I have a few comments and suggestions:
Your graphics appear to cover the same thing. Additionally, they are not consistent visually. The key is to produce your own graphics that work well together. Consistency is a hallmark of professional instructions.
It appears that the dimensions of your sample graphics do not confirm with the image placeholders in your thumbnail. Be sure to anticipate how your images will factor in the page layout.
Watch your alignments throughout the document. You need to make sure that body text, images, and text boxes all fit the document's design logic.
Are you comfortable with the 8.5 x 11 page size? Do you think that is appropriate for both sets of users? (This is a genuine question.)
It is hard to tell what qualitative differences exists between the instructions. This maybe an issue just for the thumbnails (that you later resolve in the actual instruction sets), but the difference now appears to be the expert set is a scaled down version of the novice set. Remember, two different sets of users may need to differently designed instruction sets. You might check out Ben's thumbnails for an example to two similar yet distinct thumbnails for novice and expert audiences.
Remember to continue to focus (as you already are) on creating sets that differ in kind rather than degree.

I think that your design for the novice set may need a little work. It will probably be ok for the advanced set (still will need tweaking). Something you could use for your novice set, check out this guy's first page: http://www.digitalparlor.org/sp09/421Y1/node/628
I saw your sample pics and I thought you could do something like this as well for yours. Also, for your steps, I would make the headings of the "phases" stand out a little bit more. You could even reduce the font size of the text below them and/or add underlines/colors. I think something needs to be done with that white space to the right of the pics in the advanced set, either center the current pic or add some text or something.
