English 421Y: Technical Writing Online

I intend to write instructions on how to install a set of Active EMG – 81 pickups into an electric guitar. A pickup is a device in a guitar that captures the vibrations from the strings and converts them into an electronically signal which can be amplified. For this particular set of pickups we will install Active pickups (requires a battery pack) instead of Passive pickups(do not use a battery pack).

After reading the assigned articles for this week, they discuss primarily on key components of tailoring your instructions appropriately. The different strategies provided suggested specifying your audience and understanding techniques of technical description.

After reading the selected reading on tailoring your cover letter, I found it to be informative and helpful. The selected readings proved strategies in detailing ways to direct your cover letters to fit them appropriately towards a job ad. In the reading from “Kairos and the Cover Letter”, it discusses different approach methods to consider when writing a cover letter. One example in this reading stresses the importance of tailoring to the specific position described in the ad. This example provided insightful tools on tone and direction to consider in the “clincher” or opening paragraph.

The importance of my resume in gaining the attention of the interviewer cannot be overstated. Richardson states “…I read-I mean really read-less than half”. Richardson again states in his article “…they spark my interest in a particular product-you”. Our instructor writes in Blog #2, “ 10-30 seconds: That’s all the time you have to survive the first cut…”. As stressful as this is, the best thing to do is to do your best and establish some sort of “edge”. The “edge” I speak of revolves around differentiating myself from all others applying for the job.

The reading from Chapter 8: Organizing and Drafting provided helpful instructions to crafting an organized technical document. Specifically the details of this chapter include methods on how to organize an introduction, body, and conclusion with a genre for a technical document. At the start of the chapter, the author provided a good example of an excellence form of a document skeleton. The memo from NASA about the erosion around the space shuttle O-rings, demonstrated the reasoning of why it’s essential to properly organize a technical document.
