The brochure I chose is a vacation showcase for 2006-2007 provided by Sunny Land Tours. It entails special travels deals and uses an array of pictures advertising the destinations. The design of this brochure drew me in because of all the color and pictures advertised. Elements that work in the design in my chosen brochure were the closeness of the wording in proximity to the images, which enhanced the visual display of the brochure. Secondly, the alignment of the design helped create a relationship between the information and visual images of the various vacation spots. A quote that stood out in chapter 25 was, "People often judge books by their covers". When researching to find a professional brochure, I was often judging the brochure by its cover. The design of the brochure cover entices the reader to further investigate the information within the pages. The graphic design is visually appealing and the textural content works in harmony to convey a desired effect. To approach design properly, principles of proximity, alignment, repetition, and contrasts must be carefully laid out. Putting the words, color, and pictures arranged in a good spacial pattern makes the brochure very appealing. Although, the brochure I chose has lengthy writing, I feel that it is very informative and draws interest.
Topics from chapter 25 have impacted me to design a brochure that follows the principles of alignment, proximity, repetition, and contrast. These methods are important in designing a brochure because they convey the ideas and communicate information effectively. Another important aspect to take into consideration when developing a brochure is to use topography effectively. It is a design principle that unifies the theme and style. Its attributes are font, type face and point size. Lastly, the use of color increases the interest in the visual graphics and enhances the key points or features on the brochure. Brochures are a way to encourage people to try new ways of expressing themselves in a creative way, that will interest people to read and value the material. "Images in a brochure can communicate information, express ideas and moods, and persuade an audience."

You noted that Sunny Land tours had many pictures and that should benefit them tremendously. I couldn't open the link but I could only imagine the colors of the images that involve the tours. I think it is very important to view just what the tour has to offer, and through colorful images they should gain attention of the readers. I also agree with you on how the spatial pattern can appeal to the eye, a neatly aligned brochure can make a difference. I also think topography will definitely benefit you if you incorporate it into your brochure. Good Luck!

I like the quote that you reference from chapter 25, “People often judge books by their cover.” No matter how many librarians that have told me not to judge a book by its cover, you can’t help but make judgments on visual representation alone. The design of a brochure or any publication is a key element in its overall effectiveness. The design must be able to catch the viewer’s eye and draw them to read the publication itself. If a brochure is unable to catch the viewer’s eye then it doesn’t matter how well your copy is written or the quality of pictures inside.
RE: Reading Response 5
I like the fact that you broached the topic of making a judgement based upon what the front of the brochure looks like. I decided that in analyzing my own brochure, I would pick one without looking at it first, so that I was unbiased and did not pick one solely because it had pretty pictures on the front. In the situation we are in in this project, however, it is a reality that people are going to judge the brochures we produce by what is on the cover before they ever read the content. It is up to us to figure out the best way to keep the readr interested in the information we are trying to get across. I think you are going in a very positive direction with your ideas, and you will most likely contribute tremendously to your team. Good Luck!

I agree with you that the front of the brochure needs to catch the reader's eye. I think that after doing my own brochure, I would hope that the readers would take the time to look through the brochure front to back and not just look at the cover and decided that did not want to continue. But I must also admit that I have been known to look at the cover then put it back if I don't feel the cover is sufficient. I have realized that the cover means nothing, until you read the inside. I hope that after creating the brochure our readers will read our brochure front to back. I hope you all have fun doing the group project.

I really liked your analysis of this brochure. I agree that the use of colors and pictures are going to be very important when creating our own brochures. I also liked that you pointed out the quote from chapter 25 about how most people do judge books by their covers. Even though we are constantly reminded that it's not a good idea to do that, we know that most people do. With that it mind, the visual design is going to be one of the most important parts of the brochure. I think you have a very good grasp on how to make your brochure catch the reader's attention and make them want to read more.
