Graphics and Thumbnails: Purdue Course Search Application

My graphics are in the thumbnail documents. There are two: for novices and for experts.

Overall, I think you are off to a solid start with these documents. The arrangement seems sensible, and you have produced good screenshots. Even though the graphics are not all the same size, their dimensions make sense and fit the structure, so they work well in their context. One thing I would call to your attention is that there seems to be very little differentiation between the novice and expert thumbnails. It seems that you didn't turn in a proposal, so let me just remind you that you want to make sure that your audience groups are discreet groups with individuated needs, expectations, and values. This front page post clarifies this. This doesn't necessarily mean that your instruction sets have to be radically different, but you want to make sure that you're staying user-centered rather than systems-centered.

I like how your arrows are the same color as the text. You did a good job making use of the white space. You also did a nice job at placing a lot of detail on the first page without making it seem overly cluttered. I like how you used large numbers for your steps. It makes it easy to follow the steps. I think with a little distinction between your two types of instructions you have a nice layout which is easy to follow.

Nice Work

I really like the layout of these instructions. The first page is well done with the arrows and use of white space. I also like the page separating lines on the other pages, it really helps to distinguish the different steps. And the numbering is great too. I actually might use something like this in my novice instruction set.

I really liked how you worked your instructions into your graphic. You make it very clear what the different sections do. However it doesn't appear that you have any real direction to your instructions. Also for your novice instructions you might want to simplify it for the novice reader. Having a large picture with lots of arrows and writing might be overwhelming for someone who already doesn't know what they are doing. Maybe if you arranged things so that on one side of the page you had the steps in order that then pointed to your graphic, it would be a little clearer.
