Hello to Group 3

My email address is tricks@purdue.edu, but I think this page is an excellent way to stay in contact. We need to get started right away. The group Gantt chart is due on Friday, July 13th. I am not sure how to use one of these charts or where to find the design to make one. Perhaps in excel? I'll ask Ryan. We then need someone to divide up the tasks at hand.

Gantt Chart

I think using this page will be the best way to stay in touch. Using this page will allow everyone in the group to see what has been posted and know what is going on. I have started working on the Gantt Chart and hope to have a version ready soon (either posted tonight or tomorrow evening). If you google Gantt Chart, the second entry gives good instructions on how to create a basic chart. I'm sure there are other sources as well. We need to decide the individual responsibilities of each group member, because this is part of the gantt chart.

Work in Progress

Here is a work in progress of a Gantt Chart. It has everything we need so far except for the individual roles of each group member. We need to figure out who is going to do what, so that we can work on playing with this chart to add in these responsibilities. Again, here are the requirements for this part of the project.

Step 1: Group Gantt Chart. In a thoroughly executed Gantt chart, students should lay out group goals, a time table for the completion of each goal, and the individual responsibilities of each member. Each Gantt chart must include all duties and deliverables necessary for project completion as well as color coding and a key that specifies which group member will complete each duty. There are many resources online to help you produce your chart, including instructions for using Microsoft Excel to make it. Just Google "gantt chart" for more information, and use the samples provided on Week 5 of the calendar. Due Friday, July 13.

Update

Hey. I have revised my version of the Gantt Chart. It now has the responsibilities listed, but I'm not sure if it is specific enough. Take a look and I want some feedback soon. For the group activity reports, I thought we could each be responsible for one of them each week. Of course, everyone in the group should see it before it is submitted. This is a good start I think, but I need each of you to help me out with this, because we have to submit it tomorrow!

Also, I need all of you to post your reading response for week 5 so I can comment on them.

Ghantt Chart

Ghantt Chart looks great, but if I could do Group Activity Report #3 I would feel more comfortable. I am not sure what is needed in the report, so I would like to see a couple of your guys to make sure mine would be right.

RE: Ghantt Chart

Yeah. I just filled in the different weeks with all of our names. I can make changes to it still, it was just tentative. Also, we should all be writing the group activity reports together and have a final version completed the day before the deadline. Then, whoever is listed for that week can either submit it or I can. Now, the chart that I created is slightly different from all of the examples given, are all of you ok with this version? You need to let me know AS SOON AS YOU READ THIS!

Reply to email

Hey Alex, I think that the gantt chart looks fine and also have the work devided equally. I agree that using the wiki page would be great. I ll make sure i use it instead the email. Other than this I wanted to ask which gantt chart version use are talking about. If its the gantt chart 2.xls.

Friday!

I just had a final exam this evening so didnt get a chance to go through the chart. Will go through the material tomorrow morning and would try to create integrated tasks and a schedule for the group to follow. Call me anytime tomorrow if you guys want to discuss anything.

archit's picture

gantt chart

Hey I think it would be nice t diversify some of the tasks and be specific.
For example in the gantt chart we can have separate tasks such as , "review of the font, layout, heading font, font size and colour sequences." then we can add another thing after it, "review of the sequence in which the information should appear and in what way." and this could be done by everyone through circulating the idea.
Guys I also wanted to mention that it would be great for everyone if we used any sort of messenger. I have yahoo and msn messenger. I am currently in India and think that this way would be great to take quick desicions. We can also decide some time which is suitable to everone. I am 14 hrs and 30 min behind the lafayette time.

Group Activity Report

The Group Activity Report is due Sunday. Please provide some input and specific text for this and I will finalize it and submit it Sunday evening. If you need to contact me over the weekend, you have my cell phone number.

Gantt Chart

Looks Great

Faheem, the Gantt Chart looks great. Thank you for getting in touch with me last night and working with me to help make this first step of the project run smoother.

Ghantt Chart

Not sure what the green for my name means though. You'll have to explain that to me.

mfaslam's picture

details

i shall post a detailed explanation of the Gantt chart later today

Explanation

Everyone was assigned a color, so anything that appears green on the Gantt Chart is your responsibility. Faheem will further explain this when he posts his detailed explanation.

Group Activity Report Week 5

Hi everyone. I just wanted to let you all know that I emailed the activity report to Ryan. I'm sorry I did not do this earlier, I was out of town this weekend and only had access to a computer for part of the time. I was expecting to get home about 2.5 hours ago, but ran into some serious Chicago traffic and had to make my way through an alternate route. Sorry if I worried any of you. I also CCed all of you in the email, so you should be able to see exactly what I sent.

Microsoft Publisher

I was wondering if you all have Microsoft Publisher on your computer. I've used this program before and I was able to create a very professional looking document. If we all have this, it would help tremendously in creating the design/layout of the brochures. I hope you all do. I was going to start putting something together using it, but don't want to until I know that we all have it. Otherwise, it would just be a waste of time. Please post a response when you read this. Thanks.

Microsoft Publisher

I don't have microsoft publisher.

Reply

Dang. I wonder if Archit has it. If he does, then he could use the program to create the brochure and then convert it into a PDF so that you could review it. The problem is that you would not be able to make any changes yourself, someone else would have to do it. It could work out well since both of you are working on the Caring For Your Pets brochure. We'll have to wait and see what he says. Using this program could really be an asset for us though and I would hate to miss that.

I know that it came with Microsoft Office 2003 Professional when I bought it at Purdue.

