Sample Graphics and Thumbnail for Ubuntu User

Chris's picture

I am using a 24pt Arial Rounded MT Bold font for my Heading. This heading will be a dark green along with the rest of my text. My objective and step number are also in this font. For the step instructions I am using a 16pt BrowalliaUPC font. My layout will be in a html format with a 800px width.

Some Color

I think you have a pretty solid design. I like how each step is offset, I think it helps fill out the page and help the reader keep track of where they are while still being easy to read. You also used white space particularly well; I know this is something I have been struggling to use effectively. The open dialog boxes in you graphics will also draw attention to you points and make them easy to follow. I do however think some color would help, maybe with the titles or something. Once the pictures are in you could maybe pick a color that would compliment your graphics and give your instructions a tied together look.

Graphics and Thumbnails instructor feedback: Chris

I have a few comments and suggestions:

  • Your graphics seem to be well selected. They are, however, a little grainy (you might play with the resolution here).
  • Do you plan on supplementing your graphics with elements that will focus the user's attention (circles, arrows, highlights, etc.) when necessary?
  • It is hard to tell what qualitative differences exists between the instructions. Indeed, the assignment prompt asked for two distinct thumbnails. Remember, two different sets of users may need to differently designed instruction sets. You might check out Ben's thumbnails for an example to two similar yet distinct thumbnails for novice and expert audiences.
  • Remember to focus on creating sets that differ in kind rather than degree. The design of the sets is a good place to begin doing this.
