Reading response week 5

The brochure I found online is below.

I liked this brochure because I became interested as I looked at the first page of this brochure. The brochure used a proper contrast of script letter and a picture to draw reader's eyes quickly on the first page. Above all, I would like to say that this brochure used pictures of nature very effectively. The pictures of nature and gardening used in this brochure kept the mood being very fresh. As mentioned on page 573 of the textbook, the author of this brochure created the proximity between the title and subtitle and between the authors and its logo by placing them separately.

The sentences in the brochure were short and informative. The bolds, italics, and bullet points were used properly to emphasize some parts. The brochure explained how to manage one’s yard effectively by dividing it into 5 steps. As mentioned in the text, the brochure included several titles with numbers prefixed. The font size of the titles were large enough to make a reader feel comfortable with reading it. By including subtitles, the author summarized the key point of each content. Again, since this brochure was about how to make a Green Scape, the green and brown color were mostly used. I thought these colors emphasized nature effectively. The text was left-justified with proper leading. To make the content more practical and catch a reader’s eyes more effectively, the author used some casual style of sentences, such as “Honey, I shrunk the lawn!”.

I thought this brochure would be helpful when our group is making our own one. Although we will need some more creativity on our own, we will be able to get a good idea about using proper fonts, colors, pictures, and alignment of contents from this brochure.

I also liked this brochure. I think it did a nice job of taking a task that could be somewhat complicated and breaking it up into much smaller and easier steps. This is key because the reader will actually consider following the instructions then. Each step is clearly labeled at the top of its own page and further broken down by headers which are written in a different color, size, and style. I also liked how this brochure repeated its five steps at the end and also had the “Four R’s.” Also, the pictures add appeal to the reader. They all show the great results of following the steps and always show people being happy and not showing any hard work involved. I think this is a great reference when started to create brochures on our own.

I agree that this is a great example of a brochure. Like you, I really liked the pictures. The color scheme worked really well, especially for the topic. The idea of proximity was definitely present. The different types of text really helped make the information easier to read. I could see using a style like this, especially for the how to care for your pet brochure. This brochure talks about how to care for your lawn. We have to write one about pets. Maybe we could use some of the same concepts of alignment and text to help create an easy to read brochure for our information.

Your description of the brochure is very good. You noticed things about it that I did not when I first looked at it. I didn't look at the justification of the text, but you commented on that and how it effected the overall layout of the brochure. You did a much better job then I did at analyzing the different aspects of the brochure. I also liked how you mention how the color is directly related to the topic. I wonder why colors we will use in our brochure. The obvious choice would be to use green and red because we are talking about Christmas. This is something that I had not considered yet. I had thought about finding a good color scheme for the brochure, but I had not yet considered how the colors should relate to the topic. I'm glad that you commented about this so that it could be something that I consider.

This one of the best brochures I have seen so far. I mean every aspect of the brochure is perfect. The font type as well as font size is good; one can read as well follow it very easily. The Images used are self describing the text. The whole brochure seems so attractive as well as soothing to the eye. It follows the concept of nature and agriculture so well. It would be great if we can try and make something similar for the ' Caring for pets ' brochure. I think learning the use of text, font and Images from this brochure is very important for our group.

I agree with your analysis of this brochure. I think the uses of pictures at the beginning of the brochure are able to effectively draw the audience’s attention quickly. I like how you brought up the titles and main thoughts were short and informative. By staying concise in the writings, the author is able to convey the meaning of each section effectively. I also thought by changing the font size and color of the subtitles was a very good way to show new ideas. Even with I scroll quickly down the pages, I can see where the new sections begin.

The green scape that you chose was a good choice. This brochure made a great use of pictures and descriptions. The first thing that was eye appealing to me, was the question and answer of what is green scape. This helped me as a reader because I it answered my first question on the first page. Beyond the first page, I especially like how they use pictures with a nice font to keep the reader tuned in to their brochure. I feel that this brochure is professionally written and would be a great example to follow for your service learning project.

I also chose this brochure and noticed many of the same things that you did. I also noticed the use of contrast on the first and second pages between the text and the background pictures. I thought the white text really made the title stand out. One thing I didn't notice that you pointed out was the proximity between the title and subtitle and the author and logo. I do remember reading about ways to separate the text effectively, but I didn't even notice it when I was originally looking at it. I agree with what you said about this brochure being useful to our group. I think the use of pictures will really help us.