I may have found a demo version that you might be able to use for 30 days or something. It is at this link: http://us20.trymicrosoftoffice.com/product.aspx?re_ms=oo&family=publishe...
You should try it and see if it will work. Then let me know.

archit's picture

ms publisher

hey i tried to use it. I think its a good software, but ill need some time to get aquainted with it.

mfaslam's picture

Publisher

Alex,

I can get a hold of Publisher.....Use the program which you think would be most effective

archit's picture

No problem

I have the ms publisher, but am not sure how it works.

Great!

From the response I've seen, I think we should go ahead and use Publisher. I think it will be very beneficial to this project. It's not hard to use. Open the program and a list comes up with publications for print at the top. Click on this to expand the selection. Then scroll down to brochures and click on it to bring up the list of all the options of preset design layouts and pick the one you want to use. You can edit the color schemes and such to make it fit to what you want. It will pull up a design that can be folded into a brochure. Therefore, the order in which you read it left to right on the screen may not be right, because it is set up to be folded. Also, at the bottom of the screen, there will be two icons representing pages that can be used to switch from one side of the page to the other so that the brochure will have text on both the inside and outside. If you have any questions about this program, let me know and I can try to help you. It might just take some playing around with to get it just right.

Not Sure Where to help

Well publisher sounds nice. Maybe I could turn in the weekly group report instead. Just send me a list of items that each person completed and I will write those reports if you like. Or help me find something to do for this project.

Thanks Terri

Terri

Did the free demo version that I posted above work? If not, Word can still be used.

Ideas

Does anyone have any thoughts on what to call the three different levels for the kennel sponsorship? I thought of a couple things, but they were either only related to dogs or used the names of cats and then switched to names of dogs (like what type of cat/dog) which was comparing one to the other and I wanted to avoid that. I'll keep thinking of course, but if you come up with something please let me know.

Brochure Draft 1

Due to some logistical issues(No internet access due to storm), Alex will post the General Information Brochure in the morning. I have posted the copy of "Caring for your Pet" brochure (Pg 2 text shall be added shortly). I shall update the file as soon as some issues are sorted with the text and file formatting.

General Information Brochure

I also emailed this to everyone, but I wanted to post it here as well. Just in case.

Giving credit in a caption

In chapter 24, I read about copyright information on images. Let's make sure every image we use is marked if need be.

Caring For Your Pets Brochure

Faheem, I think you are the one working on the Caring For Your Pets Brochure. Would you please email the group the latest version of this brochure? I know that I would like to take a look at where it stands and even provide some input. I will be working on the General Information Brochure tonight and making some changes based on some additional feedback from Ryan. After I have made these changes, I will email my brochure to the group so everyone can take a look. I want these documents to look as if we are going to turn them in for real, because the client will be reviewing these brochures and providing their own feedback. Again, they will be involved in the grading process for this project. Thanks.

Update

I have made my revisions to the General Information Brochure and have emailed everyone both the .pub and .pdf formats. This should ensure that everyone can view this file. I have noticed only one small issue, in the pyramid the colors seem to overlap. This only happens when I convert the file to a .pdf format. I will work on correcting this by tomorrow.

brochure revisions

hey Alex I have made some changes to ur draft of the brochure. I noticed the color overlapping in the pyramid when u mentioned, but I think it looks fuine and isnt that prominent. I have mailed u guys attaching the pdf and pub version.

Thanks Archit. I have to leave for work right now, but I'll look over your changes when I get home and then post the draft.

I have made the revisions to the General Information Brochure and have sent all of you the .pub and .pdf formats of this. I will post the brochure right now. Will you please email me the .pdf of the Caring For Your Pets brochure and I will add it to our post for Group 3. Thank you.

Group Report?????

Terri mentioned in her work blog for week 6, "I find this project to be diffucilt with never meeting with the group members to exchange even a flash drive. I did keep track of the work progress and wrote the Week 6 Group report."

Which group report is she referring to. Was there any other group thing that was supposed to be done???? I know I completely did the activity report for week 6 and Alex made some addition to that.

Is there some work I am missing out on?

RE: Group Report?????

I don't think there is anything that we have not done. I'm pretty sure that you and I have been on top of everything. Terri, will you please clarify this with us? Because like Faheem said, he wrote most of the report and I added a few details and emailed it to Ryan.

mfaslam's picture

Group Activity Report Week 7 & 8

The group activity report for week 7 is due on Sunday and this time its Archit's turn to write it. Archit, if you could please send out a draft to the group by sunday morning; it would be great for us to give some feedback on it.

Week 8 Activity report is to be completed by August 2nd by Terri.

Let me know if you guys need any helps.

Alex, I shall discuss the general information brochure with you on phone tommorow. Lets get this done with and nail the project.

Same Here

You can also let me know if you need anything when you are writing the reports. I would suggest reading everyone's work blogs so you can say exactly what we did.

Faheem, I think I could use some help on the general info brochure. The Humane Society said that they think the layout is "hard to handle and funky." I have absolutely no idea what they mean by this! And that was all they said about the layout. I don't think they had a problem with the gradient in the background, because I saw that another group also used a gradient, just with slightly different colors, but there was no mention to them about a bad design. Give me a call sometime and we can sort this out ASAP! Also, I can help make some changes to the Caring For Your Pets brochure.

I am working on making changes to my brochure right now, so check your email later because I may send out an updated version today. If not today, for sure sometime this weekend.

Revisions

Just to let you all know, I have just made the revisions to my brochure and have emailed both the .pub and .pdf versions to everyone. The only thing that still needs to be improved is the "hard to handle and funky design" which I have no idea what to do about. Please look it over and let me know what you think!
