English 420Y - Business Writing Online

After searching the internet for brochures, I found one I liked at http://www.uccwireless.com/Radio%20brochure%20back.jpg. The brochure is for Motorola and its options for business communication. I really like how the information jumps off the page at you. Many of the elements from Chapter 25 can be found in this brochure.

After reading the selections in The Thompson Handbook, I realized how important it is to take context into account when writing. The writer must utilize his or her knowledge and incorporate feelings for a specific purpose. The reader has certain expectations and knowledge. The writer must work to create a piece that accurately brings the information to the reader. You really need to analyze your audience and the situation in order to write a meaningful message. You need to make sure you are concise and very direct with your writing.

After reading the articles on the JetBlue crisis, I was very surprised that a large airline could experience that big of problems. Obviously no one can predict the weather or truly be prepared for every situation, but one might think that an airline could have emergency weather procedures and compensation for customers. Delays always happen but the confusion that followed really hurt JetBlue. They really did not have any good plans in place and their actions did not help the situation.

For this project, I researched internship opportunities and found an accounting internship with Siemens. I did a self assessment of skills and why I am qualified for this position. I then wrote a cover letter and resume. After completing the documents, I evaluated what I learned and how I did. I have attached the file with all these documents.

This article from The Boston Globe gives more information about the cancelled flights from Jet Blue. It gives more details about why flights were still being cancelled a few days after the ice storm. Jet Blue encountered problems when the pilots could not fly because they did not have enough time to rest. This article also talks about how people, such as Maria Arbelo, were inconvenienced by the crisis.

After quickly reading through the resumes, I have chosen numbers 5, 9, 20, 22, and 32. I really liked how these resumes were easy to read. They had a good layout and were very eye appealing. These resumes were well written and had good objectives. Their work experience often correlated with their objectives. As a group, they were involved and good students.
