The position I chose to apply for is an Assistant Groundskeeper for the Lake Elsinore Storm Baseball team. They are the Minor League Baseball affiliate for the San Diego Padres. The responsibilities of the job are divided into four categories, baseball field maintenance, turf maintenance, outside landscape maintenance and crew supervision. The responsibilities of baseball maintenance include: mound and home plate repair, bullpen repair, skin work and batting practice set up/ tear down. Turf maintenance duties are as follows: mowing, edging, fertilization application , irrigation, verticutting, sodding and over seeding. Outside landscape responsibilities are turf maintenance, trimming, and irrigation. Finally the assistant groundskeeper will have day to day crew supervision of full time and seasonal employees.
I chose this position because it allows me to use skills learned in the classroom and those I have already developed. I ultimately want to become a Head Groundskeeper in a Major League park and this would be a good opportunity to gain experience. The Head Groundskeepers I have spoken with explain that moving up in this industry is similar to baseball players advancing on to the big leagues. A person has to prove themselves before they can move to a higher level. Also I have never worked outside of Indiana, and I would like to see how other ball parks care for their fields.
I feel that I am qualified for this position because I have performed all the responsibilities required first hand. Considering my prior experience, along with the knowledge gained from my major, I would be able to fulfill the expectations of the job. Most importantly one of the requirements of the job is to supervise and manage the grounds crew. I have been fortunate to be able to do this in previous jobs, and this is a skill that can't necessary be taught in a class. The main point is, I would love this type of position and therefore would work extremely hard to excel at it.
