Purdue University iPhone Services Instructions and Usability Test

jstn's picture

I have prepared 4 thorough tutorials for configuring Purdue University's iPhone capable services on the iPhone. The novice instructions contain considerably more detail than those for the expert. Also, each step is accompanied by a screenshot, taken with a native iPhone utility, with the appropriate action outlined in red, so as to prevent confusion. The expert instructions are more straight forward and have fewer screenshots. The primary difference between the novice and expert users is which aspects of the services are being configured, as well as the degree of detail provided. In my novice instructions, I have outlined precisely how to connect to Purdue's PAL2.0 wireless network as well as how to configure Purdue's MailHub email service on the phone, so as to allow students to constantly stay in touch with their email. For the expert users, however, I have outlined how to connect to Purdue's PAL wireless network, as well as the VPN, and the Microsoft Exchange service. I feel this was necessary as the majority of expert users will likely be students, staff, or faculty that have a Purdue Exchange account and the VPN provides more access than the PAL2.0 service.

In regard to my initial usability test plans, I have since decided to omit the survey test and focus primarily on the document markup and read-and-locate test. I would like for the test readers of my instructions to complete both of the aforementioned tests, as outlined in the introduction of the attached PDF. It would prove most convenient to have each reader submit a summary in the form of a comment on my blog.

The format of my instructions is difficult to recognize from the attached PDF's as I had to load them into Microsoft Word in order to convert them to PDFs. My instructions are intended as a website and, therefore, would not be constrained by the normal page bounds of Microsoft Word. Rather, each tutorial would appear as a single page, that scrolls until the reader reaches the end. Also, to promote readability and testing, I have isolated each service into its own respective document, since each would have it's own 'page' on the website.

Usability Test for Justin Greer:

1. Document Markup
a. Novice Pal 2.0: I think only step 2 might be placed before step 1.
b. Expert Pal 2.0: The directions are understandably expert directions, but pictures might have too many steps on each.
c. Novice Mail: Step 2 might go before step 1 again.
d. Expert Mail: well done.

2.
a. Novice Criteria (Email):
i. New email account general settings: Step 7 and it was very easy to find. Even if anyone has not used an IPhone I think they could figure it out.
ii. Incoming email server setting: Step 9a and I was kind of confused on what I was looking for.
iii. Outgoing email server settings: Step 9b and same with incoming email server.
b. Novice Pal 2.0:
i. Pal 2.0 security settings: Step 6 really easy to find.
ii. Pal 2.0 certificate settings: Step 7 really easy to find.
iii. Verification for Pal 2.0: Step 7 kind of easy to find.

c. Expert Exchange:
i. Email address format: Step 5a moderate difficulty.
ii. Exchange domain: Step 5b moderate difficulty.
iii. Exchange DNS address: Step 7a difficult
iv. Sync Settings: Step 9 easy

d. Expert Pal 2.0:
i. Format network name: Step 4 moderate
ii. Security Level: Step 5 moderate
iii. Connection settings: 14 easy
