Job Ad Analysis- Compass Airlines

The job I have chosen to apply for is an airline pilot job with Compass Airlines. I chose this particular job because I am majoring in professional flight and because flying is something that I love to do. There are many different types of flying jobs that professional pilots can do, but I am most interested in commercial flight. I chose this particular job with Compass Airlines because it is a wholly owned subsidiary of Northwest Airlines. Ideally it would be great to work for Compass Airlines in order to eventually move up to flying for Northwest Airlines. I also chose this particular job because with the economy currently falling on hard times airline pilot jobs are very scarce so pilots have to apply for any type of available pilot job. This particular job with Compass Airlines would teach me so much about the commercial airline industry and allow me to build additional flight hours in order to progress to larger airline companies, as well as progress from a co-pilot to a captain. Upon graduation from Purdue I will have received a bachelor’s degree in professional flight and will have a large number of flight time, and all of the required rating and endorsements that prospect employers will take into consideration when hiring pilots. Upon graduation not only will I have a bachelor’s degree in professional flight, but I have also completed three summer internships with an agricultural flight company call Ed Air, which is a crop dusting company. Through the internships I have gained a vast amount of knowledge about flying and aviation technology that I can carry into the commercial flight industry. There are not many flight students who get the opportunity to have very hands on internships, which should help to make me a more marketable candidate when applying for commercial flight jobs. It is very important for this particular job, and for all pilot jobs that the pilots be very alert, focused, excellent communicators, and be able to follow direction from others. I feel that I posses all of these qualities and would be able to carry out the job functions excellently. I also feel that I am a very responsible person and in order to be a successful commercial pilot you must be a very responsible person because you have the lives of many people depending on you to be responsible and to make good responsible decisions. Pilots also must be very hard working individuals that are willing to work long hours, weekends, nights and even holidays. I feel that I am very hard working and also very driven to become a commercial pilot that I will be able to work the stressful long hours with ease. To me flying as a commercial pilot is not going to be a job that I dread doing because flying is my passion and does not feel like work to me. Compass Airlines is primarily based out of Chantilly, Virginia, which would work for me because upon gradation I am willing to move in order to get a job as a commercial pilot, otherwise pilots also have the option of commuting, via the airlines, to the particular airport they are working in. Compass Airlines is a relatively new company that just opened its doors in 2004 but I am very interested in it because of the fact that it is part of Northwest Airlines which is a very prominent commercial airline company. Compass Airlines would make and excellent stepping stone for a new pilot that has just finished college. Compass Airlines flies a smaller jet called and Embraer 175 which makes a lot of commuter type flights with only around seventy people aboard the aircraft. http://jobview.monster.com/getjob.aspx?JobID=78585688&JobTitle=PILOT+-+Compass+Airline&q=Flight+Pilot&cy=us&lid=316&re=0&pg=1&dv=1&pp=25&AVSDM=2009-01-12+16%3a08%3a00&seq=14&fseo=1&isjs=1&re=1000

I think the reasons you give for why this position suits you are solid. What you need to think about (and do more of) is why the company should be interested in you. You point in these directions, but you need to two more of two things: research about the company (how it likes to see itself as a small company or how it sees itself relative to the big airlines) and thinking of concrete instances that demonstrate the traits and abilities you hope to highlight. It is good to be hard working, but it is also very easy to say, too. Rather than explicitly saying that you are a hard worker, you need to describe a project you completed that not only highlights other skills you have but that subtle demonstrates your hard work. For instance, you write, "I am very hard working and also very driven to become a commercial pilot that I will be able to work the stressful long hours with ease." Rather than saying "I am a hard worker," tell a story in such a way that the reader, after they have read it, says, "what a hard worker this guy is." Describe particular skills that you have; let traits such as "hard worker" infuse the entire letter.
