Invisible Shield

JFlitt's picture

The process I will be describing is the installation of an invisible shield on any type of electronic device. The invisible shield is a protective coating that will protect most any small electronic device from scratches or damage. These instructions are legitimate because I don’t feel that they instructions they came with suffice in the full detail of the installation process. I have prior experience with installing invisible shields and have made installation videos in the past (link to youtube at the bottom). They different audience types will be those who have never installed an invisible shield and those who may have experience installing different brand name shields. Those who have never installed any shield will need to know every detail from prepping the area and cleaning to the phone to the actual installation process. Those who have installed shields of a different brand name would hopefully already have a good idea on preparing for the process and might just need information on how this process should be conducted correctly. I will include some graphics of the phone and what some of the possible problems may look like after the installation process, along with what the phone should look like after the installation process.

I have a few questions for your proposal, Jason:

  1. Are you doing video instructions? I think this is a fine way to go, but your proposal is unclear about the specific design of your instructions.
  2. Have you considered, to differentiate your instruction sets, approaching the users not simply as beginner and expert, but users who are applying invisible shields to more or less complicated devices? I would imagine that some devices are easier to cover than others. This distinction might better insure that your instruction sets are qualitatively different.
  3. What distinctions in your audience can you make in terms of needs, values, and expectations? Additionally, you need to have a finer level of distinction between your audiences. You have distinguished them only in terms of their knowledge and an experience.

As Jeremy and I have been telling the class, it is vitally important to your project's success that you produce two clearly distinct instruction sets. The general worry with this project is that the difference between the two sets will be one of degree (that is, the expert set will simply be a truncated version of the novice set); we are expecting a difference in kind (the expert set should be qualitatively different from the novice set). Be sure you are able to differentiate the two sets in this way. That is, it should be clear from the instructions that they have been purpose built to meet the competing needs, values, and expectations of the two audiences you have described here.

In answering these questions you will be moving in the right direction.

I appreciate your input, upon further observation of the project it seems that I should probably switch my topic! I am going to do a topic based on the pc (most likely repartitioning/formatting of a local hard drive within windows) so I can get some actual screen shots and graphics to use for my instructions. Due to the fact that I have already installed my invisible shield it wouldn't be feasible to attempt to get pictures of the installation process.

Hope this is ok!

Thanks
