Unlike the iPhone and the BlackBerry, Windows Mobile does not refer to a specific phone. Windows Mobile is an operating system (much like Windows). Almost all mainstream cell phone manufacturers offer phones which run the Windows Mobile operating system. The operating system is independent and can be used with any carrier regardless of whether they are GSM or CDMA.
The Windows Mobile operating system has been developed by Microsoft and has been made to look much like the popular Windows operating system for PC’s. The newer versions of Windows Mobile even provide a simplified version of Microsoft Office so that users can view and modify word documents, and spreadsheets. Users also get access to a simplified version of Microsoft Outlook to receive and send email even in HTML format. If users subscribe to a data plan, they can use a variant of the popular Internet Explorer to browse the web.
Many applications exist for Windows Mobile such as Pocket Streets which integrates with the phone’s GPA device to locate the user on a map of the world. Users get to enjoy listening to music and videos with the mobile version of Windows Media Player.
Software developers interested in writing software for Windows Mobile are very well treated. They can use the well respected Visual Studio platform to design software on PC’s and simulate how the software runs on the phone without even needing access to real phone hardware. The same program that runs inside the simulator can them be copied to the phone and performs identically.
Corporations deciding which phones to buy are can benefit from knowing what the operating system is like, what applications run on it, and how easy it is for them and others to develop software for the phone. I think it would be best to place this information in several different parts of the paper. The description of the operating system can be a few paragraphs where the Windows Mobile phones are introduced. The software available for phones can appear in a table contrasting it with other phones. The information for developing software can be displayed as bulleted list of items as part of the additional benefits of using Windows Mobile.
