Instructions: Rough Draft and Usability Test

ymyang's picture

In my novice instruction set, I chose to make the layout in landscape as opposed to portrait. It should help the inexperienced reader look ahead and before their task for easier reference. In addition to the pictures provided, I offered the novice readers additional remarks to help them further with the directions. Most of them are tips and suggestions on how to perform a certain direction. I elaborated more in the novice instructions and added a couple more steps that they will need to understand.

In my experienced instruction set, I made the layout portrait as opposed to landscape. This will give the reader an easier time to move through the directions. I did not use the additional remarks next to the photos because I did not think they would need the extra hints and suggestions. I also ignored some of the simple steps to not get in the way of what is important.

Because there are several parts to a bicycle, I am curious to see what important elements I chose to ignore are needed for both audiences. I feel like I will need more graphics and a couple of more steps along with better suggestions. From my usability test, I hope to find the weak areas of my instructions and pay attention to those specifically.

Useability-Changing bike tire

Please answer the following questions on your experience:
1.Have you had any experience with changing bicycles tires before?

Yes, been riding/working on bikes for as long as I can remember.

2. How was the transitioning from task to task? Was it clear and easy to move onto the next step?

Excellent, very easy to follow. The pictures gave a clear indication to the user what to
expect/when to move on.

3. Were the steps easy to understand? What kinds of general troubles did encounter in the steps?

Yes, easy to understand. You had some good pointers such as putting some air in the tube before putting it back on the rim. The only problem I saw was you didn’t mention anything about disconnecting the brake assembly. Other than that I think these instructions are well done.

4. Please write any other additional comments that you think will help make these instructions
clearer.

Add a step about disconnecting the brake assembly on the novice instructions. You could also talk about buying the right size tube and or selecting a tube with the right valve (presta or shrader). These might be some details a novice might not think about.

Bike Tire Usability

I didn’t have any difficulties on any steps.
1. I have had experience with changing bike tires before. I have never done road cycling bikes like this one before however.
2. Since I have changed a tire before and then read your instructions, I feel that your order of steps is easy to follow. It was simple to understand what I should do next.
3. Your directions were clear and easy to follow. I didn’t have any problems following them.
4. I think your directions are clear and easy to follow. I like how you included using the tire irons. On the few tires I’ve changed I never used those. That seems to make this much easier.
