As stated in this chapter different genres are used to help achieve a purpose and patterns for your writing to make it better. After reading this chapter I discovered new genres that I didn’t think about while writing before. Some of these are definitions, Instructions, and proposals. I guess I never really thought about using these in my writing because I never really had to explain anything in great detail like you would with instructions. I have also never really had to give definitions in a piece because the terms I used were generally understood by the person reading it. I have also not had much experience with proposals because I have never really had to plan out anything. Even though I have not had experience in those three genres, they are still very useful to me and I now can put them in my arsenal of helpful strategies this book has given me.
This reading also reminded me of the importance of outlining and planning ahead when writing something. The outlining process can aid people in writing because it helps you choose your genres and gets you to think about what kind of questions you need to answer in your writing. Another thing in this reading that I never thought about doing before was using a presentation type software to help me collect my thoughts. I have used a PowerPoint type presentation software to create visual aids for speeches, but never thought to use them as an outline for my writing.
As stated in previous chapters it is very important to address the five W’s and H question before you start writing. There are also many different ideas you can use as “framework” to gear your writing towards. There is the compare and contrast method which makes writing your idea easier because you have one idea then you can think of things that are similar and things that are different about that certain idea. There is also the problem/needs/solution strategy which works well because you find the problem, think of why that problem needs to be fixed, and then give the solution.
