Cooking Rocks!

I love cooking. Looking at your layouts the design looks good. I feel that the section cooking utensils should not be in the expert guide but in the beginner guide. Experienced users know what utensils they need while cooking while a beginner would not be sure. I also like your topics for the beginner guide as it is something they would do on a cooking show. As for the images you selected I would suggest using a picture of a good and bad looking piece of meat to show the user what to look for. Of course a final picture of what the recipe will look like when it is done but you knew that.

Nice Subject

I like the fact that you chose to write things about cooking. Many people in college are scared to cook, but if they would try it, they would know it really isn’t that hard. Your two layouts look like they would be good for this type of application. You have it laid out so it covers all the things needed and it is in order like every set of instructions should be. Your graphics are nice and clear so people can see exactly what they need in order to create this meal. Overall it looks like you will have a nice looking project.

The pictures that you took turned out great. The lighting is good and there is nothing distracting floating around in the background. They are very clear and the products are a good size. The beginner instructions layout looks really good too. It looks like you are really going to cover everything including how to select and buy meat. The expert instructions really get to the point and reads nicely. The way that both of the layouts flow straight down will work really well with a set of cooking instructions. I think that this a good start on the Instructions Project.

It looks like you are using fairly different layouts for your two sets of instructions, which is usually a good way to keep things user-centered. It looks like you're also getting pretty good consistency with your images, although you want to keep the light levels even. (The oil and spices shot is brighter than the beef shot—probably one shot is horizontal and the other is pointing down at an angle.) You don't have a big discrepancy or anything, but little details separate good work from excellent work.

I'm also curious about your page size. What is it about 7 x 9.25 that makes these dimensions appropriate for this subject? Does this enable the instructions to fit somewhere, or does this suit the conventions of a particular publication context? It makes me interested to see the rough draft.

Shu, I like how you used two different layouts to separate the novice from the advanced chef. As Jeff said, I do believe that the cookware/utensils should be in the novice instructions. I also think that your approach to check "doneness" should be placed in both sets of instructions since it is pretty unique. Have you thought about adding a list of possible side dishes or beverages that complement this particular piece of meat? I think this would be a good addition for a novice cook looking to impress their guests.
