Overall, my instructions sets are similar, showing each type of user a different way of approaching the same goal. My novice audience is someone who has installed Microsoft Office, but has never took advantage and tried Outlook. The novice audience is also someone who has limited knowledge of how a PC works, and my instructions show a detailed walkthrough. My expert audience is someone who knows a little about setting up e-mail systems, but may not know exactly how Outlook operates. This person still may need to know some basics, but there are some intermediate steps missing and some pictures are taken away. Also, the expert instruction set has a few additional steps such as testing and troubleshooting a problem with sent mail folders.
My usability test is in the form of a survey, with some Yes/No questions as well as questions that require some thought about the way my instructions are presented. They deal with simplicity, order, and readability. I am looking for something similar to a resume, where the user's eyes should be drawn to key points in the instruction set. Please e-mail your answers to the survey to me at, apersohn@purdue.edu . (hopefully through Outlook)
