From Teacher to Welder

My major is Engineering Technology Teacher Education this degree points me in the specific career as secondary education teacher. Unlike most majors mine has a very specific destination in mind. This is nice because I will be very qualified as a Tech. Ed. teacher, however; it is also a little scary because it limits my options for different career opportunities. In this job search I looked for opportunities outside of teaching class.

Continental Airlines
Technology Intern - Business Analyst

I chose this internship for a few reasons. One of the main reasons was the reason that most people get an internship: experience in their field before they graduate. Also by possibly working for this company now I would better my chances in having a job after a graduate. I was also interested in the location of the company. Having never been to Texas I am also interested in finding out what it is like. Besides working for an airline company has to involve some sort of travel related perks.

Job Ad Analysis- Compass Airlines

The job I have chosen to apply for is an airline pilot job with Compass Airlines. I chose this particular job because I am majoring in professional flight and because flying is something that I love to do. There are many different types of flying jobs that professional pilots can do, but I am most interested in commercial flight. I chose this particular job with Compass Airlines because it is a wholly owned subsidiary of Northwest Airlines. Ideally it would be great to work for Compass Airlines in order to eventually move up to flying for Northwest Airlines. I also chose this particular job because with the economy currently falling on hard times airline pilot jobs are very scarce so pilots have to apply for any type of available pilot job. This particular job with Compass Airlines would teach me so much about the commercial airline industry and allow me to build additional flight hours in order to progress to larger airline companies, as well as progress from a co-pilot to a captain.

I have thought a lot lately about what I want to do when I finish my degree in May. My background and experience qualifies me to work in agricultural sales and marketing. However, having worked in the corn and soybean sales industry, I have learned that I did not excell running my own territory. While I was working in Ohio, I managed $3 million dollars in seed sales. I was very good in front of people, I knew my products and gave good information to customers I came in contact with. I also learned that I am not ready to run my own business.

Upon starting my senior year after a summer of interning, I had a signed contract for full time employment upon graduation at US Steel in Gary, IN. I didn’t have to worry about job searching during the fall semester, but over Christmas break I received a letter and a phone call from US Steel that they were taking back all contracts they had given out to interns due to the deteriorating economy. Now I need to speed up my job search efforts because of my lack of activity last semester.
