Cover Letter Draft

Does the cover letter need to be longer?
Is the look and tone of the cover letter good?

Suggestions

Form and Style:
1. You have almost all of the components to the cover letter. I think the only thing your really missing is the address of the company/ HR rep who you are addressing.
2. Your format looks good as far as blocking. The only thing out of line is your current address at the top. You may want to left align that.
3. I like the style that you use in your cover letter. It is not too formal, nor is it too informal.
4. You take a good tone in the letter. However, you may want to take a slightly more enthusiastic tone. In the opening paragraph you say “I was presented with the task…” You may want to change this to something along the lines of “I had the opportunity to…”
5. The only real mechanical error that I found was in the second paragraph. You should put a comma after Purdue University.
Content/ Rhetorical Context
1. You use keywords well in your letter, but you may want to use more of them. You seem to focus most of your resume around technical skills, but is there anything else you could add that the company is looking for? Communication skills, problem solving, etc?
2. You don’t really mention specific reasons why you are applying for the job. Especially in the opening paragraph. At the least you should add in that “I would be great for your company because…”
3. I think you did a good job of using technical terminology. This will help relate to the HR coordinator and increase your chances of getting an interview.
4. In the first paragraph, you may want to add in where you found the job ad. As I stated before, you should add in that “I will be great for the company because…” or something like that, instead of just “I have gained experience from…”
5. Your concluding paragraph is good. You give your contact information and end on a high note.
6. I think the main revision you need to make is to relate your experience to the job you are applying for. I know I’ve said this twice already, but you need to say you have skills that make you good for the job, not just that you have skills, because your skills are already listed on the resume. I think you have a great start, all you really need is a couple of sentences to relate your points to the job.
Your Questions:
1. I don’t think your resume really needs to be longer. If you add in the previously suggested sentences and use the address of the HR coordinator, your cover letter should fit the page better.
2. The look and tone of your letter is good. The only suggestion I have really, is trying to relate better to the HR coordinator, almost as if in a conversation. You want to find a way to connect yourself to them so that you will stick out in their mind after they read hundreds of other resumes and cover letters.

Critique of cover letter

1. I believe your cover letter is a sufficient size. I might suggest you group up some of those paragraphs, and have a more clear cut intro.

2. The tone was exactly what I believe a cover letter should portray. I would suggest you add more information on what you would do at the diagnostics engineer position if employed.

Form and style:

Your cover letter has the necessary components such as address, salutations, etc.

Your cover letter is in block format.

Your cover letter is formal/professional and you come off as a person.

The tone of your letter is great, its not too pushy, and you lay out your qualifications.

From what I can tell it seems to be absent of spelling error. Grammatically, I think a few paragraphs can be grouped together.

Content/Rhetorical Context

You do well giving a specific position you are interested in, and your qualifications are related.

I believe you need to mention what you will do if you receive the job, mention why you are the guy to have around. Your qualifications do state this, but how will you implement your knowledge in the future?

You give your information at the conclusion of your letter for possible contact later.

The #1 thing I think you should mention is the advantage this company will have if your hired.

Other than that you have a solid cover letter, in my opinion.
