Disk Formatting

*** Please note I realize that it says Novice instructions and Expert instructions at the bottom of each instruction set, this is for identification purposes and will be removed on the final draft.***

These instruction sets describe how to format a Flash or Hard Disk Drive within Windows Vista and/or Windows Server 2008.
The expert instructions include the same beginning steps as the novice, but they also have more detailed information regarding some of the middle steps that allow for further customization of the format process.

Please complete the usability test by posting a comment in this post, the pdf attached for the usability test describes what should be done.

Thanks!! Smiling

I was impressed by the clean layout of your instructions. I will test these throughout spring break.

I had no difficulty in following your novice instructions. Each step was clear and precise. The layout you’ve designed promotes readability and understanding. Also, the warnings you’ve included are effective in informing the reader of what will happen when he or she proceeds, that is, completely erasing the drive. However, I do have 1 suggestion. I have found that it is not uncommon for novice users to have trouble with navigational commands (i.e. Click Start > Run > etc) if different actions are involved. For instance, in step 1 of your novice instructions you direct the reader to click Start, then click Run, then type in a command and click Ok, all in one step. In the past, I have found it more effective to separate navigation and typing. So something like, 1) Navigate to: Start > Run. 2) Type ‘diskmgmt.msc’ 3) Click OK. For most users, your instructions will more than suffice, however, I think a small few may encounter some trouble, which are a few too many.

Your expert instructions do well to elaborate on additional options one has in formatting his or her drive, but I think that the arrows on the screenshots are a bit excessive. Expert users will be aware of where to click and type. Other than that, both sets of instructions were easy to follow and accurate.

1. Are the graphics helpful?
The screenshots in the novice instructions are very helpful. However, I feel using the same ones for the expert users is a bit excessive.

2. Are the graphics easy to find from the instructions?
Yes, each graphic was very easy to locate.

3. Is there enough information provided at each step?
Yes, each step provides more than sufficient information to successfully perform the step at hand.

4. Is every step relevant and did the process go well for you?
Yes, each step was relevant and necessary. I was able to follow your instructions with no difficulty, doing only what you’ve directed.

5. Is there enough variation between the novice and expert instruction sets?
Although you’ve elaborated more on the advanced options in your expert instructions, I think they are very similar in design, especially in regard to screenshots. I don’t know that it is a major concern that they are considerably different, but you might want to consider revising the screenshots in the expert instructions, as they are rather superfluous.

1. Yes, the graphics are helpful.
2. Yes, the pictures are large enough
3. Yes, each step is detailed enough
4. I would say avoid having an arrow pointing to the “Ok” button as many users could see where that is on the screen. The process did go well for me as I had a spare flash drive to format.
5. Yes, the added steps were helpful.
