Reading Response Week 5

The brochure I found was put out by the American Red Cross Organization and it talks about family contingency plans in case of various natural disasters. This is a very informative brochure and is organized in a very logical way. It starts by creating awareness about disasters and portrays through images the places the natural disasters can occur. The brochure then moves onto steps required to ensure family safety, methods of loss and damage prevention and then provides a to-do list in case a disaster does occur. The brochure can be found at: http://www.redcross.org/static/file_cont36_lang0_23.pdf

This brochure in particular follows most of the guidelines on effective graphic design provided in Chapter 25 of the text. The visuals or graphics really work in harmony with the text in creating the desired effect and conveying the desired message. Relevant sections are organized in very effective proximity of the main topics and help the reader to relate the images to the text. The alignment of the text is consistent throughout the brochure. The visual theme and images follow a consistent pattern and are easy to follow along. The element of repetition stresses the importance of disaster prevention and preparation very effectively. The use of red and blue colors through out the brochure for important bullet point catches the eye and intrigues readers’ curiosity to find out more information and read further.

I think this specific brochure is designed very well. Not only does this brochure follow the proper guidelines but it also creates relatedness amongst the readers. Just skipping over the pages makes the reader at least feel the purpose of the brochure as everyone could relate to it in more than one way. I think this brochure sets a very good example for the group project. I would strongly recommend my group to follow the guidelines used in this brochure and try to create the positive and purposeful effect that it creates.

I liked the brochure you picked, it was simple, to-the-point and easy to understand. Its large writing and effective picture use actually makes you want to read the whole thing. I especially liked the family disaster plan cut out and the practice and maintain your plan section. I think having cut outs like this in a brochure makes it more appealing because it can actually be used.
Also I think the information given is so easy to do and so applicable that most people would actually take the time to do what the brochure says. I agree that guidelines from the brochure can be used by groups for their project!

Brochure

I like the brochure that you chose. First of all it is a very informative brochure, but it does not bore the reader to death. It is a easy to follow easy read brochure that any one who wants to educate themselves on disasters that could happen at home could read. Referencing chapter twenty-five, it stays true with the graphic design guidelines. The font and font size are appropriate. The size is good and the font is not too fancy to read. Also the colors have a nice contrast. This makes it much easier on the reader to decipher what is actually on the brochure.

I thought the information on this brochure was obviously very helpful and well organized which made it easy to understand. I like how they used the checklists so that you could make sure that you did each of the steps. The bulleted information was good because it helped split things up. I liked how they used different font sizes and colors to divide sections and titles. I felt that the brochure was consistent and it made it flow well and seem like everything belonged their. They used repletion with their logo which was mentioned in chapter 25. One thing I did not really care for were the pictures that they had. I thought that they could have used better graphics to make the brochure a little more attractive and to relate with the topic better.

The brochure you picked demonstrated the principals of chapter 25 very well. The text is sized properly so it can be viewed clearly even at a slight distance. It uses simple language and gets across the message with the target audience in mind. The brochure also uses graphics and colors well to support the text. Although most of the brochure is written in black the important parts are done in red to bring your attention to them. The brochure also uses the color blue to help put a break between things and organize the document. I think you would be wise to take some of the ideas from this brochure and use them in your group project.

RE: Reading Response Week 5

I actually chose to analyze the same brochure that you did. I agree that it follows very cookie cutter guidelines, and that the writer organized it in such a way that it makes it simple to reand and to follow. The use of color in this brochure was a significant point. Color is used to make some items stand out above the others, like the text in the yellow boxes and the red headings. I do think this brochure is a decent example of a template groups could follow for this project, however, I thought it was a little bit too bland. It would have been nice to see more than just one real picture instead of cartoon drawings of what disasters might occur. I think you will use the information you recieved from this assignment wisely, and I look forward to reading your group's brochure!

This brochure contained material that was quickly summed up and easy to read. The layout works well for presenting the information. I think breaking the material into four easy steps for safety was effective in allowing the reader to actually follow a plan. Also, the points under each step are short and to the point. They are also easy to read because they are nicely spaced out and each one is bulleted. I think that this brochure contains a lot of useful strategies that we can include in our own group project. Using colors the way this brochure did can really emphasize different points. Also, bulleted items that are concisely written are important for our project.

I liked how the brochure you picked was not a typical tri-fold design. It was good to see something different. This brochure, however, is different from the ones we have to make in that ours have less information to include. You mentioned the consistent color scheme and layout of the brochure. This is true. I also liked how the bold numbers easily separate the different sections. It makes the text very clear and easy to understand. One thing that I think this brochure does not do well, that you should consider when making yours, is that there aren't photographs. The black and white sketches don't draw in your attention the same way that photographs would. I think you should consider using pictures when making your brochure.

I liked the brochure you found. It followed all the principles mentioned in chapter 25. It contained proper images to draw reader’s eyes and intrigue the reader. The font size was big enough to make itself easily readable. Specifically, I liked how it used red and blue color. As mentioned on page 580 of the textbook, red and blue are complementary colors, which contrast very well. The red bullet points convoked my attention effectively while making myself feel that those were serious and important information. I also liked the font style used in blue subtitles. The first capital letter of each word was a little bit exaggerated creating more interesting atmosphere. I thought this brochure reflected all the principles given in the text very well.

Visuals really do need to work well with the text to create the desired effect and covey the right message.
