Week 6 Reading Response

As I read through chapters 24 and 37 there were a lot of different principles to keep in mind and apply when designing a brochure. Before I started to design the brochure for my group I sat down and thought about variety, conciseness, audience, and design of my draft of the brochure. When writing out the information for the brochure it was very hard to have sentence variety because a lot of the information was the same and had to say the same information. Our group tried to make the information in our brochure made up of simple and compound sentences. Our group also tried not to have too long of sentences in our brochure because we thought that would bore our audience. As our group developed all of the information that we needed in our brochure we were sure to keep conciseness in mind and cut some information out, so it wasn’t too long and overwhelming. Another very important factor or principle that we kept in mind the whole time we designed our brochure was the audience. This is very important for our brochure because we were trying to get people to volunteer for our organization and you have to tailor to them and attract them to your brochure. We also tried to get our audience in the Christmas and giving mood with Christmas colors and pictures of the event, this is very important because it is a persuasive aspect of the brochure designing experience. The design that our group decided to go with was the most important aspect of the whole brochure. As I looked at other groups brochures not one was alike and each one was great. Every group had a different design idea and that is what is so great about designing documents such as brochures.

I agree with what you have written about keeping in mind the variety, conciseness, audience and design for the drafting of the brochure as it is of prime importance. The fact that you have tried to keep in mind the importance of the audience, and keeping the subject matter to the point where the sentences are simple and compound is credible. Giving the audience the correct amount of information required is essential and the fact that you have tried to ensure this is given to the audience is also beneficial. The importance of presentation that you have tried to portray is also very effective as the audience does get swayed by what it sees; hence it is great that you have looked into this aspect while drafting the brochure. I also agree with your point where you think that by using these designing techniques of colour scheming and using pictures would attract the complete attention of all audiences. Overall I think it’s a good start to the brochure.

I think you did a good job incorporating most of the principles of the reading, and I was glad you laid the groundwork for the brochure. I really liked your idea with the color scheme and was something I would not have thought of. I agree our sentences are hard to vary, so I was hoping we could take a look at make sure that where we are able to use variety we made sure we did. Conciseness is something I think we did well, but we should take a look again to make sure we've done this to the best of our ability.

I think the group did a good job keeping our audience in mind during the process. I know when I was trimming up some of the text, I made sure it was easy to read for all kinds of people with different abilities. The colors and the pictures who used also do a good job getting people in that Christmas mood, which also helps get people in the giving to others mood. So I think this will work well for us.
