Job Ad Analysis

The position I have chosen is:SCHOOL AGE CHILD CARE DIRECTOR for the YMCA of Eastern Union County in Elizabeth, NJ.

The link is as follows: http://www.ymca.net/national_vacancy_list/?key=10729&city=&state=&title=...

This position is my ideal starting job. The position is essentially a supervisor that overseas different child care programs through the YMCA. The two main programs that I would oversee are school aged childcare programs and day camp programs. This position includes multitasking, mentoring, hiring, and faciliating communication and supervision of staff and children. It is a wide range of responsibilities, but I like a varied job, not one that I do the same thing everyday. A large emphasis for this position is communication and teamwork since the position reports to a senior director. I really enjoy teamwork atmospheres in the career setting.

I meet all the requirement for this position. I will attain a BS degree and have over three years of experience working with children. I have even had training on child abuse and neglect. I choose this position mainly because I love working with children. More specifically,I chose the YMCA because it a sutible non-profit organization for me to work. I really would like to choose a career path that is rewarding and I could not think of a better place to work than a Community Christian centered place with strong values. The company has all the same values that I have in terms of religion, respect, responsibility, etc. The position also emphasizes teamwork, which I am gaining a lot of experience with working with my internship presently. The description of the person fits my personality completely.
I have worked for the YMCA for two years as a day camp counselor (support staff). I loved that position, and really began to understand the management of child care programs. While working at the camp I had lots of ideas and was able to impliment them. I was able to communicate daily with parents and resolve conflicts with both children and staff while still maintaining Y values. I have lots of different types of experiences working with children. I was a lifeguard for three years in which I assisted swimming lessons. In addition, I was a day camp counselor for two years, plus I worked with Indiana Head Start program to give out gifts at Christmas. I worked with 3rd graders at Purdue's Gifted Education Programs in chemistry. Everyone might have lots of experience, but it is the lessons I have learned in those experiences and my willingness to keep learning and growing that separates me from others.

Working with kids

This sounds like it would be a really fun job and also rewarding. I also like working with kids and it feels really good knowing your are making a difference in their lives. At the tennis camp I worked at the children ranged from about 7-18 so it was difficult in times when you had to deal with children who can be 10 years apart in some cases. I think you might have some similar situations at this job and it's difficult sometimes but overall I think this job would be very exciting and is a really good choice. Good luck in finding a job this good when you graduate.

Re: Working with kids

I have actually already come into that predicament with the YMCA day camp position. I had children ranging from 5-12 and although that is not quite the range you had, I could already see that a problem existed. What we did was split the camp essentially into two camps. Five, six, and seven year olds were one camp, and the eight, nine, and up were another. It worked really well and was pretty successful. I am excited about applying for jobs. I just hope I can find one that wants me!
