English 421Y: Technical Writing Online

The process that I am choosing for this project will be to correctly use Call of Duty 5 on XBOX 360 in both a single player game mode and an online XBOX live game. I will show my audiences how to turn on the XBOX and all of the necessary steps to successfully start Call of Duty 5. There are many different steps that need to be followed to correctly set up a game, including connecting and turning on your XBOX, inserting the game, and navigating throughout all the menus for the two different users.

For my instructions i am going to tell everyone how to re grip a golf club. I am going to give you a step by step guideline on how to re grip, as well as all of the supply's that you might need. I think that this is a good idea because there are very few people that know how to do this. I am a qualified person to explain this because i have done it a thousand times. There are two ways to re grip a club, the first being the "old fashion way" with double sided tape and paint thinner. The second way is with an air compressor.

-For my instructions I plan to describe how to download and use torrent software. The instructions will be using the free software known as µTorrent for the downloading program and the website http://btjunkie.org as the source for torrent files.

I intend to write instructions on how to install a set of Active EMG – 81 pickups into an electric guitar. A pickup is a device in a guitar that captures the vibrations from the strings and converts them into an electronically signal which can be amplified. For this particular set of pickups we will install Active pickups (requires a battery pack) instead of Passive pickups(do not use a battery pack).

The instructions that I will write will be instructions for a process, the process of becoming a better Track and Field High Jumper. My instructions will cover the different parts of the high jump process, the flight, the takeoff, and the approach. I feel that writing instructions about the process of becoming a better high jumper is very legitimate and necessary because as a college track and field high jumper myself, I know that there is always a need for additional instructions and opportunities to improve.

I thought about writing a set of instructions on how to change the oil on an automobile. The way the economy is going these days people are looking for more ways to save money. What better way to do that than change the oil in one's car themselves, rather than paying someone else to do it for them. These instructions are legitimate because changing oil can be an easy process and almost all vehicles are the same. Changing oil in automobiles is pretty much an universal process. So, one set of instructions apply to almost all types of vehicles.

For my instructions project, I will be writing instructions on how to successfully install a simple wall shelf into drywall without having to use the studs. I am qualified to write these instructions because I have spent 6 years of my life working in a hardware store and have had a lot of hands on experience with all of the materials used in the process. I have frequently had customers come to me trying to install shelves in walls for all sorts of things like picture, speakers, and storage boxes.

For the technical instructions project, I will be creating documents detailing how to install the Windows operating system on a Macintosh computer. The instructions will cover how to backup a Mac system drive, how to create a partition and format it properly for Windows to understand, how to install the Windows operating system, and how to configure Windows to interact with Mac peripherals. These instructions are legitimate and necessary because the Mac OS is becoming more and more popular, and most business software is only compatable with the Windows operating system.

The process that I chose for project two is instructions for fixing a malfunctioning bicycle tire on a standard road bike. In detail, I will explain what to look for in a flat tire, the types of leaks a tire can have, the proper direction for patching or replacing a tire, and correctly pumping the tire to a sufficient pressure. Cycling is gradually becoming a more popular sport and the most common maintenance needed is tire care. I have been cycling for over three years and have had to change a countless amount of tubes and tires.

I recently attended a meeting with Calvin Clark, a representative from Apple, regarding the plans and direction for the future of the Purdue University Macintosh Users Group (PUMUG), for which I am the webmaster. In this meeting, Calvin informed me of an interesting fact, that Purdue has the second largest university iPhone user population in the world.
