URBAN Work Blog Week 8

This week has been devoted to making the final changes with regards to the comments made from the Humane Society. The biggest concern I had to face dealt with the layout of the General Information Brochure. According to the Humane Society it was “funky and hard to handle.” Seeing how this was all that they specified about the layout, I assumed that they meant that they did not like the way the four column brochure would be created because they would have to use paper that is larger than a standard sheet of computer paper.

5:00 Appeal to Emotions: +

I think that the people who read our brochures will be able to connect with them. The images that we used play a large role in creating this appeal to the emotions of our readers. The text is focused on the reader and allows them to understand each section of the brochure well.

URBAN Work Blog Week 6

This week has been dedicated to coming up with ideas and creating the general information brochure. I did a lot of research about the Humane Society on the internet as well as other similar organizations to get an idea of how to best create this brochure. I also spent time thinking about the best ways to communicate effectively with the target audience, which ranged anywhere from children to adults. I decided that the best way to do this was to keep the information as simple as possible, and also to present it in a way that is easy to sort through and pull out key points.

Reading Response Week 6

Chapter 24 of the Thomson Handbook stresses visual design and layout. These factors are of great importance to the success of this brochure. First of all, pictures were used to improve the appeal of the brochure to the reader. The pictures used draw out an emotional response to the readers and urge them to adopt a pet, volunteer their time, or donate supplies. For example, next to the section about adopting a pet, a picture was inserted showing a happy couple with a newly adopted pet. They are smiling and showing all the joys of being a pet owner.

I wanted to say that I would have posted this last night. It was finished, but a storm knocked out my internet connection.

URBAN Work Blog Week 5

I accomplished all the goals of the group for Week 5. I designed and created the Gantt Chart and initiated all the group discussion. The day that I received the names of my group members, I immediately sent out an email to introduce myself and get the project started. I provided everyone with my contact information (cell phone, email, and AIM screename) so that I can be contacted at any time. I asked everyone else to provide the same information when they replied, but only received some contact information from one other member.

Reading Response Week 5

I think the layout of this brochure was its key element to success. The font of the title is clearly larger than any other part of the brochure, and the opening paragraph of text is marked by using a drop cap. It then goes into the text, but uses bullets to clearly indicate all the key points and allows the reader to easily locate them compared to having everything typed out in a list. All the text is grouped into related subjects. Whenever the subject changes, a header is used to clearly state this to the reader.
