RR4 - In the Eyes of a Resume Reviewer

After reading the articles, I compared the detailed advice it gave to my resume. I wanted to know how I measured up in the eyes of human resources. Having the fate of my résumé depend on someone who reads multiple others daily and spends less time reading it than it takes them to brush their teeth did not sit well with me. I asked myself, “How can I make it more appealing and unique then everyone else’s to have mine chosen”?

Upon starting my senior year after a summer of interning, I had a signed contract for full time employment upon graduation at US Steel in Gary, IN. I didn’t have to worry about job searching during the fall semester, but over Christmas break I received a letter and a phone call from US Steel that they were taking back all contracts they had given out to interns due to the deteriorating economy. I have never posted my resume on a search engine like “monster.com” so going through the reading and learning about which words are prone with being picked from a list by a computer and not just read by a person.

After reading Chapter 3, “Readers and Context”, from Technical Communication Today, I liked how emphasized how to write to audiences was. When writing to audiences you have to keep a few thoughts in mind while researching and writing your articles. The main focus is having a strong connection with the readers by knowing who they are, their needs, and when, where, and why they are reading the article.
