Reading Response Week 6

I found this weeks reading to be very helpful. I will definitely reference back to these two chapters when revising our brochure for the second draft. I agree that the use of pictures help convey the message of the brochure, or any document, when used appropriately. However, I feel that many people do not take this into consideration when creating their documents. The misuse of photos is often counterproductive and confusing to the read, ultimately detracting from the effectiveness of the document. I think the uses of photographs in our brochure were used effectively. We used them to support the text in our brochure. There is one section that outlines a number of events to volunteer for; here we used photos of these activities.

I found the section on citing photograph sources very interesting. I had never thought of this before, but I understand the logic behind it. I don’t think we have any problems with citing information for the pictures used in our brochure because the photographs we used were provided by the organization itself.

I also found the reading about text usage to be interesting as well. Varying sentences is a good idea; it helps keep the reader interested. I know there have been many times were I have stopped reading a document after the first paragraph. Luckily we didn’t have many problems with the text in our brochure. I feel that are sentences are concise and to the point emphasizing the key ideas well. The combination of these two elements ultimately had an effect on how we designed our brochure. We wanted to create a brochure that wasn’t overpowering with graphics or text but still painted a clear picture of the event. I think that we have been able to do this fairly well. In addition, we wanted to address those individuals who would be interested in volunteering. One of the ways we were able to accomplish this was by having the first word of the brochure be “volunteer.”

I also thought this weeks reading was helpful. The reading helped me focus on areas I never would have thought of. The idea that there are different types of sentences wouldn't have come to me while making a brochure. As you said yes the pictures do relay a message well, and they also can be misused. I also thought the information about citing pictures was interesting, I never really see photos cited except when looking through magazines. As for your group I thought it was a good idea to not overpower the graphics or text with picture. You have good ideas. Good luck on your project!

Your post sounded similar to mine, I also liked this weeks reading. It was very helpful towards creating the brochure. I agree that our group did an effective job at varying sentence structure and being as concise as possible. I attempted to keep that in mind when I was writing the text because I like many people do not like reading long paragraphs. If there is too much text on a page it can be overwhelming.
I also thought we did a good job using photographs. In my post I stated that we used them as evidence and to "convey a concept" as stated in the chapter. I thought we did an excellent job at utilizing the photographs we were given. I also thought about citing the pictures, but as you stated we only used pictures from the organization so we did not have to do this.
I like that you mention how “volunteer” is our first word. Stephanie (Group member) mentioned that we should attempt the technique of repetition for the theme of volunteering throughout the brochure. I thought that was a good idea to try to utilize when revising.

I also agree that this weeks reading was very helpful and helped me realize what things need to be considered when writing a brochure. I think that we can use some of these ideas when revising our draft and working towards our final product. As the saying goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words," is very true especially in a brochure where you want to catch the reader's attention very quickly. Many people also look past citing photographs and this is important to make sure that you are not illegally using someone else's work. I agree that for the most part our text usage was pretty good. I think that we took into account sentence variety and conciseness but there are still some parts that could be improved.

I never even thought about citing photograph sources either until I read the chapter, which is a very interesting topic from the chapter. I didn’t even think about this when I was designing my group’s brochure. This is something that I that I might have to keep in mind for our second draft although most of the pictures that we used in our brochure are from the organization that needs volunteers. So I don’t think that that we will have any problems with citing the information for the pictures that we used in our brochure because they were also provided to us by the organization that we are making the organization.
