The job is located in Santa Clara Valley, California which is an hour away from San Francisco. The location portion of the job is great because it will meet one of my career goals. I also selected this job because it seemed nearly perfect with my job experience and education. The job is a full time General Design Intern that incorporates manufacturing and activities with product lines. The requirements for the job are to be currently enrolled undergraduate pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Product Design. Previously I worked for a manufacturing company as an intern and also worked as a machinist. This internship also incorporates design and I had a previous internship that had a design aspect in it but my designing skills are not reliable as I want them to be. The experience in this internship would fill my void in designing and help me for the future. I thought that the location and description of this job made it an ideal job for my personal needs and wants. Since manufacturing companies in Indiana are recently in turmoil, I think that a company like Apple Inc. would be a great opportunity to enter the manufacturing world.
In the same job opportunity page, there is another job available for a Product Design Intern that involves thermal engineering. The requirements for this job are a student that is majoring in Mechanical Engineering with emphasis in heat transfer and fluid mechanics. This job was also interesting because I am currently enrolled in a fluid mechanics and heat transfer class. Before the internship begins I will have already completed the courses and we qualified for the internship. Testing and research are a majority of tasks in this internship and these are both something that I have never done. This internship would be a great experience that I could use in the future.
In researching the company, Apple Inc. has had close to 30 years of success. Especially recently with many new features, Apple Inc. has had its greatest success in last two years. This fact assures that the company will be a reliable and successful company for the future.
I thought that using the internet search engine for a job was a great experience. It makes the job search process quicker and more efficient. I thought that finding a page with multiple job opportunities was great. It let me decided which job I was more qualified for and choose one. If I had to choose between the General Design Intern and the Product Design intern I would choose the General Design Intern. I would choose this job because it involves manufacturing and more hands on project than the testing and experiments involved with the product design intern. I also thought that the job search was relevant to the resume and cover letter project because it made me realize the structure of my resume. I realized that if I am apply to a certain job that I might have to alter my resume to the company’s requirements. With this job being revolved around manufacturing, focusing on my education and manufacturing experience will definitely help.
Instructor commentary
This response demonstrates that you have researched this company and considered its place in your career track, both of which are good activities. However, there are a few ways that this analysis could be revised. One way is to provide more concrete development of how your experiences fit with the prospective job. For example, you state: "Previously I worked for a manufacturing company as an intern and also worked as a machinist. This internship also incorporates design and I had a previous internship that had a design aspect in it but my designing skills are not reliable as I want them to be," however you don't clarify where these internships were, what they involved, and—most importantly—what specific tasks you accomplished that connect to specific key words in the job ad. A specific story about using a particular software package, tool, or technique to produce a complete work has more impact than a general statement of qualifications. The golden rule of employment documents is show, don't tell. Specific stories stick; general statements don't.
Also, you should turn to a discussion of how your analysis shapes your cover letter (and other documents). Recall that the assignment description states: "Think of the Job Ad Analysis as a prelude to the Cover Letter." You should make tentative determinations about what the central theme or argument of your cover letter will be and how you will use the material in this analysis correspondingly. You want to treat this analysis as groundwork for the documents ahead of you, which means attention to both content and structure.
Overall, however, you've got a good start, and you should be able to mine much of this content for your other employment documents.
