. This class seems to go more in depth, which will make the process easier and the quality better. English is my first language, but I can relate to your comment about the glossary terms being unfamiliar. Hopefully learning those words will increase my ability to write more professionally.
