Reading Response #6

There are a lot of elements that I have incorporated in my design draft. Coming up with a unique design for a brochure was easier said than done simply because of the distinct functions they serve. Whether it is for visual interpretation, aesthetic appeal, or representing data, they all had their own complex meaning which brought the entire brochure together.

I managed to include the principle of variety through the use of color schemes, shapes, and pictures. Graphic design is apparent with the various shapes and sizes I used overlapping one another throughout the whole brochure. This serves as aesthetic appeal and develops a friendly tone for the general layout. The pictures of the cats and dogs I incorporated served the purpose of merely drawing attention of the reader and directing them from the beginning to the end. I had the dog on the front cover looking up at our slogan because it serves as an impact tool to people who have or know of a pet that is in need of a better home. The slogan also functions as a comfort tool in that people who are looking to adopt pets know that they will receive a cat or dog that has been taken care of extremely well. It took me a while to come up with a color scheme because I had to cater to an audience who would be willing to give up or adopt a pet, and in this case it could be anyone. The colors I selected integrated well enough with the information that was conveyed which was not overwhelming. They were not too dark to make it seem dull and unappealing to the eye yet they were not too bright to make it appear as if the brochure was strictly to draw in children. The 3-D shapes and dark outlining of every figure gave them a sharp visual pattern and presented a more professional look which was my goal. Overall, I am happy with the outcome of the design but there is always room for improvement.

I agree, coming up with a unique design brochure is a lot easier said than done! When I first sat down to design the brochure for my group I didn’t know what to do or where to start. I tried just doing the pre made templates that Microsoft publisher already has in the program. That didn’t work so good, I really didn’t like what they had to offer and it just wasn’t what I was thinking about making my brochure looking like. So then I made to just design our brochure from scratch, which was better anyways. But when I did design our brochure I really did have to think about many different aspects and principles.

I agree with the other comment and your reading response that designing a colorful and professional brochure is a lot harder than I realized. I figured I'd just open up publisher and throw on some pictures and be done in five minutes. However it was hard to find pictures to go along with the content and that also convey the right message. I agree that your brochure develops a friendly tone right from the beginning when the reader sees the picture on the cover and when they look at the color design you used. I think your brochure is very good and you did a good incorporating a lot of the ideas from the book about what makes up a good brochure.

I also agree that designing a colorful and professional brochure is a must to keep the audience entertained. I also did not think that the brochure was going to take that long, but it did take quite a bit of time. Although I did enjoy writing out the content to caring for you pet, because it was something different that anything I have done in the past. I think our group did a good job incorporating the principles from the chapters.

I agree when you say coming up with the design is a tough part of the brochure. I know that I wasnt thinking about actually coming up with the design when I suggested I do the content for the General Brochure. I didnt realize that the concept was the hard part, not actually putting it on the page. I was more worried about using publisher or word to create the document. Im pleased with how the brochure turned out, actually how both turned out. I also like the slogan and the way the dog looks up to it. It gives the front a meaning and not just having a picture to have a picture. Overall, we did a great job on these brochures.

I agree that coming up with a unique design can be very difficult because you want it to stand out but you do not want to make it so weird that the reader is unsure of what is trying to be advertised. It really helps if you are familiar with the programs that design these types of brochures. Luckily in my group we had someone who was good at the design aspect of the designing. I think color schemes are very important when making a brochure because you want something that catches a person's attention but you do not want something that has colors that clash which makes it difficult for the person to read the brochure. Slogans can also be a very good thing if you have one that is catchy that people can pick up on.
