Week 12 Individual Activity Blog

Joey M.'s picture

Well to start the week off, we had to first communicate to each other and figure out exactly what we wanted to do. Once we started emailing each other, I decided to ask everybody to write out some of their thoughts on what to do for this project. After everyone had replied, I asked them to narrow it down to their top three favorite choices. From there, it was pretty obvious what we were going to end up doing for our project. Pretty much everybody in my group had the cell phone topic in their top three, so we all just decided that we were going to do that topic.

White papers intro...

After reading some of the instructor posts and the Thomson Handbook it is apparent to me that white papers are not often used in too many different instances, but they can be used by almost any organization or company in the world that offers a product or service and by really any kind of government. The main goal of a white paper for a company is basically to explain to a potential customer all of the technical specs of their product/service in a way that the decision maker will understand how and why their offering will improve their business.

Instructions: XBOX 360 and Call of Duty 5

Both of my instructions give the necessary steps to successfully play Call of Duty 5: World at War on the XBOX 360 console. My novice instruction set tells the reader how to hook up, turn on, and to play a single player game of Call of Duty 5. It gives all of the necessary steps with pictures needed to accomplish its task in the simplest manner. My expert instructions instead shows the reader how to play a game of Call of Duty 5 on XBOX Live and it gives them information on many of the different options that come along with playing a Live game.

XBOX Proposal Number 2

The process that I am choosing for this project will be to correctly use Call of Duty 5 on XBOX 360 in both a single player game mode and an online XBOX live game. I will show my audiences how to turn on the XBOX and all of the necessary steps to successfully start Call of Duty 5. There are many different steps that need to be followed to correctly set up a game, including connecting and turning on your XBOX, inserting the game, and navigating throughout all the menus for the two different users.

Best Usability Test?

After reading the instructor blog and chapter 12 in the book, I have pretty much narrowed down my choices for the usability test to either use a read and locate test or a summary test. A document markup might not work well for me because not that many people in this class have an XBOX 360, let alone Call of Duty 5 for it. I also don’t think that a survey would be the best test for me to choose, just because that does not really answer any specific questions for me.

Poor Deisgn Content

The design of a document has a major impact on its credibility and on the credibility of the information. For me, a poorly designed document with an awkward layout will never be chosen over one that has a good design and layout combination. For example, when I Google information to help/assist with homework and I find two web sites that answer the question, I will choose the one that has a better design because I know that the writer of it took his time to make it and refine it, and so it is probably more credible than the other.

Write for the Reader

The main thing that I took from these long readings was the fact that the writer of technical instructions needs to keep in mind what their audience’s needs and expectations are when they read their instructions. When you create your instructions you need to ask who, why, what, where, when, and how the reader will be using your instructions.
